 Questa è la Surefire M961XM07, una delle torce per armi leggere più potenti attualmente in commercio, nata per l'illuminazione a corto-medio raggio.

La torcia è costruita in alluminio aereonautico anodizzato su specifiche militari e ricavata dal pieno, è lunga 20,8 cm per un peso al netto delle 3 batterie CR123A e del remoto di 298 +/- 2 gr.

 This is the Surefire M961XM07, one of the most powerfull flashlight for light weapons currently on sell, built for close to medium lighting range.

The flashlight is made in aerospace aluminium anodized according to military specs and built from a full aluminium block. It's 20,8 cm long and a weight of 298 +/- 2 gr., 3 cr123a and remote switch included.

 All'inizio dell'analisi della M961 la prima cosa che ci ha colpiti è stata  la possibilità di essere scomposta in 4 parti che, letteralmente, si avvitano tra loro, peraltro senza possibilità di errore nel rimontaggio grazie a diversi diametri e lunghezze delle parti filettate.

 When we've started our M961 analysis we found that it could be separated in 4 parts screwed one to another.

You can't make mistakes reassembling the parts thanks to different diameters and length of the threads.

 Partendo dall'estremo “luminoso” troviamo la testa della torcia.
La testa metallica ha un diametro che supera di poco i 4 cm. mentre la parabola d'illuminazione, fissa dentro la struttura, ha un diametro di 3 cm. effettivi. Per rimuovere la parabola è necessario svitare la parte anteriore della testa e rimuovere il vetro temperato.
Nella foto sotto è possibile osservare la sensibile differenza di diametro tra la M961 a destra e una Surefire G2 a sinistra, che ha un diametro esterno di 3,2cm. e una parabola di 2,6 cm).

 Starting from the lighting point, we meet the head of the flashlamp.
The metal head has a 4 cm. diameter while the reflector has a 3 cm. one and it's stable in the head, to unmount you have to unscrew the front of the head and remove the tempered glass.

In the picture below you can see the big difference betwen the M961 head diameter (rihgt) and a G2  head diameter (left, with an external diamter of 3,2 cm. and a reflector one of 2,6 cm.)

 La M961 rientra nella categoria delle “incandescent lamps” ed utilizza due modelli di vere e proprie lampadine: la MN10 che è in grado di emettere 125 lumens per circa 1h (ne vengono fornite  due nella confezione) e la MN11 che emette 225 lumens per circa 20 minuti (acquistabile separatamente).
Al momento in cui scriviamo non sono ancora disponibili upgrade della seria M961/962 alla tecnologia LED, come per la gran parte delle torce Surefire, ma la ditta stessa ci informa che stanno sviluppando vari kit di conversione per questa torcia anche se non si sbilanciano su quando saranno disponibili al pubblico.

 The M961 belongs to “incandescent lamps” category and it can runs two different lamps: MN10 with an aoutput of 125 lumens for 1h and MN11 with an output of 225 lumens for 20 minutes.

At this moment there are not LED upgrades available for M961 but Surefire has told us they were  developing several LED conversion kits for this flashlight but they didn't say when they will be on sell.

 Il fatto che venga utilizzata la tecnologia ad incandescenza per l'illuminazione, ci fa capire il perchè della scritta “Caution: hot surface” stampato sulla testa metallica.

 It's easy to understand why Surefire wrote “Caution: hot surface” on the metallic head...it become very hot!

 Passando al secondo segmento, troviamo quello che è il punto di congiunzione tra il bulbo e il vano batterie.
Questo settore, infatti ospita la parte posteriore della lampadina e la mette in contatto con le batterie.
Nella foto sotto e anche possibile osservare la lavorazione interna dell'alluminio.

 Switching to the second segment we find the conjunction point betwen the lighting head and the batteries case.
This sector holds the lamp back and put it in contact with the batteries.

In the picture below you can see the internal aluminium processing.

 Ogni filettatura è dotata di o-ring per rendere stagno l'interno della torcia e ve ne sono due a protezione della filettatura del fondello, dato che questo funziona da circuito di spegnimento di sicurezza quando svitato di mezzo giro in senso antiorario.

 Each thread has a o-ring to assure water-proof  and there are two o-ring to protect the conjunction betwen the tailcap and the body because it works as safety off-selector turning it ¼ round anticlockwise.

 La M961 si differenzia dalla gemella M962 per il sistema di aggancio della torcia all'arma.
La 961 è dotata di un classico aggancio per slitte Picatinny con due grosse viti dalla testa zigrinata sulle quali è possibile agire anche con i guanti e permettono una stretta realmente forte ma anche un'agile apertura, proprio grazie al forte grip. Una nota della solita attenzione ai particolari della Surefire è il fatto che le vite sono dotate di un fondo corsa per cui non è possibile perderle nelle manovre di distacco della torcia dal rail.
La 962 invece è dotata di un sistema a leva che permette di stringere la morsa sul rail con un unico movimento.

Il sistema di aggancio consiste in due emiparte di cui, la parte sinistra lo ancora al corpo della torcia con due viti Torx mentre la parte sinistra è quella libera che permette i movimenti di apertura e chiusura.

Agendo sulle due viti Torx è possibile rimuovere il sistema di aggancio lasciando liberi due fori filettati che permettono di montare un sistema di aggancio Throwlever in alternativa al sistema standard.

 The M961 is different from it's twin only for the mounting system for Picatinny rails.
The M961 has a dual thumbscrew clamp for Picatinny rails that you can use also with gloves. Besides you can't lose the screws because you can't unscrew the to the end of the threads.
Instead the M962 has a throw-lever clamp for Picatinny railsand you can attach the flashlight on your weapon with a single action.

You can detach the dual thumbscrew clamp system from the flashlight unscrewing two Torx screws.

Doing that the flashlight shows two supports with two screw holes which allow to change the Dual Thumscrew systema with the Throwlever one.

 Vediamo ora la parte più tecnologica di tutta la torcia: il fondello con remoto XM07.
Il fondello si avvita sul corpo della torcia grazie ad una struttura metallica con scanalature che ne facilitano la presa mentre il resto è in materiale plastico.
Questo fondello permette l'accensione della torcia in molteplici modi: schiacciando il tasto in modo leggero è possibile accendere la torcia momentaneamente mentre, schiacciandolo a fondo, la torcia rimane accesa finchè non lo premeremo nuovamente.
Il pulsante, ricoperto da gomma, è grosso e zigrinato il che lo rende facilmente azionabile anche con i guanti, inoltre è protetto da due ali di plastica che lo proteggono dagli urti.
Questo mostra, ancora una volta, quanto siano curati i prodotti della Surefire e quanto loro siano attenti anche ai piccoli particolari: il pulsante è protetto su 3 lati su 4, difatti  le ali plastiche provvedono ai lati superiore e inferiore mentre il connettore per il remoto lo protegge sul lato destro.
Il lato sinistro, una volta ben posizionato ruotando il fondello, ha esattamente la forma per accogliere il pollice di una mano guantata.

 Now we can take a look of the most technologic part of the flashlamp: the XM07 Tailcap with remote switch.
The tailcap is screwed on the flashlight body thanks to a metallic structure with big grooves to improve the grip while the other parts are made in impact-resistan polymer.
With this tailcap you can swith on the flashlinght in different ways: you can soft-push the buttom for momentary light but you can also hard-push the buttom for a costant lihgt and you will have to push it again to turn it off.
The button is large and covered by a milled rubber coat so you can use it also wearing gloves. Besides, it's protected by two plastic “wings”, above and below and from the remote switch female connector on the righside. When you set the tailcap in the right way, the leftside has the really form of the thumb of a gloved hand.

This shows how Surefire products are well-groomed  and how Surefire pay attention to details.

 Accanto a questo sistema c'è connettore femmina per il comando remoto, protetto da un coperchietto in plastica con ritenzione anti-smarrimento.

 Close to the buttom there is a female connector for remote switch and it's protected but a plastic coat with retension system to not lose it.

 Il cavo del comando remoto è lungo 16 cm. non presenta scritte o marchi e, sia esteticamente che qualitativamente, risulta inferiore rispetto all'esemplare presentato sul sito web della Surefire.
Il pulsante all'estremità del cavo funziona bene ma risulta identico ad un prodotto fatto artigianalmente mentre il cavo, che ha uno spessore di circa 3 mm. presenta una piega per niente in linea con gli altissimi standard di rifiniture, come è possibile vedere nella foto sottostante.

Come contraltare, il sistema di aggancio del remoto al fondello non delude le aspettative e presenta un funzionale sistema anti-sgancio accidentale che impone all'utente di trazionare e contemporaneamente ruotare il connettore maschio del comando remoto per poterlo rimuovere.
Il trazionare posteriormente il connettore, come avverrebbe se il remoto si impigliasse durante i movimenti, non determinerà quindi il distacco del remoto dal fondello bensì lo sgancio del suo tasto dal supporto velcrato, indubbiamente il punto di presa più debole.

 The cable is 16 cm. long and hasn't marks but it seems to be less well-made and less catchy than the one shown on Surefire website.
The button works well but it seems to be “home-made” and not from Surefire.
The cable has a diameter of 3 mm. and has a bad fold out of the high Surefire standard (you can see the fold in the picture below).

The connector to attach the remote switch to the flashlight doesen't disappoint our expectations and shows a good system against accidentaly detach.
Thanks to this system you cant' detach the remote from the flashlight only pulling it back but you have to pull and turn it.

With this system if you will entangle the remote switch in twigs or other, you will not detach it (and lose it) but ou detach its buttom with velcro who is the point with less keep force.

Prova sul campo - Test on field

 Per saggiare quanto dichiarato dalla Surefire, ovvero che la M961 sarebbe progettata per illuminazione a corto-medio raggio, abbiamo voluto effettuare una prova comparativa, in notturna, con una Surefire G2 con bulbo originale da 65 lumens.

 To test the M961 close-medium lighting range, as Surefire says, we 've compared in a night test a Surefire G2 with standard 65 lumens bulb and the M961 with standard MN10 – 125 lumens lamp.

 Altre prove effetuate ci consentono di affermare che la M961 è assolutamente inutilizzabile come utility-light per la ricerca di cose a distanza ravvicinata, controllare una tasca sul vest tattico ed operazioin simili, questo a causa della sua luce, potente ed estremamente chiara, che non permette di distinguere gli oggetti più piccoli, anche a causa di un poderoso effetto abbagliante di ritorno.

 Other tests we've done allow us to tell the M961 is absolutely unusable for “utility-light” works like searching item at low distance, check something on your tactical vest and similar operations. The cause is the extremely powerful and bright light beam that doesen't permit to distinguish betwen little items or see minor details.

Conclusioni - Conclusions

 La Surefire M961XM07 è una torcia tattica per impieghi a corto-medio raggio, voluminosa e corposa ma che restituisce peso e lunghezza sottoforma di un fascio di luce potente e centrato, nitido come la Surefire ci ha abituato a vedere.

Con le 3 batterie CR123A il suo punto di equilibrio è centrato sulla parte anteriore del sistema di aggancio al rail, quindi si può dire che sia piuttosto bilanciata.

Il meglio di questa torcia lo si può apprezzare a distanze superiori ai 10m., risulta invece praticamente inutilizzabile per i piccoli lavori di precisione o per vedere piccoli dettagli a corte-cortissime distanze.

Il suo peso sulla parte anteriore dell'arma, o sua replica, si sente anche se non in maniera insopportabile e anche l'ingombro dimensionale è di un certo rilievo.

Come tutti i prodotti Surefire, la qualità tecnica di questa torcia è molto alta ma anche il suo prezzo non è da meno.

 The Surefire M961XM07 is a tactical flashlight for close-medium lighting range, big and full-bodied but with a powerfull beam of light, as is usual for Surefire products.

With 3 Cr123A,  the point of balance of the M961 is set on the front part of the dual thumbscrew clamp system so we can say it's balanced.

The best work of this flashlight is over 10m., before that distance is almost unusable to do little works or look at details.

You will fell its weight on your weapon or aeg but it's well endurable and also the dimensional encumbrance is high.

Like all the Surefire products, technical quality is very high...but also its price.
