Quando la Sonim Technologies, ditta produttrice di questo telefono, decise di costruire un cellulare che fosse davvero resistente, cercò dei parametri su cui basarsi, ma non esistevano. Così li hanno creati e costruito un telefono che li superasse.

Con questi standard nasce l'XP1, modello base della Sonim Technologies; gli altri modelli mantengono gli stessi standard di resistenza ma offrono in aggiunta alcune funzionalità non presenti nell'XP1 come la fotocamera, il GPS e la funzione torcia.
Il Sonim XP 1 è certificato IP-54 e MIL 810F; la seconda è una certificazione di tipo militare, ciò significa che il telefono è stato giudicato idoneo anche ad un impiego in ambito operativo.

The XP1 is born and passes these standards; it's the first access model of Sonim Technologies. Other models have the same ruggedization standards but have also some extra features as digital camera, GPS and led torch function.
Sonim XP 1 is IP-54 and MIL 810F certified; the second certificate means that it's able for employment in military operations.

I tasti sono larghi e ben distanziati fra loro in modo da consentire una loro facile pressione anche indossando i guanti, senza il rischio di premerne involontariamente più di uno.
Al centro del telefono troviamo i 4 tasti direzione, un quadrato composto da due “L” con al centro il pulsante di conferma.
Il corpo del telefono è costruito in gomma indurita modellata con un doppio processo, per resistere agli urti anche violenti; ruvida e opaca, molto gradevole al tatto. I pulsanti sono stati costruiti per resistere a centinaia di migliaia di pressioni, in plastica lucida con i caratteri ben visibili.
Lo schermo è costituito da 2 strati separati da una intercapedine, in modo da proteggere quello interno e poter sostituire quello esterno nel caso si rompesse; antiriflesso e antigraffio, non molto ampio rispetto ai recenti standard ma non dimentichiamoci che non stiamo parlando di uno smartphone e che questo telefono non lo acquistiamo per le sue caratteristiche multimediali bensì per la sua resistenza.

Large buttons well spaced allow an easily operating also wearing gloves, without the risk to press unintentionally more buttons at the same time.
In the middle there are the 4 navigation arrows keys, a square composed by 2 “L” with the main button in the middle.
The phone body is built with a hardened rubber molded by a dual injection process, so it can resist to severe impacts. The body is rough and matt, good when handling.
Buttons are tested to resist to hundreds of thousands pressures; bright plastic with white visible characters.
Screen is a double layer, so the inside one is protected and you can replace the external if broken; no-glare and no-scratch, it's not large compared to recent standards but we can't forget that it's not a smartphone and we haven't buyed it for its multimedial features but for its toughness.

 Lato destro; i piccoli pulsanti in alto regolano il volume mentre il tasto grosso attiva la chiamata PTT (push-to-talk).
Il push-to-talk è un servizio che deve essere attivato con il proprio provider di servizi telefonici e funziona come nelle radio VHF/UHF, cioè solo una persona alla volta parla e tutte le altre impegnate nella conversazione posso solamente ascoltare, ma appoggiandosi alla rete GPRS garantisce segretezza nella comunicazione e supera i limiti di distanza tipici delle radio.
Non ha costi legati alla durata della conversazione ma normalmente si paga una quota fissa mensile.

Push-to-talk is a service that must be activated by your service provider and it has the same functionally of a VHF/UHF radio, so only one person at once can speak and the others must only listen to him; but using GPRS net it's safe from unwanted people that can listen to your conversation and it doesn't have distance limit of normal radios.
This service doesn't need to pay per minutes of use but usually you have to pay a fixed price a month.

 Accendiamo il telefono. Display essenziale, con la qualità grafica dei primi cellulari a colori. Alcuni direbbero “scarno”, ma in questo caso dobbiamo dire “intuitivo”, perché per l’uso a cui è destinato questo telefono è questo che conta.
Sopra lo schermo, al centro, troviamo l’auricolare per le conversazioni.
Il microfono si trova invece sotto al telefono, molto vicino al coperchio dei connettori cuffie e USB.

Il Sonim XP 1 è un TriBand, ossia sfrutta le frequenze 900/1800/1900 mhz; purtroppo non dispone di connettività EDGE, UMTS o HSDPA.
Il sistema operativo installato è su piattaforma Philips Nexperia 6120.
Dotato di processore Arm-9, ha una memoria interna di 10MB, e può memorizzare fino a 1.000 sms da 100 caratteri. 
Il telefono dispone di bluetooth, però la versione 1.2 che essendo datata non garantisce la compatibilità con i tanti accessori recenti.
