Confrontiamo oggi i 2 sistemi di idratazione delle maggiori marche nella misura piú diffusa, cioè con capienza di 100oz ovvero 3.1lt: BlackHawk Hydrastorm e Camelbak WaterBeast Omega Reservoir.
 

Let's compare the hydration system of the two main brand in the common size, 100oz / 3lt: BlackHawk Hydrastorm and Camelbak Omega Reservoir.

A prima vista...

 

L'Hydrastorm si presenta in forma rettangolare di un colore grigio/azzurro sulla parte anteriore e nero nella tela che ricopre il retro.
L'Omega è invece di forma stondata che va a restringersi verso la parte inferiore; di colore fumé scuro, è in gomma sia nella parte anteriore che sul retro.
Entrambi con le tacche di livello di riempimento impresse sulla gomma, l'Hydrastorm ha un'aletta all'interno che divide verticalmente la sacca e che ha la funzione di evitare spanciamenti dovuti alla pressione verso il basso dell'acqua, problema che nell'Omega è risolto dalla sua forma ristretta nella parte inferiore.
La Camelbak per la realizzazione della sacca ha sviluppato un materiale speciale molto resistente, "WaterBeast", per ovviare alle molte rotture lamentate in altri sistemi di idratazione dagli operatori alla guida di veicoli.
Questa sacca ha addirittura anche un sistema che previene la formazione di muffe e germi, inconveniente certo quando l'acqua ristagna, chiamato "HydroGuard", che elimina inoltre il cattivo odore dell'acqua chiusa in contenitori di materiale plastico.
 

First approach

The Hydrastorm comes in a rectangular gray / blue color on front side and in black color for the canvas covering the back.
The Omega is rounded shape that go to shrink to the bottom, in dark smoke color, is made of rubber at the front and back.
Both with fill level notches marked on rubber, Hydrastorm is divided vertically inside the bag with a lug that has the function to avoid swelling due to the downward pressure of water; Omega solve the problem by its restricted form at the bottom.
Camelbak to make this bag has developed a very durable special material "WaterBeast", to solve the problem of many broken hydration systems weared by operators while driving.
This bag even has a system that prevents mold and germs, some inconvenience when the water stagnates; called "Hydroguard” it also eliminates the odor of the water in closed plastic containers.

 

Il tubo dell'Hydrastorm ha un diametro maggiore rispetto a quello dell'Omega, ma la gomma è piú sottile e debole.
Nell'Hydrastorm il tubo ha un innesto in plastica filettato, con o-ring di guarnizione, che si avvita al beccuccio di uscita della sacca.
La Camelbak in questo particolare non si è impegnata molto, innestando semplicemente il tubo a pressione sopra un beccuccio, seghettato per fare maggior presa, senza però pregiudicarne l'affidabilità. I nuovi modelli di sacca invece dovrebbero adottare lo stesso aggancio che vedremo più avanti nel boccaglio.

Hydrastorm tube has a greater diameter than Omega, but the rubber is less thick and weaker.
Hydrastorm tube has a plastic threaded plug whit a o-ring seal, which is screwed to the exit nozzle of the bag.
Camelbak doesn’t make this particular very well, simply inserting the tube on the nozzle, threaded to make better grip. New models of Camelbak bags adopt the same plug that we will see later in the mouthpiece.
 

L'Hydrastorm ha un normale tappo a vite con guarnizione e anello di sicurezza (per non perderlo), in tutto e per tutto simile a quello che troviamo in una borraccia.
L'Omega ha invece un tappo ad inserimento, cioè ha la filettatura verso l'esterno e si avvita dentro alla bocca di riempimento, esattamente come per molti tappi dei serbatoi delle automobili.
A differenza della bocca di riempimento dell'Hydrastorm, quella dell'Omega è molto ampia e consente di infilarci una mano, utile per poter pulire l'interno della sacca; ha inoltre integrata una linguetta (in basso) che funge da maniglia e che consente di sostenere la sacca con la bocca rivolta verso l'alto per agevolarne il riempimento.
La bocca integra inoltre un gancio che fissa la sacca all'anello presente in molte tasche per sistemi di idratazione, per evitare che svuotandosi scivoli verso il basso.

Hydrastorm has a standard screw cap with seal and locking ring (to avoid lose it), similar to the cap of a canteen.
Omega has a special plug, that has the thread to the outside and is screwed into the mouth of filling, as a many closures of car shells.
Unlike the mouth filling of Hydrastorm, the Omega is very wide and you can insert you hand into the bag, helpful to clean easily the inside of the bag. It has also integrated a tab (below) working as a handle to hold the bag with the mouth facing up for easy filling.
The mouth also includes a hook fixing the bag to the ring you find in many hydration pouches, to avoid sliding downward while emptying.

 

Qui le differenze si fanno molto marcate: l'Hydrastorm ha il classico boccaglio con apertura della valvola mediante scorrimento verso l'esterno, l'Omega ha invece una levetta On-Off e il boccaglio estraibile, premendo il pulsante a lato del raccordo, per facilitarne la pulizia o l'eventuale sostituzione.
Nell'Hydrastorm il rivestimento del tubo è in sottile neoprene ricoperto da un leggero strato di cordura, mentre nell'Omega è tutto neoprene e di maggior spessore, garantendo un più alto potere coibentante.

Here differences are really definite: Hydrastorm has the classic mouthpiece with the valve opening by slide it to the outside; but Omega has a on-off switch and a removable mouthpiece, pressing the button on the side to easy cleaning or replace it.
Hydrastorm lining tube is of thin neoprene covered with a thin layer of cordura; Omega has only neoprene cover but thicker than Hydrastorm, providing a higher insulating power.

 

Conclusioni

Sebbene si tratti in entrambi i casi di ottimi prodotti, il prezzo praticamente identico mi induce a consigliare con decisione l'acquisto del Camelbak che risulta nettamente superiore in qualità al suo concorrente.
 

Conclusions

Although both are excellent products, the equal price leads me to definitely recommend to buy the Camelbak which has a higher quality respect its competitor.
