 Presentazione

ESS è un'affermata azienda americana, che si pone tra i produttori leaders nella produzione di dispositivi di sicurezza per gli ambiti militare, pubblica sicurezza e soccorso.
Tra i vari modelli di occhiali e maschere, l'azienda produttrice ci ha inviato per la recensione questo nuovo modello 5B.

 Presentation

ESS is a well-established American company, leader in security goggles and sunglasses for military, public safety and rescue.
Among the various models of glasses and masks, the company sent us to review this new "5B" model.
 

 Il prodotto

Gli ESS 5B sono occhiali protettivi dalla linea accattivante e dal profilo estremamente basso per essere indossati sotto elmetti e cuffie senza interferire o creare fastidi.

Il design è di tipo full-frame, ovvero con le lenti completamente incorniciate dalla montatura.
Le lenti, balistiche, sono conformi alle specifiche U.S. MIL SPEC MIL-PRF-31013 ed ANSI Z87.1-2010; filtrano il 100% delle radiazioni UVA ed UVB.

ESS offre montature nei colori nero e grigio e lenti nelle versioni "Polarized Mirrored Gray" (al 9% di trasmissione luminosa), "Mirrored Gray" (12%), "Smoke Gray" (15%) e "Mirrored Copper" (23%).

 The product

The ESS 5B sunglasses is a winning design and the extremely low profile is perfect to be worn under helmets and headphones without interfering or creating nuisance.
The design is full-frame, so lenses are completely framed by the lens mount.
The lenses are ballistic and conform to MIL SPEC U.S. specifications MIL-PRF-31013 and ANSI Z87.1-2010; filter out 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
ESS offers frames in black and gray and lenses in "Polarized Mirrored Gray" (9% light transmission), "Gray Mirrored" (12%), "Smoke Gray" (15%) and "Mirrored Copper" (23 %).

 Osservando il prodotto nel dettaglio risaltano rispetto ad altri prodotti analoghi:

L'occhiale è consegnato in una confezione di cartone ed accompagnato da una custodia rigida, una morbida in microfibra da utilizzare anche per la pulizia delle lenti...

...e da un curioso cartellino che prescrive di non utilizzare questo occhiale come dispositivo di protezione durante la pratica del softair.

 The frame is delivered in a cardboard box and accompanied by a hard case, a soft microfiber bag (to be used also for lens cleaning) and a curious label prescribing glasses do not be used as a protective device during airsoft practice.

Il prezzo dichiarato sul sito del produttore va dai 95,00$ della versione con lente "Smoke Gray" ai 135,00 $ per la versione con lente "Polarized Mirrored Gray".

 "Remember 9.11"

Questo occhiale dispone di una versione limitata "Remember 9.11" appartente al lodevole progetto di ESS di devolvere il 25% del fatturato incassato con questa edizione alla Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, che sostiene i feriti in combattimento, le famiglie degli agenti di pubblica sicurezza deceduti in servizio e i Vigili del Fuoco americani rimasti vittime di ustioni durante il servizio.

Nella versione "Remember 9.11" l'occhiale, disponibile con montatura nera o bianca, dispone di una specifica serigrafia al laser sulla lente sinistra, di una soft-bag con la grafica della bandiera USA ed un adesivo ESS/USA.

This eyewear features a limited version "Remember 9.11", the ESS laudable project to donate 25% of the revenues collected with this edition to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which provides hope and promotes healing by building customized homes for severely-wounded combat veterans, assisting the families of fallen public safety officers, and helping firefighters recover in burn centers nationwide.

In the "Remember 9.11" eyewear, available in white or black frame, has a unique screen laser printing on the left lens, a soft-bag with U.S. flag graphics and a ESS U.S. Flag Sticker.

 La prova sul campo

Il regolamento dell'associazione a cui appartengo non permette di utilizzare occhiali "aperti" durante il gioco (e pure ESS specifica di non farlo con il "curioso cartellino" già illustrato), ho pertanto testato gli occhiali:

• nelle pause di gioco;
• in varie attività outdoor sia a piedi, in bicicletta ed in snowboard;
• durante la vita quotidiana.

Complessivamente sono soddisfatto dell'occhiale. 
Sebbene sia abituato a lenti polarizzate di un differente produttore, mentre il campione per la recensione monta lenti "Smoke Gray" (e la differenza si sente), l'occhiale garantisce un'eccellente filtraggio anche in situazioni "difficili" come le innevate piste da sci dell'alta montagna.
La visibilità è eccellente e la vestibilità pure.
Non ho riscontrato problemi di fogging nemmeno durante attività impegnative o umidità dell'aria elevata.
Rispetto ad altri prodotti testati è leggermente più avvolgente e protettivo all'altezza delle tempie, il che per un occhiale protettivo è sicuramente un bene.

 Field test

My team's rules deny me to "open" glasses during airsoft matches (and does ESS with "curious card" already set), then I tested this glasses:

• between matches;
• in various outdoor activities on foot, by bike and snowboarding;
• during daily life.

Overall I am very pleased with the glasses.
Although I'm used to wear polarized lenses, while the sample for the review mount "Smoke Gray" lenses (and the difference is noticeable), this glasses provides excellent filtering even in "difficult" situations as the snowy slopes of the mountains is.
Visibility is excellent and the fit as well.
I haven't encountered fogging problems even during strenuous activities, or high humidity.
Compared to other products, this one is slightly more enveloping and protective at the temples, and for a protective eyewear that is definitely a good thing.

 Considerazioni finali

Gli occhiali 5B sono sicuramente un ottimo prodotto, in linea con lo stile di ESS.

E' evidente lo sforzo di progettazione e realizzazione che ha indubbiamente portato a risultati eccellenti, peccato solo di non aver potuto provare la versione polarizzata per saggiarne le qualità.
Di rilievo pure l'attenzione di ESS al nostro gioco e la scelta di evidenziare l'inadeguatezza dell'occhiale, seppur balistico, a proteggere dai pallini softair; decisione perlatro in linea con la scelta di ESS di realizzare una specifica linea di prodotti dedicati al SA.

 Final cons.

5B sunglasses are definitely a great product, in line with the style of ESS.
The effort to design and construction quality has undoubtedly led to excellent results; my only sin was not to be able to test the polarized version to see lenses quality.
As well, I found significant the attention to our game by ESS and the choice to highlight the inadequacy of glasses, although ballistic, protect against airsoft pellets, decision in line with the choice of ESS to produce a specific product line dedicated to airsoft.
