Sempre più utilizzati dalle special forces di tutto il mondo e quindi dai softgunners, ecco un nuovo test di un'altra scarpa tecnica, la ASOLO FLAME GTX.

Increasingly used by special forces around the world and so by the airsoft players, here's a new test about technical shoes, the ASOLO FLAME GTX.

Il softgunner, come ogni altra persona che frequenti spesso la montagna per i più svariati motivi, ha bisogno di una scarpa che dia un’adeguata protezione e, allo stesso tempo, un certo comfort per svolgere in sicurezza e comodità le sue attività.

E' anche per questo motivo che ho voluto testare il modello ASOLO FLAME in colorazione “Cortex / Tundra” (un bel marrone scuro).

La ditta Asolo non ha bisogno di grandi presentazioni, ormai, specialmente nell’ambiente softair ed appassionati di militaria moderna. Le “vecchie” ASOLO FSN 95 GTX sono ben conosciute e rinomate, hanno già abbondantemente dato prova si sé sul campo e sono già state testate qui su ASC.

Quindi, andrò subito al sodo parlando della scarpa in questione.

Softgunners, just like any other people that go often into the mountains for any reason, need shoes that give a good protection and, at the same time, the comfort to do their activity in safety and easiness.

So, also for this reason I decided to try out the new ASOLO FLAME in “Cortex / Tundra” color, (kind of dark brown).

Asolo doesn’t need presentation, now by now, expecially if we’re talking to softgunners and modern militaria lovers The “old” ASOLO FSN 95 GTX are well know and famous, they have proved themselves on the field and we have just tested them.

So, let's go to talk about these shoes.

LA SCARPA

La scarpa si presenta veramente solida e massiccia; suola in Vibram, EVA Matrix, comune a svariati nuovi modelli ASOLO, corpo in pelle di circa 1,6 – 1,8mm, fodera in GoreTex che garantisce traspirabilità ed impermeabilità e punta rinforzata in gomma.

THE SHOES

The shoes seem really solid and sturdy: Vibram soil, EVA Matrix, common to many other ASOLO new models, body in leather of about 1,6 - 1,8mm of thickness, internal GoreTex layer that guarantees breathily and impermeability and hard rubber reinforcement on the tip.

Nonostante la rigidità esterna, la calzata è piuttosto comoda sin da subito: si percepisce una certa rigidità ma allo stesso tempo risulta confortevole.

Nonostante questo, sono sempre della filosofia che gli scarponi nuovi hanno sempre bisogno di un po’ di rodaggio.

Può sembrare pesante a primo impatto, ma alla fine è risultata più leggera dello scarpone che andava a sostituire (AKU trekker boots).

Even if it appears to be pretty rigid, the foot fits in it perfectly, some hardness is perceptible but at the same time it feels comfortable.

Anyway, I think that new trekking (or better, hiking…) shoes need to be used and breaked a little bit before they show their best wear comfort.

It may seems heavy at a first sight, but it shows to be lighter than the shoe it’s going to replace, a pair of AKU trekker boots.

LE PROVE

Il primo giorno ho avuto modo di testarle nella neve.

L’isolamento termico è discreto, ma nulla di eccezionale; un calzino adeguato è raccomandato, specialmente se la temperatura scende di molto sotto lo zero (ai test, eravamo solo a -6/-7 °C), e dopo un’oretta stando praticamente fermi un po’ di freddo lo si sente. Sicuramente, quando ci si tiene in movimento la situazione cambia.

THE TESTS

The first day I’ve tested the shoes in a snowy terrain.

Thermal insulation is moderate, but nothing exceptional; I recommend good thermal socks, especially if temperature going deeply under 0°C (during the test, it was only -6/-7 °C), and after an hour standing in the snow, well, you feel your feet cold! For sure, moving helps a lot.

Una nota sulla punta in gomma, questa è la parte che si raffredda di più, anche quando tutto il piede ha un certo comfort termico, le dita saranno comunque fredde. L’impermeabilità è ovviamente totale, cosa che, secondo me, è requisito minimo ed indispensabile per una scarpa di questo tipo.

Just a note about the rubber reinforcement on the tip: this is the coldest zone of the shoes and even when the temperature on the whole foot seems comfortable, the fingertips will be cold. The waterproof is complete, but I think that this feature is a basic requirement for shoes like these.

Quanto al grip della suola, beh, finchè siamo con 30 cm di neve non c’è nessun problema con la maggior parte di scarponi sul mercato, ma dove la neve se ne è un po’ andata, lasciando spazio a acqua e fango, la suola Evo Matrix da’ il meglio di sé. Il rostro centrale, che in foto vedete appena sotto la scritta “vibram” sulla suola, è un vero freno per quando affrontiamo discese fangose e scivolose in genere.

About the grip of the sole, well, until we are over 30cm (12 inches) of snow, there is no problem as the most boots on sell. But where the snow is fading away, and we meet water and mud, we can appreciate the EVO Matrix soil. The central beak, visible in the photo of the bottom, a little lower than the “Vibram” marks in yellow, is a useful break when we are facing difficult muddy descents or slippery surfaces in general.

Nonostante lo scarpone sia basso, il piede mi è rimasto asciutto anche dentro a 40/50 cm di neve; questo grazie all’uso di pantalone in goretex che coprivano lo scarpone. Con la neve probabilmente già un pantalone in cotone basterebbe, ma alla lunga si inumidirebbe al punto da far filtrare l’acqua anche un po’ all’interno, all’altezza della caviglia. Mi permetto di consigliare ghette o pantaloni in goretex per avere la certezza di restare all’asciutto: certamente infilare il pantalone nello scarpone non è una delle cose più sagge, sia per la neve che per lo sporco in genere. Anche lo stesso scarpone, di disegno basso, non è ideale per essere indossato col pantalone all’interno.

Even if the shoes have a low profile, foots was dry after walking in 40/50 cm (16-20 inches) of snow. This, thanks to a pair of goretex pants that covered the boots. With snow, maybe cotton pants should be enough, but after some time it gets so wet that it allows water and humidity to enter from the top, at the ankle. I recommend gaiters or goretex pants to keep your feet warm and dry.

In my opinion, putting pants into the boot is not so wise both for snow and for dust. I also think that the boots are too short to be used with pants inside.

Dopo la passeggiata con la neve, è arrivata anche la giocata.

Le Asolo Flame GTX sono comode, nonostante fosse solo la seconda uscita. Alla fine di 5 orette a fare saliscendi, percorsi su fango e foglie bagnate, neve, etc, nessun segno di affaticamento del piede, né sensazione di fastidio. All’attraversamento di un corso d’acqua di un 15/20cm nessuna infiltrazione attraverso la scarpa (e la domenica, sempre con -7°C circa, avere i piedi bagnati significa fare i bagagli, se si vuole tornare alla vita normale lunedì!).

After a walk in the snow, it cames the day for some games.

The Asolo Flame GTX proved to be very comfortable, even if it was only the second day I was using them. After 5 hours of up-hill and downhill, walking on mud, wet leaves, snow, etc, I didn’t report any problem at my feet, nor annoying feelings. When crossing a little river (we’re talking about 15-20cm of water, less than 10 inches) the feets were completely dry. Having your feet wet, when it’s -7°C, means that you have to pack your weapon and go home, if you are willing to go to work next Monday!

Tornando un secondo sul “grip” della scarpa, abbiamo parlato di neve, fango, foglie…ma talvolta quando giochiamo ci capitano anche ambienti urbani: catrame, cemento, ceramiche, tutto un altro mondo.

Il grip su ceramiche bagnate (semplici pavimenti piastrellati…) è sufficiente per muoversi in sicurezza. La suola umida su pavimento asciutto invece non da noie.

Ci si rende comunque conto che non è la scarpa “ideale” per questi posti: la suola dura e rigida diventa un po’ troppo “rumorosa”, muoversi in silenzio è meno semplice che con calzature dalla suola più morbida, basta un sassolino, del cemento scrostato, vetro, un pezzo di mattone o coppo e lo frantumeremo, non abbiamo il “tatto” per evitare questi rumori. Una suola più morbida e sottile, oltre a limitare il rumore stesso, ci permette di renderci conto su cosa stiamo mettendo i piedi.

Now, let’s talk a litte bit more about the grip of the shoes. We’ve talked about snow, mud, leaves but also happens to play in urban environments: asphalt, concrete, ceramics, it’s all another world.

Grip over wet ceramics is enough to move in safety conditions. Wet sole on dry surfaces gives no problems.

We realize that the Flame gtx are not designed for these environment: the hard rigid sole is too “noisy”, moving while trying to be stealth is harder, if we compare these with some other boots with a softer sole. Walking on concrete, little rocks, glass, pieces of bricks, we will crush everything, we don’t have the touch to understand what’s under our feet. A softer and thinner sole would limit the noise itself, and would give us a better feeling of what are we walking on.

Un'altra nota “contro” riscontrata nell'uso in ambiente urbano, è una bassa sensazione di stabilità sulle classiche scalette metalliche, rispetto ad una scarpa tradizionale. Mi sento di evidenziare questa cosa, anche banale, perché l’ho percepita in modo importante.

Intendo dire che mai mi sentirei di poter correre su e giù per scalette di questo tipo con le Asolo Flame, mentre mi verrebbe naturale con un paio di comuni scarpe da ginnastica. Ho imputato questa mia sensazione alla suola piuttosto alta sul tallone che mi dato spesso una sensazione di scivolamento.

In definitiva, in urbano, con molti ostacoli, oggetti a terra ed altro, se da un lato siamo più protetti, dall’altro il calo di agilità è notevole.

Another thing, in urban environment: I felt like “unbalanced” when climbing the classic industrial iron stairs; this note may seem silly, but I really had that sensation. I mean, I’ll never run or jump up and down a stair like that with my Asolo Flame, while I would with a common pair of tennis shoes. In my opinion, this happen due to the thick soil on the heel that often gave me a sliding feeling.

So, in urban environment, where we can find many objects and obstacles on the floor, on one side, we are well protected, on the other the “drop” of agility is high.

Un appunto sulla rigidità della parte anteriore della scarpa: camminare sulle punte è un po’ fastidioso. La punta della suola è dura e rigida, questa cosa abbinata alla rigidità del corpo superiore, dove c’è anche il rinforzo in gomma, peggiora la situazione. Ho trovato difficile, per così dire, il camminare all’indietro, il che risulta una sensazione completamente “innaturale”, anche solo per pochi metri.

La caviglia invece non risente affatto di questa “rigidità”; infatti, nonostante sia ben avvolta e protetta, non ha fatiche o attriti da contrastare.

Again, a note on the shoes tips with the rubber: walking on your tips will be pretty annoying. The sole tip is too rigid, and the rubber reinforcement doesn’t help at all. I have had some problems walking backwards, I mean, you don’t feel “natural” at all, even if you move only for few meters.

On the other side, the ankle is well closed and protected, without having any troubles or rubbings.

La misura presa era ottimale sul mio piede, non ho avuto problemi sulla regolazione dei lacci come è emerso nei test sul campo delle FSN95; questa cosa, purtroppo, temo sia un po’ troppo personale per generalizzarla in una recensione, sta un po’ all’utilizzatore regolare il laccio per soddisfare i suoi bisogni.

The size of the Flame is perfect for my feet so I have not the adjusting problems you can read about in the ASOLO FSN95 GTX test. In any case I think it's a very personal situation and I can't talk in general for all the future users.

Ora passerei ad alcuni pregi e difetti minori degli scarponi, e alle possibili soluzioni ai secondi.

Primo fra tutti: i lacci.

Molto probabilmente perché ancora nuovi e duri, tendono a slacciarsi molto facilmente dopo un paio d’ore di uso. Difatti allacciandoli “normalmente”, i lacci si posizionano ad solo un centimetro dal margine superiore della linguetta e, non appena il nodo si dovesse allentare, camminando il laccio scivolerà lì, fuoriuscendo poi dai sui ganci. La soluzione, come mi ha consigliato Seal1, è quella di incrociarli ai ganci in cima alla scarpa, per poi chiuderli e legarli al gancio sotto. La tenuta sulla caviglia è sempre ottima, e il nodo dura a lungo, senza che si allentino i lacci.

Rigidità: protezione del piede o agilità? Senz’ombra di dubbio tra le due cose, la Asolo ha scelto la protezione per le sue FLAME GTX. Come già detto, nessun problema da evidenziare nell'uso boschivo o su sentieri, mentre incontreremo qualche difficoltà in contesto urbano.

Odori: in fondo, a casa dobbiamo pur toglierli! Non ho riscontrato grossi problemi di odori al momento di toglierli, anche dopo 10 ore di utilizzo senza mai levarli. Segno di una buona traspirazione, anche con una calza tecnica pesante.

Piede un po’ umido con umidità esterna del 100% (pioggia), sicuramente meno della maglietta che indossavo. Insomma, nulla di strano.

Now I’ll analyze some minor details, good and bad, and the possible solutions for the second ones.

First of all, the laces.

They seem to loose very easily, after a couple of hours. In fact, if we tie them “normally”, we see that there is just a centimeter (less than ½ inch) of tab and when the laces loose a little bit, they slide away from the hooks. The solution, as suggested by Seal1, is to cross them first at the top hooks, then use the second ones and tie the laces here. It’ll still close the ankle very well and won’t loose anymore.

Rigidity: protection or agility? Asolo choosed the first for sure. As we said, no troubles in mountain paths and grounds, some problems in urban environment.

Smell: you know, we still have to take them off at home! I don’t have to report any smell problems, even after 10 hours of use, without taking them off. It should means they have a good breathability, even with winter socks.

Feet may be a little humid, when external humidity reaches 100% (rain), but for sure less than the t-shirt we eventually wear…In the end, nothing strange.

CONCLUSIONI

Personalmente, mi ritengo più che soddisfatto di questo scarpone, ma solo un test sulla lunga distanza potrà dare la conferma definitiva a questo mia prova.

Non è certamente la scarpa ideale per l’ambiente urbano quanto a comfort, ma sicuramente ci terrà i piedi al sicuro.
