In 1997, the U.S. Mint made numismatic history by issuing the first Platinum American Eagle Proof coin . The Platinum American Eagle is unique among American coinage because the design of the proof coin differs from the bullion coin. Authorized by Congress in 1996, the release of the 1997 Platinum American Eagle was the first platinum legal tender coin. The Platinum American Eagles hold a face value of $100.  The Platinum American Eagle Proof coin has become a favorite of American patriots.
