Il marchio SOCOM GEAR si è presentato sul mercato delle repliche ASG da poco tempo: collegato a MADBULL, spesso offre versioni enhanced dei prodotti WE TECH, corredandole con accessori interessanti.
Alcuni mesi orsono, SOCOM GEAR ha annunciato la produzione di un replica GBB della Beretta M9, precisando che per questo modello sarebbero stati disponibili anche caricatori adatti alle bombolette di CO2 che non ne avrebbero alterato le dimensioni rispetto all’originale.
Quando ne ho avuto occasione e possibilità, ho quindi ordinato la loro riproduzione della Beretta M9, contando di ricevere un prodotto di fascia medio alta, e prendendo a riferimento l’analoga riproduzione offerta da Tokio Marui.

The SOCOM GEAR brand recently comes on the ASG replicas market: connected to Madbull, often offering enhanced versions of WE TECH products, having aside quite interesting accessories.
A few months ago, SOCOM GEAR announced the production of a GBB Beretta M9 replica, indicating that this model would be available also with CO2 magazines,  that would not have altered the original size.
When I have had both opportunity and possibility, I ordered the reproduction of the Beretta M9, expecting to receive a medium-high product, with reference to the similar reproduction offered by Tokyo Marui.
 

La SG M9 è fornita in una scatola di cartone, che ha incollata sul coperchio un’etichetta a colori con qualche indicazione ad alcune immagini di dettaglio del contenuto.
L’aspetto mi pare decisamente scarno, e tuttavia sono restio a giudicare il gusto di una caramella dal colore della carta che l’avvolge…
All’interno trovo la replica ed il suo manuale, adagiati su un supporto sagomato di polistirolo ricoperto da un pannetto nero.
Nel più classico stile WE TECH, nessun altro accessorio li accompagna; non amo i gadgets, e neppure la miriade di volantini con avvertenze e cataloghi che, ad esempio, sono costanti nelle scatole Marui, ma almeno uno scovolino l’avrei gradito…
Sotto il profilo funzionale, la confezione svolge bene il suo scopo primario: proteggere il contenuto da urti e danni.
Il manuale è di buona qualità, redatto in più lingue, stampato a colori ed abbastanza approfondito.

SG M9 is supplied in a cardboard box that has on the cover a color label glued on, with some indication and detailed images of the contents.
The look seems very meager, yet I am reluctant to judge the taste of a candy by colored paper that wraps it...
Inside there are the replica and its manual, resting on a polystyrene shaped support, covered by a black cloth.
In a WE TECH classic style, no other accessory accompanies them; I do not love gadgets, and even the myriad of warnings flyers and catalogs that, for example, are constant in the boxes Marui, but I would have liked at least one cleaning rod ...
In functional terms, the package performs well its primary purpose: to protect the contents from shock and damage.
The manual it is of good quality, written in multiple languages, printed in color and quite detailed.
 

La M9 di SOCOM GEAR è full metal; a parte alcuni componenti minori e le guancette, impugnandola lo si percepisce per bene.
La sagoma ed i dettagli rispecchiano quelli dell’arma vera; a prima vista, colpiscono le guancette integrali in materiale gommoso, ben differenti da quelle originali.
La qualità di fusione delle parti metalliche è buona; i dettagli sono netti, le superfici non presentano ritiri, e le scritte sono incise in modo preciso, senza ricorrere al laser. Non rilevo linee di giunzione degli stampi, od impronte di estrattori, e questo prova una progettazione accurata degli stampi stessi.
Il modello è verniciato in colore nero opaco; il colore è applicato in modo omogeneo, anche se lo strato mi pare sottile, e soggetto a subire facilmente graffi e abrasioni.
Alla bocca dell’outer barrel è applicato il classico tappo rosso, che qui è filettato nella parte sporgente. Come vedremo, è un raccordo per installare l’eventuale silenziatore.

The M9 SOCOM GEAR is is full metal made, apart from grips and some minor components; at the gripping this will be well perceived.
The shape and details reflect those of the true weapon; at first sight, it strikes the integral grip in soft material, very different from the original ones.
The quality of metal casting parts it is good; details are clear, surfaces do not have withdrawns, and the markings are depicted accurately, without using laser. I do not have detected the mold seams, or dampers impression, and this proves an accurate design of the molds themselves.
The model is painted in matt black, the color is applied evenly, although I think in a thin layer, and can easily be subject to scratches and abrasions.
The muzzle it has applied the classic red cap, that here it is threaded on protruding part. As we shall see, it is a silencer adapter.

Passando ad usare metro e bilancia, questi sono i risultati:

Osservando le proporzioni, trovo che l’impugnatura sia più larga dell’originale, forse a causa delle guancette custom di cui questa GBB è stata dotata

Looking at the proportions, I find that the handle is seems wider than the original, perhaps because of its custom grips.

Si tratta, ad ogni modo, di scritte di fantasia, ben diverse da quelle presenti all’arma vera. Anche se realizzate molto bene, a mio modo di vedere sviliscono la qualità estetica della replica.

Those are, however, asample of “creative writing”, very different from those that could be found on the true weapon. Although very well made, in my view those will diminish the aesthetic quality of the model.

 

La M9 originale è dotata di mire fisse, installate sull’arma mediante intagli a coda di rondine; sul mirino e sulla tacca sono presenti tre punti bianchi, per facilitarne l’allineamento.
La replica ha le mire stampate integralmente col carrello, e dotate di un solo punto bianco frontale di riferimento; non è possibile regolarle in alcun modo, ma hanno dimensioni generose, e consentono di acquisire in fretta il bersaglio, con luce buona.

The original M9 it has fixed sights, installed on the weapon by dovetail notches; on the front and rear there are three white dots, for ease of alignment.
The reply sights are integrally moulded on the slide, and have only one front white point of reference, the sights could not be adjusted in any way, but being generously sized, allows a quick acquire of the target, having good light.

 

La M9 originale è dotata di sicura tipo FS, in cui una leva ambidestra posta sul carrello svolge assieme le funzioni di sicurezza manuale e di abbattimento del cane.
Nella replica SOCOM GEAR la leva è presente, ma serve unicamente da sicura, disconnettendo lo scatto.
Il funzionamento è questo:
-    leva ruotata verso l’alto: sicura disinserita e punto rosso visibile
-    leva ruotata verso il basso: sicura inserita e punto rosso nascosto dalla leva stessa.
La leva è ambidestra; l’aletta di destra è fissata mediante una piccola vite a brugola, che nel tempo può allentarsi. Per questo, è opportuno controllarla periodicamente, ed eventualmente fissarla con una goccia di bloccafiletti o di smalto per unghie.

The original M9 it is equipped with the FS sapety type, in which an ambidextrous lever located on the slide operated both as safety feature and as manual decocking.
In SOCOM GEAR reproduction, the lever it is present, but simply a safety, disconnecting the shooting gear.
The operation is this:
- Lever rotated upward: safe off and the red dot visible
- Lever turned down: safety engaged and the red dot hidden by the lever.
The lever is ambidextrous; the right wing is attached with a small allen screw that can loosen over time. Therefore, you should check back periodically, and also you could fix it with a drop of nail paint.

 

Nella M9 l’hold open serve esclusivamente a trattenere il carrello in apertura, esaurite le munizioni. Nella replica come nell’arma vera è azionato sia automaticamente, all’esaurirsi delle munizioni, che manualmente, per ispezionare od intervenire sulla meccanica.
Il suo funzionamento nel mio esemplare è sempre stato regolare, e ben percepibile anche durante il tiro.

In the M9 hold open only serves just to hold the slide open, when the magazine it is emptied.
In this reproduction, as in the real gun, it is operated automatically, at the depletion of ammunition, or manually, to inspect or take action on mechanic parts.
Its work in my model has always been regular, and very noticeable during shooting.

 

La M9 e la sua replica di SOCOM GEAR hanno scatto a singola e doppia azione; questo significa che il grilletto deve compiere un arco di rotazione accentuato, specialmente nel tiro a doppia azione.
Il grilletto ha superfici lisce, e per le dimensioni della replica (almeno per mani di medie dimensioni come la mia) viene impegnato dalla parte anteriore del polpastrello; risulta difficile impugnare correttamente in modalità di doppia azione, ingaggiando il grilletto alla piega fra le prime due falangi.
Il meccanismo di scatto è nella media, forse un po’ raschiante. La corsa del grilletto dopo lo scatto è sufficiente a disturbare il tiro, ed il prevenirla richiede allenamento al fine di padroneggiare il movimento del dito.
 

Il cane della M9 SOCOM GEAR è realizzato in metallo, ed ha forma molto simile all’originale.
Dispone della mezza monta, posizione in cui può essere portato dalla trazione del pollice, od utilizzando la doppia azione del grilletto; tuttavia questa posizione non funziona quale sicurezza aggiuntiva.

The SOCOM GEAR M9 hammer it is made by metal, and shaped much like the original.
Il has the half cocked position, where it can be brought by the thumb pull, or using the double action trigger, but this position does not function as additional safety.

 

Il pulsante di sgancio del caricatore è posto alla base della guardia del grilletto. Realizzato in metallo, ha un rilievo sulla superficie per favorire l’ingaggio del dito. Come nell’arma vera, è possibile farlo sporgere anche dal fianco destro, per tiratori mancini.

The magazine release button is located under the trigger guard. Made of metal, it has an embossed surface to facilitate engagement of the finger. As on the real gun, you can also made it protrude from the frame right side, being a left handed shooter.

 

Una leva posta sul fianco sinistro del fusto serve da fermo di scomposizione, nell’arma vera come nella replica. Ruotata in senso orario permette di separare carrello e castello.
Per impedire che sia azionata accidentalmente, un pulsante di sicurezza posto sul fianco destro del fusto la blocca in chiusura.

A lever on the left side of the frame it operates as disassembly latch, as on the real gun, as on this reply.
Rotating it clockwise allows to separate frame from slide.
To prevent accidental activation, there is also safety button lock closure located on the right side of the frame.

 

La SOCOM GEAR su questa replica ha installato guancette semi integrali, che avvolgono la fronte ed i lati dell’impugnatura. Sono realizzate in materiale gommoso di colore nero, rinforzate da anime in metallo, e dotate di una fine zigrinatura. Sono pure decorate da un medaglioncino in metallo giallo, con lo stemma dell’U.S. Marines Corp.
Questo componente è di pura fantasia, ma di qualità ed efficacia nettamente superiori alle guancette d’ordinanza.

The SOCOM GEAR on this replica it has installed semi integral grips that wraps the front and sides of the grip.
Those are made by a black rubber material, reinforced with metal cores, and finished with a knurled surface.
Also, are decorated with yellow metal medallions, bearing the emblem of the U.S. Marine Corp.
This component is pure fantasy, but for quality and performance it perform well above the issue grips.

 

La campanella è realizzata in metallo, con particolari di dimensioni generose; anche considerando il peso della replica, stimo possa effettivamente svolgere alla sua funzione, evitando magari qualche urto da caduta.

The loop is made of metal, having special large dimensions; even considering the weight of the reply, I think it can effectively play its role, perhaps avoiding some impact derivate from falls.

 

Il caricatore è realizzato per la maggior parte in metallo, con qualche componente in plastica; e fra questi ultimi, purtroppo, sono da elencare le labbra del serbatoio di pallini. Un piccolo urto contro questo particolare può danneggiare irreparabilmente l’intero accessorio.
Per il resto, il caricatore non differisce dagli analoghi componenti di produzione corrente.
Il serbatoio di gas ha la valvola di rifornimento dotata di doppia guarnizione e posta alla base, accessibile tramite un foro nel fondello.
Frontalmente c’è il serbatoio bifilare dei pallini, capace di contenere 26 BB, e dotato di una feritoia destinata sia a controllarne la quantità, sia, grazie ad uno slargo nella sua parte inferiore, al rifornimento.

The magazine it is mostly made by metal, with some plastic component; between them, unfortunately, I have to list the lips of the BB tank. A small impact against this particular can cause irreparable damage to the entire part.
For the remaining, the charger does not differ from similar components of current production.
The gas tank, accessible through a hole in the bottom, it has a filling valve with a double seal.
On the front there is the BB reservoire, capable of holding 26 bullets. In front it has a slot for it to control the remaining quantity, and also, due to a widening in the lower part, for feeding.

 

La scomposizione, illustrata in questa sequenza fotografica, è quella usuale per le repliche di M9 derivate dal modello Tokio Marui.

The take down, shown in this photo sequence, it is the usual common for all replicas derivative of the Tokyo Marui M9 model.

 

Come detto, quello SOCOM GEAR è uno fra i modelli di Beretta 92 “ispirati” meccanicamente da Marui, di cui mi pare costituisca una copia full metal quasi perfetta.
Questo significa sicurezza di funzionamento ed elevata robustezza, ma anche assenza apparente di hop up regolabile.
Dico apparente perché, una volta separate inner ed outer barrel, si scopre sulla sommità del gruppo hop up una piccola vite a grano, che preme su di una sorta di microscopico cuscinetto in plastica. Peccato che di fatto variando l’escursione di questa vite non si produca effetto alcuno sul tiro.
Detto questo, la qualità delle parti è, come ormai tradizione per WE,  che ne l’effettivo produttore, più che buona.

As mentioned, the SOCOM GEAR is one of the Beretta 92 models "inspired" by from Marui, of which it seems to be a full metal almost perfect copy.
This means high operational reliability and robustness, but also apparent absence of adjustable hop up.
I say apparent because, once separated inner and outer barrel, it turns on the top of the hopup housing a small grain, which presses on a sort of microscopic plastic bearing. Too bad that, in fact, by varying the excursion of this screw it does not produce any effect on the shot.
That said, the quality of the parts is, as it has become a tradition for WE, who it is the actual manufacturer, rather than good.

 

Inizio la serie di prove col rifornimento del caricatore.
Mentre il riempimento dei pallini non presenta alcuna difficoltà, specie essendo muniti di uno speed loader e di un briciolo di pazienza (per allineare per bene i BB, occorre inserirli uno alla volta, e non a gruppi), il serbatoio di gas richiede qualche pieno per funzionare correttamente. A mio avviso, le guarnizioni non lubrificate tendono a seccarsi rapidamente; il silicone del GREEN GAS in poco tempo le umetta, e riporta alla giusta morbidezza.
I più esperti possono smontare le valvole, ingrassarne le guarnizioni, e lubrificare con olio i restanti componenti; una operazione, questa, che penso andrebbe periodicamente compiuta su tutti i modelli a gas.
L’autonomia di tiro con un serbatoio di GREEN GAS si aggira sulla cinquantina di BB.

I will start the test series with the magazine filling and feeding.
While the filling of pellets does not present any difficulty, especially being practicised using a speed loader and a bit of patience (to align well to the BB, those have to be entered one at a time, and not in groups), the gas tank requires some time to work properly full. In my opinion, seals, being not lubricated, tend to dry quickly, but the GREEN GAS silicone in a short time soften it, and turn it back to the right softness.
Most experts can remove the valves, grease seals, grease and oil with the remaining components; a task that, I think, should be done periodically on all gas models.
The autonomy of shooting with a fill of GREEN GAS may be around fifty BB.

 

La Beretta 92 / M9 è frutto di accurati studi ergonomici, e tutti i comandi sono disposti in modo tale da essere facilmente raggiungibili ed azionabili. Questo, ovviamente, vale anche per le sue repliche, come questa SOCOM GEAR.
Personalmente, avendo potuto utilizzare la vera Beretta 98, trovo che la sua impugnatura, specie nel tiro rapido mirato, tende a portare verso il basso la linea di tiro; per rimediare, devo allentare la presa delle ultime due dita, riducendo il controllo del rinculo. L’impugnatura a due mani “tira e spingi” mi accentua un poco questa particolarità.
Ebbene, con l’impugnatura SOCOM GEAR tutto questo non accade, e nell’acquisizione del bersaglio le mire mi arrivano agli occhi pressoché allineato.
Di tutti i comandi, quello che non apprezzo è la leva di sicurezza, piuttosto dura da azionare; cercando invano di attivarla col pollice della mano che impugna, mi si arretra il carrello.

The real Beretta 92 / M9 it is the result of careful ergonomic studies, and all controls are arranged so as to be easily accessible and operable. This obviously also applies to its replications, as it is this SOCOM GEAR.
Personally, having been able to use a real Beretta 98, I find that its grip, especially in rapid fire target, tends to bring down the shooting line; in order to remedy, I have to loosen the grip of the last two fingers, reducing the control of the recoil . The grip with both hands "pulls and pushes” it seems to me that accentuates a little this characteristic.
Well, with the SOCOM GEAR grip panels, all this does not happen, and, during target acquisition, the sights it arrives up to the eyes almost aligned.
Of all the commands, the one that I do not appreciate it is the safety lever, that is rather hard to operate.  Trying to activate it with the thumb of gripping hand, I effortlessly will move back the slide.

Una volta caricata e preparata al tiro la replica, provo lo scatto. Come per tutte le armi in doppia azione a grilletto oscillante, la corsa è piuttosto lunga; lo scatto è abbastanza duro, e ben percepibile. Il collasso di retroscatto non è regolabile, ma è di soli due millimetri.

Once loaded and having made ready to shot the M9, I try shooting. As with all weapons having double action, the  trigger it is oscillating, and its run it is quite long; the hammer release it is hard enough, and well felt. The trigger over travel it is not adjustable, but it has a length of just two millimeters.

Durante il tiro, il ciclo di funzionamento è deciso, la sensazione di rinculo buona, lo scarrellamento rapido, l’avviso di arma scarica ben percepibile.

During the shooting, the cycling it is sharp, the recoil good, the blowback rapid, and the hold open, alerting of firearm discharge, very noticeable.

La potenza è notevole, e supera lo joule: questa è la tabella relativa a 10 tiri, effettuati utilizzando pallini da 0,20 ed un cronografo Madbull Mod.1, con temperatura di 23 gradi centigradi

La precisione del tiro è nella norma, a mio avviso accettabile, ma non esaltante; con bersaglio a 4 metri, la caduta dal punto mirato è abbastanza rilevante, e tale rimane anche utilizzando pallini da 0,25.
In una prova col bersaglio a poco più di 10 metri, mi è stato quasi impossibile attingere una sagoma di 15 x 20 centimetri.

The shooting accuracy it is normal, in my opinion acceptable but not exciting; with target at 4 meters, the fall from the aimed point it is quite important, and remains so even using 0.25 BB.
In a test with the target put just over 10 meters, I felt almost impossible to hit a 15 x 20 cm silhouette.

 

La SOCOM GEAR M9 è fornita con una sorta di tappo rosso alla volata della canna. Osservandolo meglio, si nota che in realtà è un connettore metallico filettato con passo 14 antiorario, grazie al quale è possibile installare un silenziatore.
Ho provato questa combinazione; la trovo esteticamente gradevole, dimensionalmente ingombrante, funzionalmente quasi inapprezzabile nell’efficacia. Il tormento dei tiri tende a svitare le componenti, che è bene fissare con un o ring, assicurando le parti del silenziatore con del nastro adesivo.

The SOCOM GEAR M9 comes with a sort of red cap at the muzzle. Better looking, it couil be seen that in reality it is an adapter with counterclockwise threaded 14 mm head, whereby you can install a silencer.
I tried this combination. I find it aesthetically pleasing, bulky, functionally of scarce effectiveness. The shooting tends to loosen the components, and it is a good idea to add an o-ring, and ensure the silencer parts with adhesive tape.

 

Tirando le somme, la replica di M9 della SOCOM GEAR posso paragonarla ad una onesta utilitaria.
Ho la sensazione che, pure subendo una buona dose di maltrattamenti, e soltanto lubrificandola ogni tanto, si rivelerà indistruttibile, pronta a svuotare senza difficoltà il caricatore, adatta a “pulire” una killing house, od a rintuzzare un attacco ravvicinato quando la replica principale si guasta. Una vera backup, insomma, peraltro impegnata a confrontarsi con alcune concorrenti temibili per qualità o prezzo.
Alcune libertà riproduttive mi impediscono di definirla una replica da collezione, mentre certamente è divertente nel tiro al barattolo, grazie al bel realismo di funzionamento.

Summing up, I can compare the M9 SOCOM GEAR replica as an honest car.
I feel that, even undergoing a good deal of ill-treatment, and only occasionally lubricating them, it will prove to be indestructible, ready to easily empty the magazine, suitable for "clean" a killing house, or to repel a closer attack when the primary replica fails. A real backup, however, pledged to confront itself with some formidable competitors for quality or price.
Some reproductive freedoms made impossible to me to define it a collectible replica, while certainly it may be fun for plinking, due to the good functioning realism.
