Fenix...una valida alternativa alla Surefire? Proviamo a dare una risposta analizzando la Fenix TK15.

 

Fenix...is it a good alternative to Surefire? Let's go trying to give you an answer analyzing the Fenix TK15. 

 

 

 

 

 La FenixLight nasce dall'unione d'intenti di alcuni ragazzi appassionati di sistemi d'illuminazione e insoddisfatti della bassa qualità di molte torce presenti sul mercato.

Con queste prerogative è stato ricercato un pool di ingegneri e tecnici e si è creata questa nuova ditta cinese, specializzata nella produzione di torce di alto livello tecnico, con varie destinazioni d'uso.

 

Ma da dove deriva il termine "Fenix"?

Credo sia facilmente intuibile anche se la scrittura differisce un pò da quella inglese. Il significato è quindi "Fenice" che nella cultura cinese viene identificata come una "cosa perfetta" e reputata un porta fortuna e beatitudine.

 

Basta dare uno sguardo al catalogo della Fenix per comprendere che viene coperto tutto il panorama dei sistemi d'illuminazione ma, per ora, torniamo alla TK15 che sarà oggetto di questa recensione.

 

 The Fenixlight was born from the union of some guys enthusiast of illumination systems and unsatisfied by the low quality of many flashlight on sell.

With this reason the searched for engineers and technicians to create this new chinese factory, specialized in the production of high technical level flashlight, with different use ways.

 

Where does the name "Fenix" come from?

I think it could be easy to image that even if it's quite different from the english word. So, the meaning is "Phoenix" and in the chinese culture is considered a "perfect thing" and and object carring lucky and bliss.

 

A look on the Fenix catalogue is enough to know that they produce a flashlight for any use destination but, at this moment, let's back to the TK15.

 

 

 

 

 La TK15, che fa parte della serie TK, è una torcia dall'aspetto accattivante e molto ben congeniata che unisce la solidità dell'alluminio T6 aeronautico, con anodizzatura nera di tipo III, in rispetto dei requisisti Mil-Spec, alla tecnologia Fenix guidata da microprocessore che garantisce un controllo digitale dell'illuminazione.

 

Sia dall'estetica, che dalle caratteristiche e funzionalità, che dalla presentazione sul sito della Fenix, la TK15 sembra destinata principalmente all'outdoor ma anche agli operatori di Search&Rescue e all'uso "tattico" montata su armi e repliche.

 

Subito qualche dato: la torcia è lunga 143mm con una parabola di diametro 35mm. Il peso, batterie incluse, è di 165 gr.

 

 The TK15 is part of the TK series and it has a attractive look and it's well thinked. It add the sturdyness of the T6 aeronautic aluminium (Premium Type III hard-anodized anti-abrasive finish) with the Fenix technology of the microprocessore that guide its output. 

 

By the look, the features and the Fenix introduction on its website, the TK15 seems to be destined to the outdoor use but also to the SAR "Search And Rescue" operators and to be mounted on weapons.

 

Quickly some details: the flashlight is 143mm. long with head of a diameter of 35mm. Its weight is 165 gr. batteries included. 

 

 

 

 

 La TK15 viene venduta con una dotazione standard composta da una custodia da cintura in cordura, una cover arancione per il tasto posteriore, due o-ring supplementari e un cinturino la polso.

 

 The TK is sold with a standard supply composed by a black Cordura pouch, an orange rubber cover for the back button, two o-ring gaskets and a cuff lanyard. 

 

 

La custodia con in evidenza i vari sistemi di aggancio alla cintura: tramite flap velcrato o tramite passante loop. 

The pouch with the attaching systems showed: you can use the velcroed loop or the fix loop.

 

 

L'unico sistema di chiusura della tasca è un flap velcrato, poco per l'uso intensivo che può essere richiesto alla TK15.

The only closure system of the pouch is made by a velcroed flap but I think it could be not enough for an intensive use.

 

 

 Come sono solito fare, anche questa volta esaminerò la torcia partendo dal fondo.

 

Il fondello è dotato del pulsante d'accensione, ricoperto in spessa gomma zigrinata, che ha la doppia funzione di illuminazione momentanea o accensione fissa. La selezione delle due modalità è gestibile tramite la pressione esercitata sul pulsante stesso: solo una decisa pressione a fondo determinerà l'accensione fissa della torcia mentre una pressione moderata permetterà un'illuminazione momentanea.

Da sottolineare che il contatto d'accensione, sia fissa che momentanea, si ha in "pressione" e non in "rilascio" come avevo evidenziato negativamente sulla replica della Surefire eM952v della Element, la quale aveva, appunto, il contatto d'accensione al rilascio e completamente inadatto all'utilizzo tattico.

 

 As I usually do, also this time I would like to review the flashlight starting from the back.

 

The tailcap has a on/off button covered by a anti-skid rubber cover. The switch has double functions so you can use it to momentary or costant lighting. You can momentary lighting pushing softly the switch instead an hard and deep push if you need a constant on lighting.

I wnat to underline that the electical contact that turn on the flashlight start when you push the button and not when you will release it as I negatively underlined testing the Surefire eM951 replica by Element. The contact on when you release the button is completely unusefull in a tactical use. 

 

 

 

 

 Il fondello è finemente zigrinato per facilitare l'accesso al vano batterie. Ha inoltre il foro per l'aggancio del correggiolo in dotazione.

L'impermeabilità in questa zona è garantita da un o-ring (che, personalmente, avrei raddoppiato) e ne vengono forniti due di scorta.

A completare la ricca dotazione standard, c'è una copertura di ricambio, in gomma arancione ad alta visibilità, per il tasto d'accensione, a conferma dell'indirizzo della TK15 verso il SAR (Search And Rescue).

 

Infine, la filettatura per il fondello e il relativo o-ring non sono apparsi lubrificati come mi sarei aspettato.

 

 The tailcap has anti-skid feature to help you in opening the batteries box. It has also an hole for the cuff lanyard.

The waterproof is given by an o-ring even if I would put two of it.

To complete the big standard supply, there's an high visibility orange rubber cover for the button to confirm that the TK15 has been thinked also per SAR uses.

 

Moreover, the threads of the tailcap and the o-ring are less oiled than I thought.

 Salendo verso l'alto troviamo l'anello "grip", filettato e con la doppia funzione di aumentare il grip, sia in trazione che in rotazione, che di blocco della clip da cintura. Difatti, per rimuovere quest'ultima, è necessario, rimuovere il fondello, svitare l'anello di grip e sfilare la clip.

Il comfort e sicurezza d'impugnatura donata da questo anello è realmente degno di nota: questo andrà a posizionarsi nell'incavo tra il dito indice e il medio e grazie alla sua forma scanalata, andrà ad alloggiare la zona palmare delle nocche in corrispondenza del suddetto incavo, determinando una presa veramente efficace.

 

 Going up we can find the gripping ring, threaded and with the double function of increasing the rotating and pulling grip and of lock the belt clip. So, to remove the belt clip, you need to remove first the tailcap, then remove the gripping ring and pull out the belt clip.

The comfort and the grip of this ring is very high: the ring will go between the first and the middle fingers and thanks to its grooved shape will go to lock itself on the palm of your hand. In the end, the grip action is very high.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Da sottolineare una cosa: il fondello presenta due incavi preferenziali per l'alloggiamento del pollice per l'accensione e l'impugnare la torcia sfruttando gli incavi dell'anello per il palmo della mano non sempre permette di raggiungerli.

Non mi è dato sapere se questa scelta sia voluta o meno (probabilmente non lo è stata), c'è comunque da evidenziare che alloggiando il pollice nell'incavo grande del pondello si può accendere la torcia, momentaneamente o in modo fisso, in modo piuttosto comodo mentre la stessa cosa non accade utilizzando l'incavo piccolo del fondello, dove è di sicuro privilegiata l'accensione temporanea (per accendere in modo costante la torcia è indispensabile puntare la punta del pollice sul tasto d'accesione).

 

Il corpo della torcia ospita le batterie, 2 x CR123A oppure 1 X 18650. 

Purtroppo però la Fenix ci segnala che le CR123A non possono avere voltaggio superiore ai 3V, come accade nelle batterie ricaricabili, per non danneggiare il circuito di gestione dell'erogazione del fascio luminoso.

Nel contatto verso il bulbo della torcia vi è però un'incongruenza con quanto esposto sul sito Fenix: la TK15 viene dichiarata come resistente alle cadute da 1,5m, grazie anche alla molla su entrambi in contatti delle batterie, con la funzione di dissipare la forza interna d'urto, mentre nel modello in esame la molla è presente solo nel fondello. Questo potrebbe essere causa di una minor resistenza agli urti e cadute accidentali.

 

 I want to underline that the taicap has two grooves for the thumb to switch on the flashlight and when you handle the flashlight, the position of the gripping ring doesn't allow to reach those grooves all the times.

Moreover I can tell you that reaching the big grooves with the thumb you can switch on momentary or constantly the flashlight while when you reach the little grooves, the constan on mode is more difficult to have, I don't know if it is wanted or not by Fenix, probably not.

 

The handle can fits 2 x CR123A or 1 x 18650.

Unfortunately the Fenix told me I can't use the rechargeable CR123A 3,7V with the TK15 due not damage the microprocessor.

On the Fenix website there's the picture of the old version of the TK15 and it shows two springs inside the handle to recude the batteries impact if the flashlight fell down. In the new model there's only one spring but I think that two could be better. Anyway Fenix declair the TK15 as 1,5m. impact resistant.

 Ed ora il fulcro di tutta la torcia, il complesso comprendente il bulbo (con la parabola e il led CREE XP-G R5, con una vita dichiarata di oltre 50.000 ore di lavoro) il circuito di regolazione digitale della luminosità e il tasto per la selezione delle potenze.

 Dopo questa descrizione esterna della torcia e prima del suo test sul campo, ritengo utile fare un breve riassunto e spiegazione delle principali caratteristiche fornite dalla Fenix.

La prima cosa che salta agli occhi è la dicitura ANSI/NEMA FL1 che, ovviamente, attira l'attenzione dando già l'idea che i dati forniti sono standardizzati secondo rigorosi schemi.

 

Ma cos'è la ANSI?

L'ANSI (American National Standard Institute) si occupa di sviluppare norme, procedimenti e servizi. Le norme approvate dalla ANSI garantiscono che le caratteristiche e i test effettuati siano standardizzati, ripetibili e, quindi, confrontabili tra prodotti dello stesso tipo.

In parole pratiche, queste norme ci permettono di valutare le differenze tra due prodotti dello stesso tipo che sono stati testati nello stesso modo.

L'adesione alle norme ANSI è sulla base della volontà delle singole aziende e la stessa ANSI è la rappresentante degli USA nella ISO.

 

L'ANSI/NEMA FL1 rappresenta invece le norme rispetto ai sistemi di illuminazione, in questo modo, tutti i produttori di questi sistemi sono tenuti ad eseguire le misurazioni secondo meotdi standardizzati.

In breve, queste sono le caratteristiche riportate dalla Fenix:

 

 After this external description and before the tests, I think usefull to do a short summary of the main features of the TK15.

The first thing you can see with big interest is the label ANSI/NEMA FL1 that tells you that this flashlight has been tested under serious controls.

 

But, what's the ANSI?

The ANSI (American National Standard Institute) develops rules, proceedings and services. The ANSI approved rules assure that the features and the tests are standardized, repeatable, so you can compare same products from different brands.

To join into ANSI standard is voluntary and the ANSI is the USA rappresentative in ISO.

 

The ANSI/NEMA FL1 is instead the group of rules about lighting systems so all the producers joined into the ANSI have to observe ANSI standard.

 La TK15 è predisposta anche per il montaggio su arma.

E' necessario, per questa operazione, acquistare separatamente un anello per i rail system. Può essere inoltre acquistato un comando remoto, con cavo spiralato, che presenta anche un tasto d'accensione laterale, paragonabile al tasto posteriore del fondello della Surefire M961XM07.

Il motivo di questo tasto supplementare è, a mio avviso, quello di mantenere funzionante la torcia anche a cavo spiralato danneggiato, come può facilmente accadere durante un uso operativo reale.

 

 The TK15 can be mounted on the weapons too.

To do that you need to but a metal ring to attach it to the rail system. Moreover you can buy a remote switch that has also a side button, like the Surefire M961XM07 tailcap.

I think that button is done to make the flashlight working also is the switch cable is damaged as could happen during real actions. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 FUNZIONAMENTO e TEST SUL CAMPO

 

La TK15 è molto semplice da utilizzare ma realmente ben studiata.

L'accesione, sia temporanea che fissa, è affidata al tasto posteriore, modulando la pressione esercitata su di esso.

Le varie potenze sono selezionabili tramite una singola pressione del tasto grigio, a sfioro, posto sulla testa della torcia e con modalita 5lm->push->47lm->push->143lm->push->337lm->push->5lm...

Questo sistema è veramente ben studiato: la torcia ha un sistema interno di memorizzazione dell'ultima potenza settata e questa rimane tale anche rimuovendo e sostituendo le batterie, inoltre, per inserire la modalità strobo (composta da un segnale SOS) è necessario tenere premuto il tasto di selezione per circa un secondo.

La funzione strobo non viene memorizzata allo spegnimento della torcia.

 

Tutto molto semplice e funzionale, come si richiede ad un torcia che potrebbe affiancarci in situazioni dove i fronzoli e le "estreme finezze" potrebbero essere inutili se non pericolose per la loro inefficacia.

 

 FUNCTIONING and TEST ON FIELD

 

The TK15 is very easy to be used but really well thinked.

You can momentary or constant on it using the tailcap button.

You can select the output pushing the grey side button on the head of the flashlight and it has this cicle: 5lm->push->47lm->push->143lm->push->337->push->5lm

This system is well done: the flashlight has an internal memory to memorize the last output selection also if you remove the batteries (probably due a trim).

Moreover, pushing the side button for more than a second will start the SOS strobe mode at 337 lumens.

The strobe function has not memorized when you switch off the flashlight.

 

It's all very easy as you could ask to a flashlight you want with you in bad situations, where the unusefull features can be dangerous.

 

 TEST D'IMMERSIONE: Il test d'immersione è stato svolto ad una profondità di circa 1,5m per più di 3h ed ha evidenziato una buona tenuta stagna.

 

 WATERPROOF TEST: the test has been done at 1,5m underwater for 3h and showed a good waterproof features.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Per quel che riguarda il test d'illuminaizone vero e proprio, mi sono affidato alla classica comparazione con due "mostri sacri" dell'illuminazione tattica: la Surefire G2 old version (60lm ad incandescenza) e la Surefire M961XM07 old version (125lm ad incandescenza).

 

Qui di seguito un test d'illuminazione sui 35m.

Per questo test sulla media distanza ho deciso di allontanare la torcia dalla posizione della fotocamera in modo da non confondere il lettore che vedrebbe illuminata la zona immediatamente anteriore, inficiando il fulcro del test che vuole essere il fuoco sui 35m. (o, in parole semplici, come e quanto illumini la torcia a 35m.).

 

 About the lighting tests, I decided to compare the TK15 with due "big" of tactical illumination systems: the Surefire G2 old version (60 lumens incadescent lamp) and the Surefire M961XM07 old version (125 lumens incandescent lamp).

 

Below the lighting test on a 35m long field.

For this test I decided to move away the flashlight from the camera to not confuse the reader who would see clear the zone near the camera anche could not understand how that output lighting the target at 35m as I want to.

 Impressioni: la TK15 ha il vantaggio della potenza (output) selezionabile rispetto alle due "competitors". Il fascio è ben focalizzato e permette un'illuminazione precisa, come richiesto ad una torcia tattica.

Come è possibile vedere dalla sequenza sopra, i lumens di output possono ritenersi effettivi dato che la G2 da 60 lumens e la M961 da 125 lumens si pongono tra le potenze di 47 e  143 lumens della TK15.

 

Oltre all'illuminazione sui 35 m., che reputo essere una giusta distanza di test per l'illuminazione in zone urbane, intense come azioni tra gli edifici, vi è l'illuminazione in CQB "Close Quarter Battle" che può prevedere la necessità di un'illuminazione a corto-cortissimo raggio e, quindi, ho deciso di proporre una comparazione sui 6m.

 

 Impressions: the TK15 has the advantage of the selecting output while the two competitors has not. The light beam is focused as I ask from a tactical flashlight.

As you can see above, the lumens are real due the G2 (60lm) and the M961 (125lm) beam fall between the 47 an 143 lumens ones of the TK15.

 

Apart the 35m. illumination test I think can be a right distance to lighting urban zone (meaning "ligting and moving out buildings"), there's the CQB "Close Quarter Battle" illumination that can need to lighting also at a short distance so I decided to do a test on 6m.

 Impressioni: l'illuminazione è buona e focalizzata a tutti i livelli di potenza e risulta quindi utilmente utilizzabile anche a corte distanze come i 6m. del test. 

Da segnalare che la fotocamera ha invertito la percezioni delle tonalità (o del "calore") dei fasci di luce: la TK, dal vero, risulta avere un fascio bianco mentre la G2 old version ad incandescenza risulta avere una tonalità più gialla (la foto riguardo i 143 lumens purtroppo è rimasta sfocata).

 

I test sono stati eseguiti utilizzando CR123A originali Surefire nuove.

 

Riguardo la prova "pratica" di utilizzo e "porto", la TK15 è una torcia di generose dimensioni e molto corposa, quindi adatta ad un uso intensivo e/o professionale.

Durante i test la TK5 è stata utilizzata per l'outdoor e per servizi di emergenza medica su ambulanza (oltre che per l'utilizzo "tattico" su replica per l'airsoft) rivelandosi sempre efficace, comoda ed immediata nell'uso.

 

 Impressions: the lighting is good and focused at all the outputs so you can use is also and very short distance, less than 6m.

I want to underline that the camera has inverted the "calor" of the bemas: so the real TK beams are white while the G2 (incandescent lamp) beam is more yellow (unfortunately the 143 lumens test picture is blurred).

 

The tests have been done using new Surefire original CR123A batteries.

 

About the common use and carry, the Tk15 is a flashlight with medium dimensions so suitable for intensive/professional uses.

During the test, the TK15 has been used for outdoor activities and for ambulance emergency response service  (and on AEGs for "tactical-game use") and it has been always effective, comfortable and usefull.

 

 

 

 

 

 CONCLUSIONI

La TK15 è stata una piacevole sorpresa nel panorama di "pressapochismo" delle torce "low cost" che hanno invaso il mercato dei sistemi d'illuminazione "tattica".

E' bella, solida ed accattivante ma anche resistente e versatile.

Le prestazione sono veramente notevoli, come dimostrato sia dalle prove d'illuminazione sia dalle caratteristiche prima enunciate.

La TK15 si presta ottimamente all'uso per le attività di outdoor ma anche per attività professionali come il SAR "Search And Rescue", i servizi di emergenze e vigilanza (o Law Enforcement).

Personalemente vedo questa torcia più a suo "agio" in mano ad un soccorritore o sul cinturone di "police officer" piuttosto che montata su un'arma lunga anche se, le caratteristiche e i supporti per farlo ci sono tutti. 

Il rapporto qualità-prezzo è decisamente vantaggioso dato che è possibile acquistare la TK15 a poco più di 80€ presso la Coltelleria Collini.

 

Al termine di questa recensione desidero ringraziare la Fenix, nella persona della Sig.ra Elliott, per averci permesso di testare questa torcia e la Kunzi spa per aver fatto in modo che la torcia stessa arrivasse siano a me.

 

 CONCLUSIONI

 

The TK15 has been a good surprise in a world of poor quality low cost flashlight for airsoft and outdoor market.

It's pretty, sturdy and attractive but also resistant and versatile.

The performances are very good as showed by the illumination tests and its features.

The TK15 can be used for outdoor activities, SAR "Search And Rescue" operations, emergency response services and law enforcement.

Personally I see this flashlight more in the hand of a rescuer or on a duty belt of a police officer than mounted on a weapon even if it has all the features and gadgets to do that.

The quality/price ratio is very good because you can buy this TK15 at 80€ from the Coltelleria Collini.
