L'uniforme da lancio americana nacque dopo i primi lanci di prova eseguiti nei campi di addestramento negli Stati Uniti.

The American paratrooper uniform was born after the firsts jump tests made in the boot camps in the USA.

 Durante i primi test svilupparono l'uniforme da lancio M1941, usata poi nel pacifico per terminarne le scorte. In Europa fu usata principalmente la M42 fino all'introduzione del modello M43 alla fine del 1944.

First they tried with the M41 Jump Suit, that was used in the Pacific theatre, in Europe was mainly used the M42 jump suit until the introduction of the M43 model at the end of 1944.

 L'uniforme M42 è stata usata dai primi lanci in Africa, in Italia, in Normandia e in Provenza.

 The M42 was used from the firsts airborne operations in Africa, Italy and in Normandy and Provence operations.

 Durante l'operazione Market Garden in Olanda (Settembre 1944) fu distribuita ai reparti la nuova M43, comune per fanteria e paracadutisti.

 During Market Garden the M42 was mainly changed for the M43 model, used also by the infantry.

 L'uniforme M42 era molto comoda e moderna per l'epoca. Era realizzata in cotone colore OD3, leggera e non adatta a climi freddi si dimostrò non molto robusta se sottoposta a pesanti condizioni di combattimento.

The M42 uniform was really comfortable and modern. It was made of OD3 cotton, not designed for cold weather and not so durable in heavy combat situation.

 Dopo lo sbarco in Normandia i paracadutisti americani tornarono in Inghilterra con le loro uniformi molto logore dopo circa due mesi di combattimenti.

After the Normandy operation US paratroopers went back to England with their uniforms in really bad condition after less than two months of active duty.

 L'uniforme aveva un totale di sei grandi tasche capaci di contenere un alto numero di munizioni e altro vitale equipaggiamento, dopo i primi lanci in combattimento i soldati si resero conto che le tasche molto appesantite tendevano a strapparsi durante il lancio. Vennero così rinforzate dai "riggers", personale addetto alle riparazioni dei paracadute e dell'equipaggiamento in generale, con stoffa color OD7 recuperata dai sacchi da trasporto dando vita alla classica M42 rinforzata vista in Normandia sia vestita dalla 101st che dalla 82nd Airborne Division, o con rinforzi di cuioio come fece la 82nd in Sicilia.

It had a total of six big pockets able to contain a lot of ammos and other vital equipment, after the firsts operations paratroopers find out that the pockets could get ripped during the jump so the riggers started to reinforce them with heavy OD7 cloth from the overseas bags, the classic reinforced M42 used in Normandy by the 101st and 82nd ABD or with leather like the 82nd in Sicily.

 Vediamo in dettaglio la giacca che componeva l'uniforme M42. Ha quattro tasche chiusa con bottoni automatici a pressione, una cintura alla vita era usata per stringere il capo al corpo ed era chiusa da una lunga cerniera.

Let's see in detail the M42 jacket, it has four pockets closed with black press studs, a waist belt is used to tighten the jacket and a long zip close the garment on the front.

 Vicino al collo sono presenti due piccole cerniere parallele dove ogni parà riponeva il coltellino d'emergenza, fondamentale per tagliare le corde del paracadute in caso di atterraggio su alberi o tetti.

Near the neck there are two short and parallel zips where every paratrooper used to keep the emergency knife used to cut the parachute's ropes in case of a bad landing.

 I pantaloni, realizzati con la stessa stoffa della giacca hanno due grandissime tasche cargo ai lati e sono molto stretti attorno alla caviglia per poter essere inseriti all'interno degli stivaletti da lancio.

 The trousers are made of the same jacket's fabric and they have two huge cargo pockets and they are quite tight on the ankles so they can be put inside the Jump Boots.

 Intorno alla vita sono presenti quattro tasche.

There are other four pockets all around the trouser's waist.

 I pantaloni sono chiusi con dei bottoni e sono presenti intorno alla vita gli attacchi per le bretelle e sei passanti per la cintura.

The trousers are closed with buttons and all around there are attachments for the suspenders and outside there are six belt loops.

 La tasca cargo rinforzata con la stoffa proveniente dai borsoni di tela verde OD7.

The reinforced version has green OD7 fabric reinforcements around the cargo pockets and on the knees.

 Gli stivaletti da lancio sono il marchio di fabbrica dei paracadutisti americani. Erano un gran bel pezzo di equipaggiamento ed era invidiato da tutti gli altri reparti di fanteria che normalmente indossavano stivaletti bassi e ghette.

The Jump Boots are the paratrooper's "trademark". They were a great piece of equipment and all the other infantry, including gliders, were envying them, forced to wear low ankle boots and gaiters.

 Ancora oggi la Corcoran produce il modello Legendary di colore marrone, identico alla versione del 1944. Sul mercato sono presenti anche altre buone repliche un po' più economiche.

Today Corcoran produce the brown Legendary model, the same as the World War 2 model, but also other cheaper replicas are good.

 Questi stivaletti erano abbastanza alti ed avevano rinforzi lungo la caviglia, realizzati in cuoio marrone verniciato erano usati, una volta lucidati perfettamente, durante le libere uscite.

These boots where quite high and reinforced on the ankle, made of brown painted leather they were used, after a good polished, on the walking out uniform. 

 L'elmetto usato dai parà era fondamentalmente lo stesso della fantieria, ma all'interno erano presenti agganci supplementari per assicurare in modo affidabile l'elmo alla testa. Infatti all'interno vennero aggiunti due agganci a forma di A per attaccare il sotto mento di cuoio. Al guscio esterno di acciaio venivano saldati dei ganci a forma di D ma tendevano ad essere troppo deboli e dissaldarsi con l'uso. I ganci a D contraddistinguono il modello M2.
Verso la fine del 1944 gli elmi M2 vennero sostituiti dal modello M1C.

The helmet used by paratroopers was quite the same like the one used by the infantry but inside it had two A-shaped attachments for the chin cup and on the steel pots the first paratrooper model has the D shaped and welded chin strap attachments (M2 model) from the end of 1944 the D-Bale helmets were quite uncommon because of the welded attachements weakness and changed for the M1C model.

 Elmetto M1 da fanteria. E' possibile vedere le differenze riguardanti la struttura degli attacchi del sottogola.

M1, infantry model, we can see the differences mainly in the chinstrap structure and attachment.

 La famosa giunzione frontale, di solito usata per riconoscere un elmetto bellico da uno postbellico. Dopo la guerra la produzione cambiò e la giunzione passò nel retro dell'elmetto.

The famous front seam, usually used to identify a WW2 helmet. After the war production changed and the seam went on the rear part of the helmet.

 Se usato per giocare a softair consiglio di usare un elmetto Vietnam.

If used for airsoft my advice is to convert a Vietnam era helmet.

 L'equipaggiamento usato era lo stesso della fanteria eccezion fatta per la Musette Bag M1936 al posto dello zaino M1928, scomodo e inaffidabile durante i lanci.

Equipment used was the same as the one used by the infantry except for the musette bag M1936 instead of the backpack M1928 quite uncomfortable and unreliable during jumps.

 Per quanto riguarda un fuciliere armato di Garand o Springfield erano soliti usare il cinturone M1923, bretelle M1936, bandoliere per le munizioni e anche altri tipi di tasche e borse.

Talking about Springfield/Garand riflemen they were used to wear the M1923 Cartridge belt, M1936 suspenders, ammo bandoleer and all sort of pouches and other bags.

 Normalmente al cinturone erano applicati un First Aid pouch, un porta pala (M1910 per la pala con manico a T, o M1943 per la pala pieghevole) e il porta borraccia modello M1910.

Usually they had attached to the belt a First Aid pouch, shovel cover (M1910, T-handle model or M1943 shovel), M1910 canteen  cover.

 Equipaggiamento addizionale poteva includere la baionetta, un'arma da fianco, normalmente una Colt .45 e altre borse come musette bags o borse per il trasporto di munizioni: General Purpose Bags o Submachine Guns Ammo Bags.

Additional equipment could include the bayonet, the handgun, usually a Colt .45, and some bags like other musettes or general purpose or Submachine Guns Ammo Bags.

 Ufficiali e soldati armati di Thompson normalmente erano equipaggiati con il cinturone semplice M1936 e disponevano di tasche portacaricatori e borse a tracolla.

Officers and Thompson gunners usually wore the M1936 pistol belt with ammo pouches and ammo bags.

 I mitraglieri armati di BAR invece avevano un cinturone dedicato, il BAR ammo belt, progettato per contenere i caricatori del BAR. Spesso oltre a questo molti soldati portavano anche un cinturone M1923 con le lastrine per il Garand per avere più potenza di fuoco in caso di inceppamenti.

BAR gunners used to wear the BAR ammo belt, often they wore also a standard M1923 ammo belt to have more firepower even with the Garand rifle.

 Per completare l'uniforme ci sarebbero davvero tantissimi accessori ma pensando ad una uniforme corretta storicamente per giocare a softair o al primo evento di rievocazione l'accessorio principale è la borraccia e il bicchiere di metallo, per bere in stile!

 To complete the uniform there are a lot of accessories, thinking about a good historical uniform to play airsoft or at the first reenacting event the main accessories needed are the canteen and the metal cup. So you can drink in style!
