Analizziamo quest'oggi i Damascus X4 V-Force, probabilmente i guanti più resistenti al taglio e alla puntura con aghi di siringa attualmente in commercio, destinati all'uso da parte di personale di polizia e addetti alla sicurezza.

This time we will analize the Damascus X4 V-Forxe gloves, maybe the most cut and syringe niddles puncture resistant gloves on sell at this moment. They're intented for police officers and security operators use.

                     

 Il personale di polizia di tutto il mondo si trova quotidianamente alle prese con l'esigenza di perquisire e gestire soggetti potenzialmente portatori di oggetti taglienti e affilati ma anche di siringhe potenzialmente infette.

Gli X4 fanno parte della serie V-Force, che comprende:

• gli X1 (in materiale traspirante e con un singolo strato di SuperFabric sul palmo per la resistenza ai tagli, attualmente non più prodotti);
• gli X3 (dotato di 2 strati di SuperFabric sul palmo e uno strato di Kevlar sul dorso per la resistenza ai tagli con forze maggiore di 10 libbre e 1,5 libbre per la puntura accidentale con aghi);
• gli X5 (traspiranti e dotati di due strati di SuperFabric sulla punta delle dita e uno strato sul palmo per una resistenza ai tagli di 5,5 libbre e 1,2 libbre per le punture accidentali, ma solo sulle parti protette con SuperFabric).

 The police officers of all the world have to search criminals and handle dangerous sharp and cutting items but also syringes potentially infectious.

For this reason the Damascus have produced the X4 V-Force, studied to resist these attacks.

The X4 belongs to the V-Force serie that includes:

• the X1 (transpirant material with a single layer of SuperFabric on the palms. Now discontinued);

• the X3 (with 2 SuperFabric layers on the palms and a Kevlar layer on the back of the hand that can resist cutting attacks strong more than 10 lbs. and 1,5 lbs. for neddles attacks);

• the X5 (transpirant with two layer of SuperFabric on the fingertips and a layer on the palm to resist cutting attacks strong more than 5,5 lbs. and 1,2 lbs for neddles attacks - only in the points covered by SuperFabric).

Caratteristiche tecniche:

 Gli X4 rappresentano il massimo della protezione contro tagli e punture accidentali con aghi offerta dalla Damascus con la linea V-Force e, probabilmente, il massimo della protezione oggi presente sul mercato.

Questi guanti presentano differenti aree con diverse caratteristiche tecniche che analizzeremo una ad una.

 The X4 are the most resistant gloves against cut and neddles puncture supplied by Damascus and, maybe, the most resistant of all the gloves on sell at this moment.

These gloves have different areas with different features we analyze each one.

 Tutto il palmo della mano è protetto da ben 3 strati di Puncure Plus (P+) SuperFabric  (materiale anti-taglio e anti-puntura), così come le dita, con particolare attenzione alle punte e alle parti laterali.
La struttura degli X4, da quanto si può apprendere sul web, permetterebbe di resistere a forze di taglio/abrasione superiori a 12 libbre e a forze di puntura superiori a 2,5 libbre, il che li porrebbe all'apice dei guanti “cut/puncture resistant”.

Le punte del dito medio e anulare risultano arrotondate da uno strato di materiale SuperFabric, il quale non lascia cuciture scoperte e disponibili alla penetrazione di aghi.

 All the palm of the hand and the fingers are protected by 3 layers of Puncture Plus (P+) SuperFabric (anti-cut and anti-puncture material) with a particular attention on fingertips and lateral sides of the fingers.

The X4 structure, on what we have found on web, resist to cutting attack forces over 12 lbs. and puncture attack forces over 2,5 lbs and this sets the X4 at the top of the puncture/cut resistant gloves class.

The fingertips of the 3° and 4° finger are rounded by a SuperFabric layer that covers the seams and block the neddle penetration.

 La texture del SuperFabric è stata "arricchita" di piccoli e radi inserti in silicone per garantire un buon “grip”, discorso che tratteremo più avanti, nella parte della recensione dedicata al test.

 The texture of the SuperFabric has little silicone inserts for a better grip but we will talk about it next in the test section.

(particolare della texture: i segni neri rappresentano gli inserti in silicone, completamente inefficaci in numero così esiguo)

 Il bordo inferiore dei guanti è finemente rifinito con un bordino in pelle.

 The lower border is well finished with a leather band.

 Il dorso dei guanti è costruito in Kevlar e Spandura per garantire una sufficiente protezione dai tagli.
Il Kevlar ormai è un tessuto conosciuto al grande pubblico quindi non meritevole di ulteriori descrizioni, cosa differente invece è per la Spandura che risulta essere un tessuto dove vengono combinate delle fibre di Cordura attorno ad un nucleo di Lycra.
Questa combinazione di prefigge il risultato di ottenere un tessuto resistente alle abrasione come la Cordura e “strechabile” come la Lycra

Anche sul dorso è presente la protezione della prima falange (abbondante) di tutte le dita con SuperFabric, che la protegge quindi a 360°.

Sul fondo si può vedere il sistema di chiusura con velcro, marchiato con la “D” della Damascus, che si è rivelato efficace su polsi di tutte le misure.

 The back of the gloves is made of Kevlar and Spondura to ensure cut protection.

The Kevlar is a well-known material so it does not need to be introduced while the Spondura is a new material that combine Cordura fibers around a Lycra nucleus.

This mix has the feature of being anti-scratch thank to Cordura and "strechable" thank to Lycra.

Also on the back of the gloves there's the SuperFabric protection that cover the fingertips. In this way the fingertips are protected all around.

In the end of the gloves you can see the closure system with hook-and-loop. It's very useful for all the sizes.

 Il dorso dei guanti presenta una texture differente, molto più simile ad un comune tessuto, grazie alla Spandura.

 The back texture is different from the polm one, similar to a normal cloth thank to Spandura.

 L'unica parte della mano che non risulta protetta è la parte posteriore (dorsale) dell'articolazione del pollice che si presenta in tessuto elasticizzato e traspirante.

La parte anteriore (palmare) e tutta la punta del pollice a 360° risulta comunque protetta dal SuperFabric.

 The only zone of the hand not protected is the back of the joint of the thumbs that is made of elastic and transpirant material.

The anterior zone and all the fingertips of the thumbs are covere by SuperFabric all around.

 L'interno del guanto è ben poco visualizzabile data la rigidità del guanto stesso. Risvoltandoli però possiamo notare la diversità delle tre parti analizzate: la parte anteriore, più scura, molto rigida; la parte posteriore più chiara e molto più morbida ed infine la parte riguardante il pollice, in tessuto elastico.

 It's difficult to see the internal side of the gloves because the gloves is very stiff it's hard to reverse. Reversing it a little, we can see the 3 parts we've seen: the anterior part, darker and stiff; the back side, brighter and softer and the thumb zone made in elastic material.

 I guanti al lavoro.

“Mai provato nulla di simile”.

Questa è la prima frase che viene in mente al primo utilizzo di questi guanti.

La caratteristica (negativa) che padroneggia questi guanti è la rigidità: indossarli le prime volte non risulta per niente semplice e si devono letteralmente spingere le dite sul fondo del guanto.
Non parliamo di comune rigidità da primo utilizzo ma di una rigidità tale da poter creare delle vere e proprie abrasioni, sul palmo e sulle dita, se utilizzati per molto tempo appena estratti dalla confezione.

Abbiamo notato però che, abituando gradualmente i guanti alle mani, indossandoli per brevi periodi e aprendo-chiudendo ripetutamente le mani, questi man mano creano sempre meno problemi riducendo anche le sensazioni fastidiose, pur rimando estremamente rigidi.

 The gloves at work.

"Never used gloves like these".

This is the first thing you will say at the first use.

The main (bad) feature of this gloves is the stiffness: to wear them for the first times is not so easy and you have to push strong your fingers into the gloves.

We are not talking about the common stiffness of first use of new gloves but about a stiffness that can really hurts and scratch your hands if you will wear them for long time at the first uses.

We have abserved that gradually getting used the gloves to the hands, wearing them for short times and opening/closing your fists, the gloves will reduce the scratch action reducing also the bad feelings, still being extremely stiff.

 I guanti sono molto corti sul polso donando stabilità agli stessi una volta indossati e sono anche, volutamente, molto stretti, tanto che una taglia Large risulta molto corta (proprio in senso di lunghezza) per una mano comunemente Medium-Large per altri guanti e Medium secondo la tabella delle misure del sito della Damascus. 

Il punto di forza di questi guanti è quindi la resistenza al taglio e puntura accidentale e in questo crediamo siano veramente al top.

Questi guanti non vengono dichiarati come resistenti ai liquidi biologici (sangue), ma dai test effettuati dalla SuperFabric, il materiale risulta essere resistente ai liquidi e agli oli.

Discorso differente per il dorso, che essendo in tessuto, riteniamo sia facilmente impregnabile sin da subito.

 The gloves are very short on your cuffs, giving stability, and they're very narrow so a Large size is very short for a hand Medium-Large sized with the Damascus sizes table.

So, the strenght of these gloves is the cut/pucture resistant and in this we think they're really at the top.

This gloves are not fluids resistant (like blood) but the test done by SuperFabric tells that material should be liquids and oils resistant.

We have to do a different speech about the back because it's made of "normal" tissues so it will soaks in a little time. 

 Non volendo assolutamente sostituirci ai vari enti americani che hanno testato i  guanti o ai vari test indipendenti, abbiamo comunque provato la resistenza alla puntura, notando che la resistenza è veramente notevole. 

 We didn't want to replace the american institutions tests about these gloves but we tried to test the puncture resistant with an easy test - you can see below - and we can say that they're very resistant.

 Infine abbiamo valutato la possibilità da parte di un operatore di polizia di eseguire perquisizioni efficaci e altre operazioni più fini, riscontrando alcune limitazioni. 

Difatti, lo spesso strato protettivo e la poca sensibilità sulla punta delle dita rende difficile i lavori fini e di precisione quale può essere, per esempio, l'aprire le manette con la chiave.
Buona invece è la capacità di riconoscere oggetti addosso al sospettato, a patto che si utilizzino i polpastrelli e non la punta delle dita, resa veramente molto rigida dalla piega dei vari strati e dalle cuciture.

Altro punto negativo di questi guanti è il grip.
Da quanto riportato dal sito della Damascus, la copertura palmare è stata “impreziosita” da inserti in Silicone che dovrebbero aumentare il grip palmare ma, sia la brillantezza contro luce, sia i graffi capaci di creare sul carrello della SigSauer P226R (KJW) utilizzata per i test, sia la sensazione al tatti, ci portano a pensare che sul modello testato il SuperFabric sia stato utilizzato privo degli inserti dichiarati.

Inoltre, a causa dell'assenza degli inserti in silicone e alla poca sensibilità sulle dita, abbiamo riscontrato non poche difficoltà nel camerate il primo colpo arretrando il carrello della P226, nonostante sia presente un largo tratto ad alto grip e anche l'uso “razionale” del grilletto risulta fortemente compromesso.

 In the end we've tried to test the use of these gloves by a police officer and we've tried to do the common action he can do every days and we've found some troubles. 

The thick protective layer and the little fingertips feelings reduce the ability of doing fine works as opening handcuffs with keys.

Instead is good the ability of search suspects but you have to use your flashy part of your fingertips and not only fingertips because it's very stiff due the thick seams.

Another bad feature of these gloves is the grip.

Damascus says on its website that the palms cover has silicone inserts that should increase grip but both the bright under the light than the scratch on the SigSauer P226 (KJW) used for these tests than the feel make us thinking that the SuperFabric used for this pair of gloves is has not silicone inserts as declared.

Instead, due the absense of the silicone inserts and the little feel on the fingers, we have had many trouble on loading the first cartridge pulling back the slide even if there are a big gripping zone on it. Also the rational use of the trigger is severily compromised.

 A parziale rimedio, le versioni più recenti degli X4 in SuperFabric sono state impreziosite da una reale copertura di fini inserti in silicone nero che, oltre a scurire i guanti, rende più agevole il maneggiare oggetti metallici bruniti (questa volta senza che essi siano brutalmente graffiati) e garantisce un grip decisamente maggiore. 

Con questo modello però, abbiamo riscontrato la quasi impossibilità all'utilizzo della pistola: una volta esploso il primo colpo, la grossa dimensione dell'indice del guanto, unito alla rigidità, impediscono (almeno per quando riguarda la replica) il ritorno del grilletto in posizione utile per il secondo colpo.

 As partial remedy, the newest X4 version has a real black silicone inserts coverage that get dark the gloves, gives a better grip and does not scratch black metal items.

With this new version we have had a very big problem for a police officer: we cannot use the gun. 

When you have shot the first cartridge, due the big dimensions of the gloves fingers, the trigger can't return in its natural position so you can't shot the second round.

 CONCLUSIONI:

In definitiva, gli X4 risultano una buona soluzione per la protezione degli operatori della sicurezza che ogni giorno, per lavoro, sono obbligati ad operare in situazioni a rischio, con la possibilità di tagliarsi e/o pungersi con oggetti potenzialmente infetti, ma anche per altre categorie, quali ad esempio i soccorritori su ambulanze, che vogliano una buona protezione da tagli e punture accidentali durante alcune delicate fasi del soccorso.

Alcune forti limitazioni invece sono mostrate nell'uso “tattico” dei guanti, con impedimenti all'uso dell'arma e necessità di un “adattamento” del guanto alla mano prima di un utilizzo continuo e prolungato.

Durante la nostra ricerca non siamo riusciti a trovare questi guanti in commercio sul territorio nazionale.
Il costo per i soli guanti si aggira intorno ai 50$.

News: da agosto 2009 la Damascus ha immesso sul mercato la nuova serie V-Force, per la quale è stato abbandonato l'utilizzo del (P+) SuperFabric a favore del Kore-Flex Micro-Armor, materiale che sarebbe in grado di fornire la stessa protezione ma con caratteristiche visivamente più simili alla pelle, in grado quindi di rendere i guanti più morbidi e confortevoli (vero ed unico punto negativo di questi guanti).

 CONCLUSIONI:

In the end, the X4 V-Force are a good solution for the protection of security operators every days working in high risk situations where they can prick or cut themself with potentially infective objects. 
The X4 could be useful alsofor other kinds of workers, like paramedics, who need a good protection against accidental cut and/or puncture during rescue operations. 

The X4 gloves have big limitations about the "tactical use", because they can hinder the weapon use. 

They also need a long time of "adaptation" before you can use on-going for long periods because they're very stiff. 

During our research we can't find them on sell in Italy.

The price of this gloves is about $50.

News: since August 2009 Damascus produces the new V-Force series where they have left the (P+) SuperFabric for the Kore-Flex Micro-Armor. This new material should be able to give the same protection level of the SuperFabric being more soft and comfortable (the only real bad feature of the old X4 version).
