Graziano di Sas Modellismo di Nerviano (MI) non fornisce solo materiale per il Soft Air, bensì anche materiale al top di gamma destinato ai professionisti del settore militare.
Airsoftcommunity, quindi, ha avuto la possibilità di avere, per un test in ambiente operativo reale, un paio di scarponi tra i migliori sul mercato destinato ai reparti che operano in ambiente montano: i BATES "TORA BORA ALPINE".
Le scarpe sono state affidate per la prova e la valutazione a un membro di uno dei migliori reparti del nostro Esercito, che opera in montagna.

Graziano, owner of the italian store SAS MODELLISMO not only sells airsoft products but professional military and law enforcement products.
Therefore, Airsoftcommunity, had the opportunity to have for trials in real operating training a pair of Bates “Tora Bora Alpine” shoes.
We gave them to a member of one of the Italian best know Mountain troop who tested Bates shoes in hard conditions.

 DESCRIZIONE

Gli scarponi hanno un aspetto “massiccio” e conferiscono senza ancora calzarli una sensazione di sicurezza e robustezza. 
La prima parte del test ha avuto inizio nel periodo compreso tra i mesi di febbraio e marzo 2010, su sentieri di montagna percorrendo distanze minime di 5 chilometri, via via aumentando fino a circa 18 chilometri in modo tale da ammorbidire gli scarponi e adattarli al piede in maniera graduale con particolare attenzione a comfort alle basse temperature, alla deformazione del plantare nell’impiego prolungato, alla calzata, alla tenuta laterale del piede e, infine, alla resistenza all'acqua.

 DESCRIPTION

The boots have a "solid" look.
The test began in the period between February and March 2010, on hiking trails along the minimum distance of 5 km, gradually increasing to about 18 km. In this way, we “softened” the boots before using them for hard mountain trials.

 Il TEST

Il terreno di prova consisteva di sentiero e fondo ricoperto da ghiaccio e neve, con spessore della neve non eccessivo.

La sensazione che si prova al momento della prima calzata e’ quella di una scarpa molto calda e robusta, anche se si è riscontrata qualche difficoltà nella chiusura corretta dei lacci a causa della rigidita’ iniziale della scarpa.

Valida e precisa la linguetta regolabile; le dimensioni "abbondanti" della linguetta favoriscono il comfort sul collo del piede e sulla caviglia. 

Ottima, su questo tipo di terreno, la suola Vibram; il drenaggio di fango e neve e’ sempre ottimale e anche il colore nero e’ particolarmente adatto ad un impiego militare. 
In salita, la scarpa risulta comoda e precisa nonostante la rigidità. Il tallone e’ fermo e ben chiuso e la conformazione dell’allacciatura fascia il piede senza creare fastidiosi punti di pressione. 
La scarpa e’ molto confortevole anche su terreno particolarmente accidentato e l’assorbimento degli urti e’ ottimale. 

Dopo l’utilizzo in ambiente bagnato, la scarpa impiega circa 24 ore, alla temperatura di 20 gradi centigradi, ad asciugare completamente.

 THE TEST 

The test field consisted in trails and fields covered with ice and snow.

The feeling you get when you first fit Bates “Alpine” boots is of a very warm and sturdy shoes, even if we have found some difficulty in closing them properly due to the rigidity of the upper.
 

The “abundant” size of the flap promote the comfort of the ankle.

Very good the Vibram sole, and the drainage of mud and snow is always excellent. The black color of the sole is god for military use.
Uphill, the shoe is comfortable and precise despite the stiffness. The heel is firmly and tightly closed. Lacing wraps the foot without creating uncomfortable pressure points.
The shoe is very comfortable even on rough terrains and the absorption of bumps is optimal.

After using them in wet environments, the shoes takes about 24 hours at 20 degrees centigrade to dry completely.

I segni lasciati dai lacci dopo i primi utilizzi. Come scritto più sopra, l’allacciatura era resa difficoltosa dalla durezza della scarpa nuova.

Dopo un anno di impiego, i segni di usura della suola sono praticamente nulli.
 After a year of use, signs of wear on the sole are virtually insignificant.

In rosso, evidenziato il supporto laterale e la protezione per il malleolo. Insieme, garantiscono un’ottima stabilità del piede.
 In red, we highlighted the side support and protection for the ankle. Together, they provide excellent stability of the foot.

 MARCIA SU TERRENO INNEVATO.

La prova su terreno innevato si è concentrata sull’analisi della capacità termica dello scarpone. La temperatura notturna era di circa - 20 gradi centigradi. Lo scarpone si è dimostrato caldo anche in momenti di pausa della marcia.

Ottima anche la tenuta all’umidità nella prima parte del test. Le cuciture tra suola e tomaia si sono dimostrate resistenti, anche nelle escursioni termiche.

Lo scarpone è stato testato anche in marcia su ghiacciaio, munito di ramponi e in arrampicata.

 WALKING ON SNOWY TERRAIN.

The test focused on snowy terrain analysis of the heat capacity of the boot. The night temperature was around - 20 Celsius degrees. The boot confirmed to be warm even in moments of pause in the march.

Excellent moisture sealing even in the first part of the test. The seams between the sole and upper have proved resilient, even in temperature variations.

The boot was also tested walking on glaciers, equipped with crampons and climbing.

 UTILIZZO SU GHIACCIAIO CON RAMPONI E ARRAMPICATA CON RAMPONI

I ghiacciai della Val Senales (Alto Adige), luogo dove i Militari che operano in montagna si preparano ad affrontare terreni molto impegnativi, hanno messo a dura prova gli scarponi Bates “Alpine”: la prova su ghiacciaio è stata svolta in piena estate e in una settimana di marcia sono state raggiunte cinque vette a quota superiore ai 3500 metri (Punta di Finale, Caldura, Vallelunga; Cima sorgente; Palla Bianca). 
A causa del caldo, la neve dei ghiacciai era bagnata e pesante, estremamente “abrasiva”. 
Nella prima giornata, dopo circa quattro ore di marcia sulla neve bagnata con ramponi, si è registrata la prima infiltrazione di umidità all’interno dello scarpone.
Tuttavia, al termine della marcia si è potuto verificare che l’unica parte umida dello scarpone era quella anteriore interna di entrambe le scarpe.
Il secondo giorno, dopo altre sei ore di marcia su ghiaccio e neve, l’interno della scarpa ha iniziato a bagnarsi di più fino al tallone.
Il terzo giorno, al mattino lo scarpone era ancora bagnato, pur essendo rimasta l’intera nottata ad asciugare a temperatura ambiente presso il rifugio dove si è bivaccato.
Il quarto giorno di marcia sul ghiaccio, lo scarpone era ancora bagnato nella parte anteriore ma, comunque, caldo.

 USE ON GLACIER WITH CRAMPONS AND CLIMBING WITH RAMPONS

Glaciers of Val Senales (Alto Adige-Sud Tirol), a place where italian mountain troops train, put a strain on the boots Bates "Alpine": test was carried out on a glacier in summer and a week of walking five peaks, reaching at an altitude above 3500 meters (Punta Finale, Caldura, Vallelunga, Cima Sorgente; Palla Bianca).
Because of the summer heat, the snow of the glaciers was wet and heavy, extremely "abrasive".
On the first day, after about four hours of walking on wet snow with crampons, there was the first infiltration of moisture inside the boot.
However, at the end of the march has been shown that the only wet part of the boot was the inside the front inside both shoes.
The second day, after another six hours of walking on ice and snow, the inside of the shoe began to bathe more than up to the heel.
On the third day, the morning the boot was still wet, though remained the whole night to dry at room temperature at the hut where we bivouacked.
On the fourth day running on ice, the boot was still wet on the front but still hot.

 RAMPONI

Gli scarponi Bates “Alpine” sono ramponabili. Sono stati utilizzati sia ramponi con chiusura automatica che ramponi con chiusura semi automatica. 
La suola è sicuramente ben costruita ed efficace e trattiene perfettamente il rampone anche nei momenti di marcia più gravosi, su ghiaccio e roccia, conferendo sensazione di grande sicurezza all’operatore.

 CRAMPONS

Bates "Alpine" can be fitted with crampons. We used both with automatic locking and semi automatic locking crampons.
The sole is definitely well built and effective and holds the crampon perfectly even when walking on mud, ice and rock, giving the feeling of great security to the operator.

 IMPIEGO CON SCI

Gli scarponi Bates “Alpine” sono stati testati anche con sci marca Silveretta e attacchi Silveretta 400/500.
La prova su sci rappresenta la prova estrema per uno scarpone destinato alle truppe da montagna. Infatti, una scarpa la cui principale destinazione è quella della marcia, nel caso di impiego su sci deve garantire una perfetta tenuta laterale.
Gli scarponi Bates, utilizzati con sci lungo i ghiacciai si sono rivelati ottimi anche per questo impiego “estremo”, consentendo al militare che li ha testati di governare gli sci durante la discesa.

 USE WITH SKI

Bates "Alpine" boots have also been tested with attacks and ski SILVERETTE and SILVERETTE 400/500.
The test with ski is the ultimate test for a boot for mountain troops. In fact, a shoe whose main employment is to walk on mountains, used with ski must ensure “roadholding”.
Bates boots, used with ski down the glaciers have proved excellent for this "extreme" duty, allowing the military to govern ski.

 CONCLUSIONI.

Gli scarponi Bates “Alpine” sono stati utilizzati in zone difficili per un anno intero, da inverno ad inverno, passando per la stagione estiva anche se su ghiacciai della Val Senales (Alto Adige), con neve, ghiaccio, neve marcia.
Il loro punto di forza è sicuramente la suola Vibram che, con i suo disegno, garantisce un ottimo grip e drenaggio da fango e neve.
Perfetta anche la predisposizione per ramponi, sci e racchette da neve.
La tomaia è resistente grazie anche agli inserti in Cordura.
La linguetta regolabile mediante velcro garantisce elevato confort al piede.
Migliorabile, invece, la resistenza all’acqua e alla neve bagnata. Il militare che opera in ambiente di montagna non può rinunciare ai piedi asciutti.

 CONCLUSIONS.

Bates "Alpine" boots have been used in difficult areas for a whole year, from winter to winter, through the summer even though glaciers of Val Senales (Alto Adige), with snow, ice, and snow gear.
Their strength is definitely the Vibram sole which, with its design, provides excellent grip and drainage of mud and snow.
Perfect also with crampons and as ski shoes.
The upper is strong thanks to Cordura reinforcements.
The adjustable flap with Velcro ensures great comfort to the foot.
But, must be improved resistance to water and wet snow. The military runs on the mountain can not resign to have the feet dry.
