Nel quadro delle recensioni che ASC offre ai suoi lettori, presentiamo i sistemi di comunicazione della Z-Tactical, gentilmente inviatici dal produttore per i test.
Partendo quindi da questa replica dell'headset Sordin, avremo modo di scorrere praticamente tutto il catalogo attuale di questo brand.
Pare opportuno informare il lettore che, come perito in telecomunicazioni e radioamatore, sono piuttosto prevenuto nei confronti delle repliche in ambito radio ed accessori. Se dal lato tecnico sarò piuttosto puntiglioso nell'evidenziare e valutare le caratteristiche del prodotto, si tenga comunque ben presente che, in quanto prodotto replica destinato ad un uso non professionale, molte delle criticità che saranno evidenziate sono assolutamente tollerabili in relazione alla finalità del prodotto ed alla differenza di costo con i prodotti professionali.

As part of the reviews that ASC offers its readers, we're now presenting COMMS from Z-Tactical, kindly sent to us by the manufacturer for testing.
Starting then from this Sordin replica headset , we will run virtually all the current catalog of this brand.
It seems appropriate to inform the reader that, as an expert in telecommunications and HAM, I'm quite prejudiced against replicas of radioes and accessories.
If by technical side I'll be pretty meticulous in highlighting and evaluating the characteristics of the product, readers still keep in mind that, as a replica-product intended for non-professional use, many of the critical issues that are highlighted are absolutely tolerable regarding the purpose of the product and the cost difference with professional ones.

La controparte reale

L'headset Z-Tactical Sordin replica la cuffia del MRCS (MICH Ranger Communication System) prodotto da MSA-Sordin.
Il sistema nasce con la finalità di integrare una cuffia protettiva con attenuazione rumori con il sistema di comunicazione radio, il tutto con caratteristiche tali da poter essere agevolmente indossato sotto l'elmetto balistico modello MICH/ACH.

Il fine del prodotto originale è pertanto quello di fornire un'adeguata protezione acustica pur non perdendo la possibilità di interagire con i sistemi di comunicazione,  bensì cercando di agevolarla, integrando "tutto in uno" per evitare sovrapposizioni scomode e meno efficaci.
Si noti, ad esempio, che la cuffia del sistema PRR - Bowman, pur conformata per incastrarsi sotto il padiglione di una cuffia protettiva, ne rende difficile l'uso con l'elmetto; mentre soluzioni più "fai da te" ottenute indossando le cuffie protettive sopra i classici auricolari con microfono a braccetto, limitano di molto l'efficacia della protezione acustica a causa della non perfetta aderenza dei pad.

The real one

Z-Tactical Sordin Headset replicates the MRCS (MICH Ranger Communication System) manufactured by MSA-Sordin.
The system's aim is to incorporate noise attenuation with the radio communication system, all with characteristics that can easily be worn under MICH ballistic helmet  and similar models. The end of the original product is then to provide adequate hearing protection while not losing the ability to interact with the communication systems by integrating "all in one",  avoiding uncomfortable and less effective DIY solutions.
Note, for example, that the PRR- Bowman headset is shaped to fit under protective hearcups, but in this way it is difficult to wear it under helmets, while DIY solutions obtained wearing protections over the traditional headsets greatly limitis the effectiveness of hearing protection due to the imperfect adhesion of pads.

Il Prodotto

Z-Tactical ha riprodotto il sistema Sordin con dovizia di particolari e, a prima vista, solo un occhio esperto può distinguerne le differenze.
Scorriamo le parti principali per analizzarne la realizzazione.

The product

Z-Tactical reproduced Sordin Headset in great detail and, at first sight, only a trained eye can distinguish the differences.

Le capsule

Le capsule auricolari riproducono fedelmente le controparti originali; le plastiche risultano solide e di buona fattura, l'aspetto è leggermente satinato ed il colore si avvicina molto all'originale, forse appena più scuro.
La capsula di destra contiene il vano per le batterie, 2 stilo taglia AAA, con chiusura a vite ed o-ring di tenuta per l'umidità. La finitura del tappo metallico di chiusura risulta palesemente di qualità e fattura inferiore alla controparte MSA.
La capsula di sinistra è caratterizzata dai tre pulsanti di azionamento del sistema di riduzione rumore, dall'innesto del cavo per la connessione al PTT e del braccetto del microfono.

Sulla parte anteriore di entrambe le capsule sono presenti i microfoni di trasduzione dei suoni ambientali.
I pad imbottiti sono forse un po' troppo morbidi, ma va rilevato che anche per il modello MSA molti utilizzatori preferiscono sostituire le pad originali con la variante in gel, per maggiore comodità ed isolamento.

Hearcups

Earcups faithfully reproduce the original counterparts, and plastics are solid and well made, have slightly glazed look and the color is very close to the original, maybe just darker.
Right cup contains the battery compartment, for 2 AAA size, with metal screw-on cap and O-ring seal for moisture.
Metal cap's finish of the  closure is clearly of lower quality and workmanship to the MSA counterpart.
Left cup is characterized by three buttons for actuating the noise reduction system, by the cable connection and by the microphone arm.

On the front side of both cup we find microphones used for transduction of environmental sounds.
The pads are maybe a bit too soft, but it is noteworthy that also for the MSA model many users prefer to replace the original pads with gel ones for added comfort and insulation.

Anche l'archetto riproduce fedelmente la controparte originale.
Si fissa alle capsule mediante due U metalliche e la regolazione della taglia avviene mediante lo scorrimento di due slitte plastiche sull'archetto centrale.
La massima escursione è di 3cm per lato, a formare un arco che va dai 25cm ai 31cm.
Lo scorrimento è agevole ed esente da giochi e rimane stabile una volta regolato.
Sull'archetto corre il cavo elettrico che connette le due capsule.

Tutta la parte fissa dell'archetto è ricoperta un panno di tessuto in camo simil-woodland rimuovibile mediante velcro, sul lato interno del panno sono posizionati ulteriori passanti in velcro per "guidare" il cavo che collega le due capsule auricolari. Il tessuto tende però a scolorire dopo breve utilizzo.
La parte interna del panno, a contatto con la testa dell'utilizzatore, è ricoperta da un panno "vellutato".

Headband

Even the headband faithfully reproduces the original counterpart.
It is fixed to the capsules by two U-shaped metal bows and the size adjustment is achieved by two plastics slides connected on the central brace.
The maximum excursion is of 3 cm per side, to form a headband ranging from 25 cm to 31 cm.
Scrolling is smooth and remains stable once adjusted.
On the headband runs the electric cable connecting the two capsules.

Headband is covered with woodland-camo cloth, fixed by velcro and removable; on the inside of the cloth are placed additional velcro for lead cable that connects the two ear capsules. The fabric, however, tends to discolor after short use.
The inner part of the cloth, in contact with the user's head, is covered with a softer fabric.

Il microfono

Il braccetto del microfono, partendo dal retro della cuffia ed ancorandosi in un tassello metallico, come nella controparte reale, piega sul lato inferiore per passare verso il volto dell'utilizzatore.
Risulta più corto e rigido della controparte originale e la capsula plastica che contiene e protegge il microfono è fissata con tre piccole viti; la finitura di questa parte è, anche visivamente, molto differente dall'MSA.

Mic

The boom microphone, starting from the back of the headset and anchored into a piece of metal, as in original counterpart, bend at the bottom to switch to the user's face.
It is shorter and harder than the original counterpart. The plastic capsule that contains and protects the microphone is secured by three small screws, finishing of this part is also visually very different from MSA one.

Il cavo

Il cavo di connessione al PTT è abbastanza solido al tatto, forse eccessivamente rigido.
Manca, rispetto alla controparte reale, il cavo interno di trazione che evita di dissipare sul rame dei cavi eventuali strappi accidentali.
Manca anche il rinforzo in gomma posto, nell'originale, all'innesto nella cuffia utile a limitare pieghe “a gomito” del cavo in corrispondenza della capsula.

Il cavo è terminato con connettore di forma e dimensioni compatibili con lo standard TP-120 / U-174/U, ma cablato differentemente e, pertanto, la cuffia non è utilizzabile (di fabbrica) con PTT originali.

The cable

The cable for PTT connection is pretty solid to the touch, perhaps too hard.
Missing, compared to the real counterpart, the inner tension wire that prevents the copper cables to dissipate any accidental tears.
It also lacks the rubber reinforcement tube, used in the original, useful to limit elbow folds of the cable in correspondence of the cup inserction.

The cable is terminated with TP-120 / U-174/U compatible plug, but wired differently and, therefore, the headset is not usable (by factory default) with military PTTs .

L'elettronica

Per accedere all'elettronica per eventuali riparazioni è sufficiente esercitare una leggera trazione sui padiglioni imbottiti, che sono inseriti a pressione nelle rispettive capsule.
Come evidente dall'immagine sono previsti (come nella versione MSA) due altoparlanti, uno per i suoni ambientali ed uno per le trasmissioni radio; in questo modo il funzionamento dell'apparato radio è garantito anche qualora si dovessero scaricare le batterie del sistema di amplificazione ambientale.

Il circuito è realizzato in SMD il che, a fronte di una buona razionalizzazione degli spazi, rende più complesse eventuali operazioni di riparazione.
Mentre il circuito della scheda appare ben realizzato, devo evidenziare che le saldature di connessione dei cavi sono tra le peggiori che io abbia mai visto.
Per rendere compatibile questo headset con i PTT militari risulta sufficiente scambiare il cavo giallo (pin J13) con il cavo rosso (saldato direttamente sull'estremità interna alla capsula del braccetto microfono), due saldature ed il gioco è fatto.

Electronics

To access the electronics for repair is sufficient to gently pull on the pads, which are press-fitted in the respective hearcups.
As evident from the image, two speakers are provided (as in the MSA version), one for environmental sounds and one for radio audio; in this way the functioning of the radio is guaranteed even in case of battery discharge.

The circuit is realized in SMD, compared to a good rationalization of space, makes it more complex operations, if any repair is needed.
While the circuit board looks nice, I must emphasize that the welds connecting the cables are among the worst I've ever seen.
To make this headset compatible with PTT military is sufficient to exchange the yellow wire (J13 pin) with the red wire (welded on the inner end of the boom microphone arm), two solder and you're done.
NB Any action on the electronic voids, as is obvious, the guarantee offered by the manufacturer, whose terms can be viewed on the website (http://new-ztactical.com/repair.asp).

Il peso riscontrato è di 410g (batterie incluse).

Il sito del produttore non riporta il prezzo, ma sulla rete il costo si attesta intorno ai 50,00 €.

L'headset viene consegnato nella confezione di cartone presentata nell'immagine di apertura, con supporto in materiale espanso ed un piccolo set di stickers.
Nella confezione non è presente alcun manuale, che va scaricato direttamente dall'apposito link, sul sito del produttore.
Non è presente neppure alcuna certificazione relativa alle proprietà protettive delle cuffie.

The weight is 410g (battery included).
The manufacturer's website does not mention the price, you can find it online at about 50,00 €.
The headset is delivered in a cardboard box (see opening pic), with foam support and a small set of stickers.
In the package there is no manual, it should be downloaded directly from the manufacturer website.

Il funzionamento

Una volta indossata la cuffia il mondo sembra ovattato, certo questo non da alcuna garanzia sulla protezione offerta, ma tenendo ben presente l'uso per cui il prodotto è destinato ciò non dovrebbe costituire un problema.

L'inserimento delle batterie è tutt'altro che agevole e manca una chiara indicazione del verso di inserimento delle batterie.
Una volta svitato il tappo occorre inserire la prima batteria dal polo negativo (-) ed innestarla nella sua sede abbassandola con l'ausilio di un piccolo utensile, fatto ciò si inserisce la seconda dal polo positivo (+) e si ri-avvita il tappo.
Anche la rimozione risulta essere abbastanza scomoda: mentre la prima batteria (la seconda in ordine di inserimento) si sfila agevolmente, occorre battere insistentemente sul fondo della capsula per far fuoriuscire la seconda dalla sua sede.

L'accensione dell'elettronica avviene mediante il pulsante centrale sulla capsula sinistra, mentre la regolazione del volume, di cui sono disponibili tre livelli, avviene mediante i pulsanti destro e sinistro, rispettivamente per alzare ed abbassare. Sui pulsanti è chiaramente indicata la relativa funzione (ma chissà come mai sul manuale sono indicati al contrario). L'azione sui pulsanti viene segnalata da un bip in cuffia.

Al volume massimo l'audio da la sensazione di avere acquisito dei superpoteri e l'amplificazione ambientale è particolarmente marcata; manca però (o è assolutamente inefficiente) un filtro di eliminazione del fruscio di fondo, aspetto sul quale tornerò nella “prova sul campo”.

Per quanto concerne la funzione di attenuazione dei rumori, il manuale dichiara che il circuito “sopprime immediatamente i rumori superiori agli 82 dB”, l'uso del termine “sopprime” è assolutamente azzeccato: a differenza della controparte originale, la cui elettronica attenua i rumori portandoli sotto la soglia, in questo caso il circuito blocca il segnale dei microfoni esterni anziché attenuarlo, restituendo la sensazione che la cuffia si spenga in presenza dei rumori forti.

L'audio proveniente dalla radio è chiaro e riprodotto in entrambe le cuffie, ovviamente (visto che dalla radio arriva un segnale mono) in monobiauricolare e non in stereo; il produttore dichiara un attenuazione di 18dB del rumore per rendere più chiare le comunicazioni.

Il plug è configurato, come già accennato, in modo non conforme allo standard e questo rende compatibile questa cuffia solo con i PTT del medesimo produttore.

How it works

Once put on the headphones, the world seems muffled, of course this does not give any warrant about protection offered, but keeping in mind the purpose for which it is intended this should not be a problem.

Inserting the batteries is far from easy and there is no clear indication of the direction of batteries insertion.
Once unscrewed the cap is necessary to insert the first battery from the negative pole (-) and push it in its seat by lowering it with the aid of a small tool, ones that is done the second battery is inserted from the positive pole (+) and than you can re-screw the cap .
The removal appears, also, to be rather difficult: while the first battery (the second in order of placement) slips off easily, you need to beat insistently on the bottom of the cuo to release the second of its seat.

Electronics is powered by the middle button on the left hearcup, while the volume, which has three levels, is performed through the left and right buttons, respectively to raise and lower. The buttons are clearly marked as to their function (but who knows why the manual indicates to the contrary). The action on the buttons is signaled by a beep in the headphones.

At maximum volume the sound returns the feeling of having gained superpowers and environmental amplification is particularly marked, but lacks (or is totally inefficient) a filter for elimination background noise, something which I return to on the "field test" .

About the noise reduction function, the manual states that the circuit "immediately suppresses noise in excess of 82 dB", the use of the word "suppress" is absolutely guessed: unlike the original counterpart, which reduces the exciding sounds bringing them under the noise threshold, in this case the circuit blocks the signal from external microphones instead of mitigating it, by returning the feeling that the audio goes off in the presence of loud noises.

The audio from the radio is clear and reproduced in both headphones, of course it's a bi-auricolar mono and not a stereo (since the radio gives a mono signal), the manufacturer declares a noise attenuation of 18 dB to make clear communications.

La prova sul campo

Dopo alcuni test sul campo la mia soggettiva impressione è che:

• l'headset "vesta bene" pur essendo di dimensioni maggiori agli headset che utilizzo solitamente, non risulta ingombrante o scomodo;
  per stare agevolmente sotto l'elmetto occorre però rimuovere il crown pad e ri-disporre gli altri, con il risultato (evidente nella fig.11) che se di tolgono le cuffie l'elmetto va da tutte le parti;

• la solidità della replica e dei cavi è adeguata all'uso;

• non ho riscontrato problemi elettrici nemmeno in giornate con pioggia insistente, ma le cuffie non vanno certo immerse in acqua;

• il braccetto del microfono ed il cavo radio sono troppo rigidi;

• la diffusione in cuffia dei suoni ambientali è efficace e stereoscopica, dando una buona percezione della posizioni delle varie sorgenti acustiche;

• l'assenza di un filtro per rumori di fondo da la fastidiosa percezione di "statica" (mai provato ad alzare al massimo il volume di uno stereo che non sta riproducendo musica?), anche al volume minimo ho dovuto togliere le cuffie dopo nemmeno un'ora, ma può darsi sia ipersensibile io...

Fatto sta che in ciascuna prova, dopo non più di venti minuti, ho dovuto sfilare le cuffie ed indossarle al collo.

Field testing

After field tests my subjective impression is that:

• the headset "dress well" despite being larger than the headset that I often use, is not cumbersome or uncomfortable;
• fits easily under a helmetm, but I must remove the crown pad and re-arrange the other ones, with the result (as evident in figure 11) that if you remove the headset the helmet will not fit;
• the strength of headset and cable is adequate for its use;
• I have not encountered electrical problems even on days with persistent rain, but the headphones are certainly not designed to be immersed in water;
• boom microphone and radio cable are too rigid;
• reproduction of environmental sounds in the headset is effective and stereoscopic, giving a good sense of the positions of the various noise sources;
• the absence of a noise filter returns the perception of "static" noise (ever try to turn up the volume of a stereo that is not playing music?), even at lower volume setting I had to remove the headphones after less than an hour, but maybe I'm hypersensitive (doubt! ;-) )...

The fact is that in each trial, after no more than twenty minutes, I had to take off the headphones and wear them around neck.

Considerazioni finali

Per concludere, le Z-Tactical Sordin replica hanno una discreta qualità, in linea con il valore, soprattutto tenendo conto dei limiti propri di una replica.

Trovo però riprovevole la scelta di obbligare l'acquirente a due semplici saldature qualora volesse utilizzare PTT originali. A mio avviso la speranza di legare il prodotto ad accessori proprietari con una piccolezza del genere è peraltro controproducente: visto l'elevato costo dei PTT originali è probabile che il giocatore medio non se ne conceda molti, obbligarlo a modificare la cuffia per poterli utilizzare non fa altro che renderlo disinteressato a tutti gli altri PTT replica, magari comunque potenzialmente interessanti al fine di ricreare differenti set-up. D'altra parte l'ampia scelta di PTT realizzati da Z-Tactical, in questo modo, non risultano interessanti per chi avesse una cuffia originale.

Personalmente, in assenza di reali necessità di protezione acustica, trovo questo headset (come pure la controparte originale) adatto solo a fare fotografie e replicare setup. Come ben sappiamo però, anche l'aspetto estetico è per molti giocatori di sicuro conto e, su questo aspetto, non c'è che dire: le Z-Tactical Sordin Replica fanno la loro sporca figura.

Final thoughts

Finally, Z-Tactical Sordin Replica have a quality, in line with the value, especially taking into account the limitations inherent a replica.
However I find reprehensible the choice of forcing the buyer to make two easy welds if he wishes to use military PTTs.
I think that Z-Tactical hope to link his product with its own accessories with a little thing like that is more counterproductive than usefull.
Personally, in the absence of a real need for hearing protection, I find this headset (as well as the original counterpart) only suitable for taking pictures and replicating setups. But, as we know, even the appearance is certainly important for many players and, on this aspect, no doubt about it:
the Z-Tactical Sordin Replica do its job.
