 LA FONDINA

Le fondine rigide sono ormai le preferite da parte delle forze armate di tutto il mondo, sia per le loro caratteristiche di stabilità che di robustezza e praticità e questo non può che rappresentare una forte attrattiva per il mondo del Softair che, a sua volta, ha fatto propria questa tipologia di “holster”.
 

La fondina in oggetto è la Tactical Thigh Holster della Blade-Tech (Level 2), fondina rigida preformata, in questo caso, per accogliere una SigSauer P226R.

 THE HOLSTER

The stiff holster are preferred by the amy all over the world, both for the stability and for the strenght and praticalness. These features are very attractive for the airsoft players too, so many of them decided to use this kind of holsters.

The holster of this review is the Tactical Thigh Holster by Blade-Tech (level 2), stiff holster for a SigSauer P226R in this case.

 La fondina è ricavata da un foglio di Kydex piegato e formato sul calco della pistola che dovrà accogliere.

La superficie è ruvida e opaca, il che dona alla fondina un fascino “tattico” non da poco.
La base invece, che alla vista sembra fatta di un materiale diverso, viene indicata come in “polimeri” senza ulteriori informazioni.
 

La fondina viene venduta con la sua base cosciale, due fasce per assicurarla e la grossa fascia per agganciarla al cinturone, priva, questa, di sistema di aggancio/sgancio rapido a Fastex ma di un anello velcrato.

 The holster is made by a Kydex sheet folded on the mould of the gun it will store.

The surface is coarse and matt and this give a good "tactical attractive" to the holster.

The thigh support seems to be made of a different material and it's described as made of "polymer" without further informations.

The holster is sold with the thigh support, two thigh straps and a big strap to attach it to the belt. This last strap has not a rapid attach system like a Fastex but a hook-and-loop system.  

 La fondina è agganciata alla base tramite 3 viti a croce, con l'aggiunta di due “distanziatori” in gomma tra la base e la fondina.
Questa scelta risulta differente rispetto a quella della ben conosciuta Safariland che ha dotato le fondine di brugole ed ha alloggiato all'interno della struttura, una chiave per aprirle.

La parte superiore risulta aperta per contenere i sistemi di puntamento posteriori della pistola, evitando così pericolosi inceppamenti durante l'estrazione rapida.

 The holster is attached on the thigh support through 3 screw with 2 rubber spacers between holster and support.

This lock system is different than the Safariland one that uses allens instead the screws and Safariland supplies an allen key locked in the back of the holster so you don't have to carry any tool.

The upper side is open to contains the back sights of the gun, avoiding the possible conk out during rapid extraction.

 La parte posteriore della fondina risulta invece completamente aperto e rappresenta il sistema di regolazione della forza di trattenuta dell'arma.

Il sistema di regolazione è composta da due viti a croce e una specie di dado piatto, mantenuti distanziati da due “distanziatori” in gomma uguali a quelli che mantengono la fondina staccata dalla base.

Da questa angolazione (foto sotto) è possibile capire il motivo dell'esistenza dei distanziatori tra fondina e base: la fondina risulta obbligatoriamente inclinata verso l'esterno nella parte alta, per consentire l'alloggiamento della parte posteriore dell'arma, di sicuro più corposa del resto della struttura.
Inoltre anche i supporti del sistema di sgancio necessitano di spazio tra fondina e base, sia come ingombro fisico che di necessità di movimento, come vedremo in seguito analizzando il sistema di sgancio.

 The back of the holster is completely opened and it's the adjusting system to adjust the grip of the holster on the weapon.

This system is made by two screws with two rubber distancers that space the holster from the base support.

From this point of view (picture below) you can understand the meaning of the distancers: the holster is obliqualy turned to the external side in its upper part to allow the biggest part of the weapon, the back.

Besides, also the unlock system needs space between holster and base to do its work. 

 L'interno della fondina è lasciato grezzo, nel senso che non è stata prevista una qualche forma di “liner” interno a protezione l'arma.
Su questo punto alcune scuole di pensiero indicano il liner interno in tessuto, come un pericolo per la possibile perdita di parti di esso dovuta allo sfregamento e quindi al possibile accumulo su parti vitali del meccanismo dell'arma.
Ovviamente questo “pericolo” non esiste per quanto riguardi le repliche per il Softair.
La scelta di non inserire il “liner” determina, in ogni caso, il danneggiamento della colorazione delle armi dopo pochissimi utilizzi (non  parliamo di brunitura essendo queste, repliche per Softair), soprattutto nei punti dove la fondina fa “presa” sull'arma per trattenerla.
Nel nostro caso, dopo 3-4 utilizzi sul campo di gioco, entrambe le facce del carrello per gli ultimi 2 cm. si sono presentate con vistosi segni.

 The internal side in not finished and there's no weapon protection liner inside.

About that there are different opinions: some say that the liner could be damaged by the weapon and little parts could go through the weapon and make some malfunctions while some say that the internal liner is good to prevent weapon aesthetic damages.

We have to say that using this holster for airsoft games you will have not the "danger" of malfunction.

Due the absence of the protective internal liner, your weapon will have some scratches on the slide after a few times you will you it.

In our experience, after 3-4 times we used this holster on game field, our weapon has been scratched in both the sides. 
 

 I SISTEMI DI RITENZIONE

La fondina è una Level 2, quindi è dotata di due sistemi di ritenzione della pistola: il primo è affidato all'attenta regolazione, da parte dell'utilizzatore, delle due viti poste lateralmente, per allargare o stringere la larghezza della fondina e quindi la forza esercitata dalla fondina sulla pistola per trattenerla; il secondo è affidato al sistema di sgancio manuale posto sopra il cane.

 THE RETENTION SYSTEMS

This is a Level 2 holster so it has two retention systems: the first is made by the adjustable grip of the holster on the weapond (you can adjust that grip working on the two screws on the holste external side) and the second one is made by a manual safety lock/unlock system over the hammer.

 

 Il sistema di sgancio manuale è molto semplice ma abbastanza efficace.
Consta infatti in una paletta dura accostata alla fascia per il cinturone, alla quale è stato applicato un bottone a pressione femmina mentre, sul versante esterno, vi è una linguetta in gomma morbida preformata per rimanere aperta in posizione di riposo.
In definitiva, quando si va ad agganciare la lingua di gomma alla paletta rigida tramite il bottone a pressione, si esercita una piccola forza che “carica” la lingua: una volta spinta la paletta verso la gamba, si sgancia il bottone a pressione e la linguetta tende a tornare in posizione di riposo, aprendosi verso l'esterno come se fosse dotata di una molla.

Il sistema, per il mondo del Softair, funziona bene e durante il nostro lungo test non abbiamo mai avuto impedimenti all'estrazione da parte della linguetta in gomma.
La paletta rigida, però, come si può vedere in foto, a fondina indossata risulta compressa dalla fascia per il cinturone e sporadicamente, ma abbastanza spesso per entrare in una casistica, l'azionarla è risultato lento e macchinoso, cosa del tutto trascurabile nel gioco del SA quanto temibile nell'utilizzo reale.
Più impegnativo e meno rapido risulta invece reinserire la sicura manuale, come si può notare nel video sottostante.

 The manual unlock system is very easy but effective.

This is made by a stiff plastic lever with a female snap on the thigh side and by a moving rubber flap with a male snap (modeled to remain opened when disengaged) on the external side.

In the end, when you will lock the rubber flap on the plastic lever through the snap, you will "charge" the flap as a spring so, when you will unlock the snap, the flap will be automatically pushed away from the weapon hammer.

This system works well in the airsoft activities and during our tests we have had no extraction problems.

But the stiff lever, as you can see in the picture, when the holster is fitted on the thigh, will be pushed by the belt strap and it disturbs working on it to unlock the system. This have no meaning in the airsoft activities but could be a big problem in the real field use.

More difficult and less quickly is to re-activate the manual safety system, as you can see in the video below.

 

 Durante le prove abbiamo tentato di spostare la fondina più in basso sulla base,facendo in modo che il sistema di ritenzione della paletta non fosse più compresso dalla fascia per l'aggancio alla cintura, ma purtroppo questo si è rivelato impossibile data la conformazione della struttura.
Infatti, pur essendo la base dotata di vari fori (e potendone comunque creare di nuovi), lo spostare al fondina in altezza, in avanti o indietro risulta quasi impossibile.
Dalla sua ha però una naturale posizione neutra che in genera soddisfa gran parte degli utilizzatori.

Infine segnaliamo la possibilità di escludere il sistema di sgancio manuale, sfruttando unicamente il valido sistema di ritenzione “automatico”.

 During our tests we tried to move the holster lower on the base trying to move the stiff lever of the manual safety system away from the belt strap action but it's impossible due the support and holster structure.
In fact, even if the support has some holes (and anyway you could easily made more in the kydex), moving the holster up or down and forward or backward is almost impossible.

Anyway we have to say that in this position the holster is "neutral" and could satisfy the most of the users.

In the end we want to underline that you can exclude the manual safety system and use only the "automatic" retention system (grip on the weapon).

 LA BASE

La base è molto semplice, grezza e di gran lunga meno rifinita delle basi Safariland.
Si presenta predisposta per accogliere porta caricatori o altre utility, da fissare per mezzo di viti ai fori preesistenti.

 THE THIGH SUPPORT

The support is very simple, not much finished, a lot less the Safariland ones.

It allows to attach aftermarket pouches you can fix with screws.

 Il retro della base presenta il passaggio delle fasce per la gamba e il fissaggio per fascia per il cinturone, che utilizza le stesse viti con le quali la fondina si ancòra alla base.

 The back of the thihg support has the space for the thigh straps and for the strap for the duty or rigger belt. That strap uses the same screws that fix the holster on the support.

 Infine, un particolare che ci ha lasciati “dubbiosi”: le fasce cosciali, apparentemente due fasce qualunque, sono invece marchiate TacticalTailor.
Non sappiamo se questo sia frutto di qualche collaborazione oppure se sia unicamente un errore di qualche fornitore, resta il fatto che queste fasce donano alla fondina un grip e una stabilità veramente sopra la media, grazie anche agli inserti in gomma inseriti lungo tutta la fascia e al tratto di fascia “elastico” che consente una regolazione ottimale senza stringere eccessivamente la coscia.

 In the end, a particular that makes some questions: the thigh straps seem to be normal straps but they are TacticalTailor branded.

We don't know if there's some kind of cooperations between TacticalTailor or if it's a seller mystake but we can say that these straps have a very good grip and they give a lot of stability, thank also to the gripping rubber inserts they have. The straps have also an elastic zone that allows a very good fitting on your thigh.

 TEST SUL CAMPO

Dopo aver testato la fondina su giocate di durata inferiore alle 24h (nelle quali, in maniera personale, preferiamo non utilizzare fondine cosciali) possiamo affermare che è molto stabile (grazie anche alle fasce per le cosce dotate di inserti in gomma) e decisamente comoda, non avendo punti di pressione fastidiosi ma distribuendo uniformemente il suo peso.
Il sistema di sgancio manuale, molto rudimentale, potrebbe essere danneggiato da un utilizzo reale in ambito operativo data la sua struttura in gomma.
Lo stesso non credo rappresenti il “gold standard” dei sistemi di sgancio, difatti la Blade-Tech ha recentemente immesso sul mercato la nuova versione di questa fondina, dotata del sistema WRS.
Questo nuovo sistema di sgancio ad abbattimento dell'archetto, ricorda molto quello utilizzato dalla Safariland, discostandosi da questo per il fatto che, quello Safariland, necessita di uno sgancio del tutto manuale dovendo premere verso il basso e ruotare in avanti l'archetto, mentre quello Blade-Tech è completamente automatico essendo dotato di un pulsante che, una volta azionato, rilascia una molla precaricata facendo abbassare l'archetto.
Punto negativo di questa fondina è l'assenza di liner interno posto a protezione delle pistole utilizzate. Nei punti di maggior contatto e “presa” della fondina sulla pistola, questa graffia notevolmente le parti metalliche.

Il costo indicato dalla casa produttrice è di poco più di 100$ ma presso i rivenditori il prezzo scende di molto.

 

 Conclusions.

This is a Lev.2 Blade-tech Tactical Thigh Holster, with a very good grip and stability on the leg.
The finishes are not very accurate but enought for a tactical holster like this.
There's no internal liner so the  holster could damage the metal of the gun with it's automatic secure.
The lock-system is very easy but we think it could be damaged by a long and intensive real use.
This lock-system is the old one, while Blade-Tech has done a new system named WRS, who is an automatic push-to-unlock system.
In the end, this is a good holster with some little defects but very good for airsoft use and less for military use.
I think at this moment, buy this holster could be very advantageous because the price went down with the coming of the new Blade-tech holsters with the new lock-system WRS. 

The price shown on the Blade-Tech website is 100$ but searching on the web you can find it at a better price.
