Quando si crede di aver raggiunto il "massimo"...si scopre invece che molto c'era ancora da fare e ci ha pensato la Source con la sua linea di sistemi d'idratazione.

Grazie a Tactical Equipment, importatore ufficiale per l'Italia e rivenditore Source, analizziamo oggi il Tactical 3L hydration pack, forse il più versatile sistema della linea Source.

 

When you think to have reached the "maximum"...you will discover that a lot there was to do and Source thought about that with its hydration systems line.

Thanks to Tactical Equipment, official importer and dealer for Italy, today we will analyze the Tactical 3L hydration pack, maybe the most versatile hydration system of the Source line.

 

 

 

 

 La Source è una ditta israeliana attiva dal 1989 ma non molto conosciuta al grande pubblico. Oggi, però, grazie ad alcuni contratti con l' US Army, si è imposta sul mercato con soluzione veramente molto pratiche ed innovative.

 

Andiamo, quindi, ad analizzare il prodotto a nostro avviso più versatile, il Tactical 3L hydration pack, prodotto in Israele...il che ci colpisce molto data la scarsità di materiali "made in Israel" che arrivano negli armadi dei softgunners.

 

 The Source is an Israeli brand active since 1989 but it's not very known by the big public. But today, thank to some contracts with the US Army, the Source has became very known with its useful and innovative solutions.

 

So, let's go to analyze the Tactical 3L hydration pack, probably the most versatile Source product. It's made in Israel and it's a little "strange" due the little quantity of "made in Israel" products that arrive to the airsoft players.

 

 

 

 

 

 Dando una rapida occhiata ai materiali utilizzati si nota subito che la Source indica come "Tough abrasion resistant Nylon" il materiale utilizzato per il rivestimento esterno anche se a noi sembra una Cordura superiore ai 500 Denari (probabilmente un 1000), spalmata sul versante interno. I colori a disposizione sono attualmente il nero, coyote tan, multicam e verde OD.

 

Per la componentistica di "aggancio" sono stati scelti Fastex UTX Flex che vedremo in seguito nel dettaglio.

 

 The materials used by the Source is indicated as "Tough abrasion resistant Nylon" but we think Cordura superior than 500 denars (probably 1000 denars) spread in the innner side. The colour available are black, coyote tan, multicam and old greed OD.

 

The fastex are made by UTX Flex but we will se them next.

 

 

 

 

 Tutto l'interno è coibentato con uno strato di Polietilene (PE) da 5mm di spessore, rivestito da un liner chiaro di Nylon 70denari.

L'isolamento termico è degno di nota non solo contro il caldo (dato che il periodo dell'anno del test non ha permesso temperature superiori ai 10°) ma anche contro il freddo, riducendo il rischio che l'acqua nel reservoir ghiacci (senza entrare nel merito dell'utilità "o meno" di bere acqua a temperature molto basse durante il gioco).

 

 The inner side of the pack is insulated by a 5 mm Poliethylele (PE) liner, covered by a soft nylon 70 denars liner. 

The thermal insulate is very good not only against hot temperatures but also against cold ones ( unfortunately in the test period the max temperature has been 10°C - and at this moment we don't want to talk about drinking cold water during winter airsoft games).

 

 

 

 

 Fatte queste dovute presentazioni sui materiali, iniziamo a dare uno sguardo alla struttura esterna del Tactical 3L.

Partendo dall'alto troviamo un maniglia in nylon per trasportare o per appendere il pack. Le cuciture di questa sono veramente molto resistenti e solo tirando con molta forza si riescono ad intravedere i punti di cucitura.

Diciamo sin da subito, in modo da non doverci tornare successivamente, che la qualità delle cuciture e la precisione delle rifiniture sono davvero ottime.

 

 After these presentation about the material we will start talking about the external structure of the Tactical 3L.

Starting from the upper side we can find an heavy Cordura handle to carry and to hang the pack. The seams are very strong and only pulling hard you can see the seam inside.

We want to tell you now, to not repeat in the next part of the review, that the seams quality and the precision of the finishes are very high.

 Ai due angoli superiori troviamo i classici fori per l'uscita del tubo d'idratazione, ben cuciti e rifiniti ma nulla di nuovo.

 

 At the upper angle you will find the holes for the exit of the hydration tube, well sewn and finished but nothing new.

 

 

 

 

 

 Tra questi due fori troviamo la prima novità, ovvero, i due ganci superiori per l'attacco del pack al sistema M.O.L.L.E.

I fastex come detto sono UTX Flex, ruvidi al tatto. Questo punto è forse l'unico in cui le cuciture, se pur ben realizzate, forse non sono il massimo della sicurezza. Infatti, con una modica trazione è possibile evidenziare i punti di cucitura della fettuccia del fastex sul nylon esterno e, nonostante siano stati cuciti due punti della fettuccia - ricavando, così, un'asola "multiuso" - riteniamo che una cucitura a "Z" centrale non sarebbe stata un brutto investimento: avrebbe sì comportato la perdita dell'asola, facilmente vicariabile dall'aggiunta di qualche PALS, ma avrebbe reso sicuramente più resistente l'ancoraggio.

 

 Between the tube holes we can find the first news on this pack: the two fastexes to attach the hydration pack to M.O.L.L.E. systems.

The fastexes are made by UTX Flex and they're rough to the touch. Maybe this is the only point where the seams, even well done, are not the best about "safety": pulling a little the straps you can easily see the seam points and even if the straps are sewn in two points creating a useful pals, we think that a "Z" seam could better for that kind of use (attach the pack to the tactical vest).

 

 

 

 

 

 E' ovvio che, in riferimento a quanto detto sopra, non mi riferisco al peso del pack, anche se pieno (poco più di 3kg), ma del fatto che in ambiente operativo reale gli stress meccanici a cui potrebbe essere sottoposto potrebbero essere tali da strappare la cucitura, buona ma avente una base d'impianto a mio avviso troppo ridotta.

 

 It's obvious that what I wrote above is not about the weight of the hydration pack even if full loaded (a little more than 3kgs) but is about that I think that in real field the mechanical stesses could are very high and maybe could damage the seams...well done but with a too small attaching base.

 

 

 

 

 I fastex sono della giusta misura per passare agilmente sotto un PALS.

 

Leggermente più in basso e al centro troviamo la grossa bocca per l'inserimento dell'acqua nel reservoir (che, come vedremo in seguito, nei reservoir Source non rappresenta l'unica via d'accesso).

Molto simile a quello di altre marche, il grosso tappo a vite presenta un sistema di ritenzione tramite un "cordino", facilmente sostituibile in caso di danneggiamento, la cui procedura di sostituzione viene fornita in modo chiaro dalla Source.

 

 The fastexes have the right dimension to pass through the PALS.

 

A little below and in the middle you can find the big hole to fill the internal bladder (but as we will see next it's not the only way to fill the Source bladders).

Similar to other brands one, the big screwed cap has a cord retention you can easily replace thank to the good istruction on the Source website.

 

 

 

 

 La maniglia verticale consente l'impugnatura del pack al fine di inserirlo e mantenerlo sotto lo sbocco della sorgente d'acqua al fine di riempire il reservoir. La produra risulta molto comoda .

 

 The vertical handle allows to grid the pack to fill the bladder under a water flow and it is very useful.

 

 

 

 

 Non ci soffermeremo nuovamente sui fastex inferiori per i quali vale, in tutto e per tutto, quanto già affermato per quelli superiori. Invece, al centro della parte bassa, troviamo il sistema con D-Ring per appendere a scolare e/o asciugare il pack senza la necessità di estrarre il reservoir, grazie alla sua apertura sull'alto...che vedremo fra poco nel dettaglio.

 

 We will not talk about the lower side Fastex again that are just alike the upper side ones. But, in the center of the lower side we can find a D-ring system you can use to hang the pack to draining and dry the bladder without putting it out from the pack...thank to its upper aperture we will see next.

 

 

 

 

 Anteriormente a destra nelle foto, vi è una lunga zip, protetta da un lembo di Cordura con imbottutura in PE, che consente l'accesso al vano interno dela pack e quindi al reservoir.

Durante i test abbiamo potuto saggiare la grande utilità di questa zip e la grande capacità di carico del Tactical 3L: come è possibile vedere in foto, nonostante il reservoir fosse completamente pieno, nel pack è possibile inserire ancora una lattina - di cui credo sia semplice immagina la marca - nel formato "allungato". Questa possibilità risulta particolarmente utile in ambito reale per portare, per esempio, accessori e/o strumenti per la purificazione dell'acqua.

 

 In the frontal right side in the picture you can see a long zipper, covered by a Cordura flap and insulated with PE, that allows the access to the internal zone of the pack so you can have access to the bladder.

During our tests we tested the useful of that zipper and the big storage capability of the Tactical 3L: as you can see in the picture, even if the bladder was full loaded there were the space to store a long type can - of a famous brand as you can image. This is very useful in real field to store accessories and tools to purify the water for example.

 

 

 

 

 Per quanto concerne le modalità di aggancio e trasporto del pack, ci sono 3 sistemi. Il primo prevede il trasporto "a zaino" tramite due spallacci, dotati di sternum strap e velcri per bloccare il tubo sullo spallaccio. Sono presenti anche alcuni passanti dove è possibile assicurare sistemi GPS o altro.

 

 About tha way to carry the pack, there are 3 systems: the first allows you to carry it as a backpack thank the shoulders with sternum-strap and velcro straps to lock the tube on the shoulders. There are also some cordura loops to secure tools like GPS and more.

 

 

 

 

 

 Il secondo metodo di trasporto prevede l'aggancio al sistema M.OL.L.E.  tramite i fastex UTX flex: le fettucce dei fastex sono lunghe abbastanza da consentire l'aggancio anche in situazioni difficili sui vest.

Per utilizzare questo metodo è necessario "nascondere" gli spallacci dentro l'apposita tasca.

Infine il pack può essere trasportato come "contenitore" all'interno di uno zaino più grande.

 

 The second system allows to attach the pack to a tactical vest through the M.O.L.L.E. system thank to the fastexes: the fastexes straps are long enough to engage the pack to the vests also in difficult conditions.

To use this system you need to "hide" the shoulders inside their appopriate pouch.

In the end you can carry your hydration pack as a "container" inside a bigger backpack.

 

 

 

 

 Desideriamo soffermarci sulll'apertura posteriore: verso il basso si ha la grossa tasca dove inserire gli spallacci, che viene chiusa tramite un pezzo di Velcro mentre verso l'alto, questa apertura nasconde una zip (protetta da una copertura in Cordura) che da accesso alla parte superiore, apribile, del reservoir, consentendo operazioni di riempimento/svuotamento/pulizia senza la necessità di smontare tutto il sistema.

 

 I want to underline the back pouch: in the lower side of the aperture there's the big pouch to hide the shoulders that is closed by a little piece of Velcro while the upper side of the aperture hides a zipper (protected by a Cordura flap) that allows the access to the upper opening side of the bladder so you can have an access to the internal side of it without disassemble all the system so you can fill/empty/clean the bladder.

 La vescica è costruita in 3 strati di Polietilene "Glass like" con integrati i sistemi "taste free" system che permette di mantenere inalterato il gusto dell'acqua senza sapore di plastica e il Grunge-Guard system in grado di inibire la crescita batterica all'interno della sacca e del tubo (questo sistema è autorizzato dalla FDA - Food and Drug Administration - ente americano per il controllo del cibo e dei farmaci). 

 

Vera novità della sacca è la possibilità di aprirla completamente nella sua parte alta, permettendo un riempimento ma, soprattutto, un lavaggio ed asciugatura estramamente rapidi e comodi.

Per aprire la parte superiore ed accedere all'interno della sacca è sufficiente sfilare il blocco, assicurato alla stessa tramite un cordino.

Con questo sistema diventano, di fatto, inutili i vari sistemi a "stampella" da inserire all'interno delle sacce per poterle appendere ad asciugare: nel giro di poche ore la sacca così aperta sarà completamente asciutta, anche nelle parti più ostiche come i bordi interni delle parti pressofuse sul lato inferiore, basta avere qualche accortezza nell'allargare le due facce della sacca.

 

 The bladder is made by 3 layers of polyethylene "Glass like" with integrated the "taste free" system (that maintanins unaltered the tasto of water) and the Grunge-guard system (that suppress the bacterial growth in the bladder and tube and this system is FDA  - Food and Drug Administration - approved).

 

The real news about the bladder is the possibility of opening it in the upper side allowing to fill, to clean and to dry it very fast.

To open it and have access to the internal of the bladder you need to take off the black lock, secured by a thin lanyard.

With this system you will not need the system used to suspend the bladder to dry it: opening the bladder in this way you could dry it in a short time even in the most difficult parts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Il bocchettone per il riempimento ha una forma comune e si avvale di un tappo a vite nero con ritenzione alla ghiera, già visto ad inizio recensione.

 

Sul fondo è presente la valvola SQC ad aggancio rapido: sarà sufficiente premere il tasto ed astrarre il tubo dalla valvola. Il connettore sul tubo è dotato di guarnizione di tenuta o-ring e in questo modo il vero punto di raccordo delle due parti risulta protetto dagli agenti esterni quali polvere o sabbia.

 

 The big hole to fill the bladder have a big black screwed cap, but it's very common.

 

In the lower side there's the SQC valve with quick attach: you will have only to push the button and take off the valve. The connector on the tube has an o-ring so this system is protected by dust or sand.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Stesso sistema è utilizzato per agganciare l'altra estremità del tubo alla valvola per l'assunzione dell'acqua e vi è la possibilità di agganciare rapidamente accessori supplementari quali filtri per l'acqua.

 

 The same system is used to attach the tube to the drinking valve and you can use it to attach tools for purify the water.

 

 

 

 

 La valvola è di tipo angolare a 90° ed è dotata di una di doppio sistema di chiusura: estraendo il boccaglio è possibile bere mentre premendolo completamente è possibile bloccare il sistema; è anche possibile inserire una "sicura" che blocca completamente il sistema impedendo l'estrazione del boccaglio, ruotando con il boccaglio in senso orario quando completamente inserito.

 

 The drinking valve has a 90° angle and has two lock systems: pulling out the mouth piece you can drink while if you push it the system will be closed; you can also to secure lo lock turning clockwise the mouth piece locking the pulling out of it.

 

 

 

 

 Da sottolineare il fatto che la parte di valvola presente all'estremità libera del tubo, deputata all'aggancio della valvola angolare, presenta un sistema che, a valvola angolare rimossa, blocca automaticamente la fuoriuscita dell'acqua dal tubo...un sistema di sicurezza ulteriore che ci fa capire l'attenzione con cui queste sacche sono state concepite.

 

 We want to underline the the valve for the mouth piece of the tube has a system that lock the water if the mouth piece valce is removed...this is another secure system that shows the attention of Source for this equipment.

 

 

 

 

 Il tubo di raccordo, infine, risulta essere più corto di altri di marche diverse, grazie alla valvola angolare che consente un'assunzione d'acqua più comoda ed anche qui è presente il sistema d'inibizione della crescita batterica.

Il tubo è inoltre ricoperto da uno strato d'isolante in tinta che isola dal caldo/freddo sia dai raggi UV.

 

 The tube is shorter than the other brands one thank to the angular valve that allows to comfortably drink.

The tube is also covered by an insulating system that protects by hot/cold even by UV ray. 

 

 Test sul campo

Il test sul campo si è svolto sia agganciato ad un plate carrier LBT 6094A sia come zaino.

Il nuovo sistema di aggancio tramite Fastex è molto comodo e permette di agganciare/sganciare il sistema in un attimo: questo risulta particolarmente utile quando si debba riempire la sacca in ambiente operativo.

Utilizzato come zaino risulta comodo al pari di altri "colleghi" mentre il meglio ritengo emerga nel momento della "manutenzione": al giocatore di softair ,che non utilizza la sacca d'idratazione continuativamente per lunghi periodi, come può avvenire per il militare, risulta particolarmente importante poter svuotare, asciugare ed eventualmente pulire rapidamente la sacca per poterla riporre sino alla successiva domenica, come minimo. La sacca in questione da il meglio di se in queste condizioni permettendo una manutenzione rapidissima ed una velocità di gestione veramente molto alta.

L'apertura superiore, alla quale si può accedere anche senza rimuovere la sacca dallo zainetto, è il punto di forza del sistema che in un attimo può essere aperto ed ispezionato, pulito, asciugato, riempito...

Il Tactical 3L hydration pack, prodotto dalla Source, risulta essere un sistema per l'idratazione innovativo ma, soprattutto, versatile e veloce nella gestione, a casa come sul campo; tecnologico ed affidabile come richiesto dall'US Army.

I materiali utilizzati sono di prima scelta, così come le soluzioni adottate per la sacca che non altera minimamente le proprietà organolettiche dell'acqua, come purtroppo avviene con le sacche economiche.

L'uso durante i test è stato di circa due mesi durante il periodo invernale e questo non ci ha permesso di mettere alla prova le capacità antibatteriche che d'estate avrebbero potuto fare la differenza rispetto ad altri competitor.

L'assunzione dell'acqua tramite il boccaglio è veloce e comoda ma, soprattutto, sicura grazie al sistema di blocco della valvola (evitando così di perdere acqua) e al cappuccio di protezione che eviterà di riempirci la bocca di sabbia o polvere.

Gli unici suggerimenti che mi sento di fare alla Source sono quelli di inserire alcune fila di PALS per il sistema M.O.L.L.E. per far si che possano essere agganciate tasche supplementari sul pack e di apporre un piccolo pannello di Velcro per poter apporre delle ID patch.

Un plauso alla Source per l'ottima sezione di manuali video e cartacei scaricabili e visionabili sul suo sito internet. 

Un prodotto ben riuscito con una progettazione di alto livello alle spalle.

Nota: i possessori di vecchi zainetti per l'idratazione Arktis, per i quali non sono più disponibili le sacche originali di ricambio possono efficacemente utilizzare questa sacca Source che risulta compatibile. Il prezzo della sola sacca si attesta a 34€ sempre presso Tactical Equipment.

 

 Test on field.

The test on field has been done with the Tactical 3L used as a backpack and attached on a LBT 6094A.

The new attaching system by Fastex is very useful and allows to attach/detach the pack on/from M.O.L.L.E. system: this is very useful to re-fill the bladder in real field.

Used as a pack is confortable like other brands hydration systems while I think that it's a lot better about the "maintenance": the airsoft player doesn't use the hydration system every day as a soldier, so he need to empty, clean and dry quickly the bladder to put away it since the next sunday. This bladder is the best to do those operations allowing to maintan and manage it very quickly.

The upper opening, that you can use without removing the bladder from the pack, is the strong point of this system that could be easily opened, controlled, cleaned, dry, filled it...

The Tactical 3L by Source is a innovative and versatile hydration system, easy to manage at home as on field; technologic and reliable as request by US Army. 

The materials used are very good as the solutions used on this bladder that don't change the water taste while the low-cost ones give to water "strange" taste.

The test lasts 2 months during winter period so we could not test it in warm period and so we could not test the anti-bacterial system as in summer period. 

To drink the water is quick, easy and safety thank to the lock system of the valve (to prevent water lost) and to the protection cover that will protect the valve from sand and dust.  

The only suggests I could give to Source are to add some PALS for M.O.L..L.E. system on the back od the pack to allow the attachment of other pouches and to add a small hook-and-loop panel to attach ID patch.

I want to congratulate with Source for the very good video and paper instructions on their website.
