L'ARMA VERA

Per parlare del Winchester 1873, e della sua riproduzione ASG prodotta dalla coreana KTW Dongsan, la cosa migliore è quella di partire dal’immaginario filmico, perché è nelle pellicole che i lever action prodotti dalla Winchester hanno avuto consacrazione definitiva nell’immaginario collettivo, legandosi a quella che un tempo era definita l’epopea del West.
La citazione deve comprendere soprattutto un titolo: Winchester ‘73, film realizzato nel 1950 dal regista Anthony Mann, e che ha come protagonisti principali James Stewart e, appunto, un model 1873 “one of one thousand” carbine.
Tornando nella storia, l’apparire, a metà del IX secolo, delle munizioni a cartuccia metallica permise il nascere di numerose armi a tiro a rapido affidabili ed efficienti.
In Europa, la strada percorsa fu quella dell’otturatore girevole scorrevole, mentre negli Stati Uniti inizialmente prevalsero le armi a leva, in cui la manovra di espulsione, caricamento ed armamento era compiuta ruotando la guardia del grilletto, appositamente prolungata.
Nel 1860 iniziò la produzione dello Spencer, fucile a ripetizione con serbatoio tubolare da 7 colpi posto nel calcio; questa prima arma apparve in discreto numero delle fila dei soldati unionisti durante la guerra di secessione. Al termine del conflitto apparve anche l’Henry, con serbatoio tubolare posto sotto la canna.
Quest'ultimo, anche se fra i confederati era definito come “quel maledetto fucile yankee che si carica la domenica e spara tutta la settimana”, non si rivelò particolarmente riuscito, e così i suoi diritti di produzione e di sviluppo furono acquistati da un industriale, Oliver Winchester. Questi si avvalse di alcuni esperti, che modificarono profondamente l’Henry, ottenendone uno strumento affidabile.
Nel 1866 apparve il primo fucile lever action col marchio Winchester, che si guadagnò il soprannome di Yellow Boy, ragazzo biondo, per avere il castello di ottone.
Il suo punto di forza era la capacità di svuotare in pochi secondi il capiente serbatoio, grazie all’azione combinata di grilletto e leva; questo mentre in Europa erano usate armi militari in cui ogni singola cartuccia doveva essere inserita manualmente.
Nel 1873 apparve la seconda generazione di fucili Winchester.
Mantenendo l’aspetto generale del modello 1866, la nuova arma aveva castello in acciaio, dust cover scorrevole ad apertura automatica per lo sportello di espulsione, sicura a pressione, e soprattutto era camerata per le nuove munizioni ad innesco centrale, più affidabili. Per quelle stesse munizioni in calibro 44/40 giunse sul mercato il revolver Single Action Army prodotto dalla Colt, e questo diede origine ad un binomio destinato ad avere un ruolo di rilievo nella storia e nella leggenda della frontiera americana.
Il Winchester 1873 fu prodotto sino al 1923 in tre modelli di base:
carbine, con canna tonda da 24 pollici (60,96 cm), e serbatoio da 7 colpi
rifle, con canna tonda od ottagonale da 30 pollici (76,2 cm.) e serbatoio da 15 colpi
musket, per uso militare, con canna tonda da 30 pollici, astina prolungata e magliette per la cinghia di trasporto, e serbatoio da 15 colpi.
Al totale di oltre 700.000 esemplari realizzati sino al 1923, vanno aggiunte le numerose riproduzioni che ancora oggi sono fabbricate, e per tutte ricordo quelle molto belle della casa d'armi italiana Uberti.

THE REAL GUN

To talk about the Winchester 1873, and its ASG reproduction produced by Korean KTW Dongsan, the best thing is to start from the movie imaginary, because it is in the films that the lever action produced by Winchester had definitely established in the collective, binding to what was once called the epic of the West.
The summons must include a title above all: Winchester '73, a film made in 1950 by director Anthony Mann and starring James Stewart and main, in fact, a model 1873 “one of one thousand” carbine.
Going back in history, the appearing in mid-ninth century of the metallic cartridge ammunition allowed the emergence of numerous quick fire weapons reliable and efficient.
In Europe, the path followed was the rotating sliding bolt, while the U.S. initially prevailed lever action weapons, where the movement of expulsion, and loading was accomplished by rotating the trigger guard, especially prolonged.
In 1860 began production of the Spencer repeating rifle with a tubular 7 shots magazine in the stock; this weapon first appeared in a fair number of the ranks of Union soldiers during the Civil War. After the war, it appeared also the Henry rifle, whose magazine it was a tube under the barrel.
The latter, although among the Confederate it was defined as “that damned Yankee rifle you load on Sunday and shoot all week”, not proved particularly successful, and so its production and development rights were purchased by an industrialist, Oliver Winchester. He took advantage of some experts, who radically changed the Henry, obtaining a reliable tool.
In 1866 appeared the first lever action rifle with the Winchester brand, which earned the nickname Yellow Boy, to have the frame made of brass.
The new weapon had the main features of future lever action: knee like locking mechanism, magazine tube below the barrel supplied by a slot on the right side of the castle and closed by a door, wooden forend.
His strong point was the ability to empty in a few seconds, the large magazine, by the combined action of the trigger and lever, while in Europe military weapons were used in which each individual cartridge had to be manually entered.
In 1873 appeared the second generation of Winchester rifles. Maintaining the overall look of the model 1866, the new weapon had the frame of steel, self opening sliding dust cover to protect the ejection port, pressure activated safe, and above all it was chambered for the new centerfire ammunition, more reliable. For those same 44/40 caliber ammunition come on the market the Single Action Army revolver produced by Colt, and this gave rise to a combination destined to have an important role in history and legend of the American frontier
The 1873 Winchester was produced until 1923 in three basic models: carbine, with 24-inch (60.96 cm) round barrel, and 7 rounds magazine,
rifle with round or octagonal 30 inch (76.2 cm. ) barrel and the magazine with 15 rounds
musket, for military use, with 30-inch round barrel, extended forend and sling swivels, and a magazine of 15 shots.
In total more than 700,000 units has been produced up to 1923, and are added to the many reproductions that are still manufactured, and for all I remember those very beautiful made by Italian Uberti guns.

La replica di DONGSAN KTW

Il marchio coreano KTW DONGSAN, pur non particolarmente diffuso, gode di una sua fama per la produzione di repliche a molla dall'elevata qualità estetica e valenza storica dell'originale. ASC ha già presentato una sua replica di pistola ad avancarica ( http://www.airsoftcommunity.it/it/recen ... -flintlock ).
I Winchester lever-action non hanno avuto grande fortuna nel mondo delle airsoftgun: a memoria ricordo lo shotgun modello 1887, con espulsione dei bossoli, prodotto da Tanaka e Marushin, il modello 1892 di Marushin, e dei prodotti cinesi apparsi qualche mese orsono, tutti funzionanti a gas.
KTW dice la sua offrendo il modello 1873 carbine con funzionamento a molla.
La confezione è realizzata interamente in cartone da imballaggio, con interno fustellato, e non presenta eccellenze estetiche: all'esterno alcune scritte ed un disegno illustrano il prodotto contenuto.
Una volta aperta la confezione, oltre alla riproduzione avvolta in un sacco di nylon, vi si trovano il manuale con testi in inglese ed abbondanti illustrazioni, un caricatore di scorta, una chiavetta per regolare l'hop up, un tappo in plastica rossa e morbida da applicare alla bocca della canna, una cartolina per la garanzia ed un paio di bersagli in carta.
Una volta che sia stato estratto dalla protezione, il fucile toglie letteralmente il fiato a chi lo maneggia per la prima volta, tanta è la sensazione di realismo che trasmette.
Calcio ed astina sono in plastica di colore marrone scuro, molto realistica, mentre tutte per altre parti visibili esternamento sono in metallo, ed hanno una finitura che ricorda sia alla vista che al tatto la brunitura di una vera arma. La costruzione è molto solida, senza laschi o torsioni, e (peso a parte) l'impressione di impugnare un vero Winchester è molto forte.
La riproduzione pesa 2.082 grammi, contro i 4.300 dell'arma vera, ed è lunga 935 millimetri.
Anche ad un esame più approfondito, KTW dimostra di aver fatto un gran lavoro di progettazione. Le parti sono ricavate per fusione, ma non si vedono impronte di estrattori o sbavature alla giunzione fra gli stampi. Gli spigoli vivi sono curati come in un vero fucile.

The DONGSAN KTW reproduction

The Korean brand KTW DONGSAN, while not particularly common, has a reputation for its production of spring replicas by the high aesthetic quality and historic value of the original. ASC has already submitted its reply to a muzzle-loading pistol ( http://www.airsoftcommunity.it/it/recen ... -flintlock ).
The Winchester lever-action have not had great luck in the world of airsoftgun: by memory I remember the model 1887 shotgun, with cartridge cases ejection, manufactured by Marushin and Tanaka, the Marushin model of 1892, and some Chinese products that have appeared a few months ago, all running on gas.
KTW says its own, by offering the Model 1873 carbine springer.
The package is made entirely of cardboard, with internal die-cut, and has no aesthetic excellence, bearing outside some writing and a drawing showing the product inside.
Once opened, in addition to the reproduction wrapped in a nylon bag, there are a manual with copious illustrations and texts in English, a spare magazine, a key to adjust the hop up, a red soft plastic cap to be applied to the muzzle, a postcard for the guarantee, and a pair of paper targets.
Once that has been extracted from protection, the gun takes breath away to whoever handles for the first time, such is the feeling of realism that conveys.
Stock and forend are made of dark brown plastic, very realistic, and all other externally visible parts are metal and have a finish that recalls both the browning and the touch of a real weapon. The construction is very solid, with no slack or twists, and (weight aside) the impression to challenge a real Winchester is very strong.
Reproduction weighs 2,082 grams, compared with the 4,300 of real gun, and is 935 mm long.
Even at a more detailed examination, KTW demonstrates that it did a great job of planning. The parts are made by casting, but you can not see ejection rod prints or smudges at the junction between the molds. Sharp edges are treated like a real gun.

Passando ad esaminarne i dettagli, inizio dalla tacca di mira anteriore, che è è stampata integralmente all'outer barrel.
La mira posteriore è un alzo a ritto e cursore, funzionante come l'originale ed a questo abbastanza fedele nelle forme, che una vite fissa all'outer barrel.
Questo componente, verniciato in nero semilucido, è inferiore per qualità di dettaglio e finitura al resto del modello. Avrei oltretutto preferito fosse installato il modello buckhorn, più nello spirito dell'arma vera.
Le scritte sono poche:
sulla coda superiore del castello, la scritta MODEL 1873 - Winchester -
sul calciolo la scritta DONGSAN MODEL ed il logo della ditta
sull'outer barrel, vicino all'alzo, la sigla DSM.
Sotto la canna c'é il serbatoio tubolare chiuso da un tappo metallico, il cui funzionamento spiegherò più avanti.
Canna e serbatoio sono uniti da due fascette metalliche, che trattengono anche l'astina. Per inciso, tutte le viti visibili sono correttamente del tipo a taglio.
Il castello ha due cartelle laterali, che come nell'arma vera possono essere tolte rimuovendo la vite che le trattiene, per accedere al meccanismo interno. Lo sportellino Nelson King è solo simulato.
Sul fondo del castello una finestra quadrata permette di scorgere la parte che simula l'elevatore in ottone del vero Winchester.
Cane, guardia del grilletto e leva guardamano sono robusti e ben riprodotti.
Sul fianco destro del castello, sopra il grilletto, è fissato un anello, il “saddle ring”, che permetteva di fissare l'arma vera ad un gancio della fonda appesa alla sella, o ad una dragona.
Dietro la leva guardamano c'è il pomello della sicura, che, ruotato verso l'avanti, blocca lo scatto ed il grilletto.
Il calcio è formato da due gusci in plastica, di cui si scorge appena la linea di giunzione. Osservandolo a luce radente, si nota qualche ritiro della superficie, dovuto alle sue generose proporzioni. Ho il sospetto che sia possibile sostituirlo con quello originale in legno. La plastica è spessa, e ha nelle parti interne un aspetto fibroso, che mi fa pensare all'impiego di un materiale composito.
Il calciolo è in metallo, fissato da due viti.

The KTW Winchester 1873 in detail

Moving on to examine the details, starting from the front sight blade, which is integrally molded to the outer barrel.
The rear sight it is adjustable by riser and slider, and functional as the original, as pretty faithful to this in the shape. A screw fixed it to the outer barrel.
This component, painted semigloss black, is lower for quality of detail and finish to he rest of the model. Plus, I would have preferred it has been installed the Buckhorn model, closer to the true spirit of the gun.
There are few markings:
on the upper tail of the frame, the word MODEL 1873 - Winchester -
on the butt plate, the written DONGSAN MODEL and the company logo
on the outer barrel, near the rear sight, the acronym DSM.
Under the barrel there is the tubular magazine closed by a metal cap, whose operation I will explain later.
Barrel and magazine tube are connected by two metal bands, which hold the forend also. Incidentally, all visible screws are correctly of the cut type.
The frame has two side plates, that can be removed as on the real gun by unscrewing the screw that holds it, in order to access the internal mechanism. The Nelson King's loading gate is only simulated.
At the bottom of the frame a square window allows you to see the part that simulates the brass carrier block of the true Winchester.
Hammer, trigger guard and hand guard are robust and well reproduced.
On the right side of the frame, above the trigger, is fixed the saddle ring, which was used to fix the real weapon on a hook hanging from the saddle, or a shoulder sling.
Behind the hand guard lever there is the safe knob, which, turned towards the front, operated by blocking the shot and the trigger.
Butt stock is made of two plastic shells, of which you can hardly see the seam. Watching under sidelight, there is some shrinkage of the surface, due to its generous proportions. I suspect that you can replace it with the wooden original. The plastic is thick and show a fibrous appearance in the inner parts, which makes me think the use of a composite material.
The butt plate is made by metal, and attached by two screws.

IN AZIONE

Finito questo esame esterno, megli spendere qualche parola per descrivere il modo in cui la KTW ha voluto rendere il suo Winchester.
Scegliendo un simile soggetto, non basta farne un modello che ne riprenda forme e dettagli; occorre anche, in qualche modo, provare a riprodurre la sensazione che si prova usandolo, tenendo presente che la meccanica di uno springer è molto più lunga di quella di un'arma da fuoco.
Altra cosa: i fucili Winchester sono ancora oggi apprezzati ed utilizzati per la loro straordinaria maneggevolezza ed ergonomia, ed il Model 1873 carbine conferma appieno queste doti, anche nella sua riproduzione airsoft.
Per descrivere questo parto dal caricamento, che nel KTW ricorda sia lo Spencer che il Winchester.
Il KTW viene fornito con due caricatori cilindrici monofilari, ciascuno capace di 30 BB, e che si infilano nel finto serbatoio tubolare sotto la canna.
I caricatori hanno il corpo è in plastica e la testa rotante, che serve anche da fermo, in metallo.
Il rifornimento del caricatore avviene dal foro d'uscita, arretrando l'elevatore e infilandovi un BB alla volta. Utilizzando uno speed loader lo si fa in tempi accettabilmente brevi, a patto di mantenere l'angolo corretto fra l'attrezzo ed il caricatore.
Rifornito il caricatore, lo si infila nel tubo, badando che il foro di alimentazione sia orientato verso l'alto; due sporgenze interne del tubo, su cui scorrono due incavi nei fianchi, lo mantengono nella corretta posizione.
Introdotto completamente il caricatore, si ruota in senso orario la sua estremità metallica sino a che una appendice con si inserisce in un incavo sulla canna. Il tutto è molto più semplice a farsi che a descriversi, e funziona senza problemi.
E adesso è il momento di fare il movimento visto mille volte sul piccolo e grande schermo: afferrare il fucile, infilare le dita nel guardamano, e farlo ruotare verso il basso ed in avanti, per poi riportarlo indietro, pronto allo sparo.
La sorpresa arriva quando si scopre che (esteticamente) tutto funziona come nell'arma vera.
Mentre il guardamano ruota in avanti, l'elevatore in ottone si alza, il dust cover scivola indietro scoprendo la meccanica, ed un'asta metallica fuoriesce da castello, spingendo indietro il cane sino ad armarlo, per poi rientrare col ritorno del guardamano.
Il dust cover, arretrando, incide un poco la superficie del castello; come per l'arma vera, deve essere riportato in avanti manualmente.
Tutto questo avviene accompagnato dal rumore metallico del pistone e del cane che ingaggiano i rispettivi fermi.
Il grilletto è largo e liscio, e il dito ci scivola un poco sopra; lo scatto è abbastanza duro, e netto.
La sensazione al momento del tiro è di una scossa abbastanza forte, diversa dal rinculo. Ho poi capito che a darla sono i due impatti del pistone e del cane.
Questo mi porta a parlare della parte meccanica.
Alla Dongsan hanno messo assieme due distinti congegni, quello coreografico e quello di tiro, del tutto indipendenti fra loro, ma attivati entrambi dalla leva di caricamento ed azionati contemporaneamente dal grilletto.
ATTENZIONE: col pistone arretrato ed il BB inserito, il tentativo di abbattere il cane porta sempre allo sparo.
Il congegno di tiro è formato dal pistone e dalla leva di scatto, che lavorano in corrispondenza dell'astina, e quindi parecchio avanti rispetto al castello, azionati da due prolunghe metalliche.
Levando le due cartelle, è possibile scorgere il meccanismo interno, ed anche procedere alla sua pulizia e lubrificazione.
Lasciando il fucile nella condizione originale, col lubrificante di fabbrica, la rotazione di armamento era decisamente faticosa. Puliti i meccanismi ed applicato del grasso al litio, le cose sono cambiate radicalmente in meglio.
Dalle finestre nel castello si vede fra l'altro che la leva di armamento effettua la trazione del pistone grazie a due uncini molto ben studiati, che permettono di rendere accettabile lo sforzo del caricamento.
Anche all'interno, quasi tutto è in metallo, ed il quasi, purtroppo, si riferisce al pistone di plastica, che a mio avviso è la parte maggiormente esposta a rottura. A quel che ho potuto capire, si tratta di una caratteristica costruttiva voluta dalla normativa coreana.
Sulla potenza erogata dal Winchester KTW avevo letto opinioni diverse, ma tutte relative a prestazioni decisamente modeste.
La prova da me effettuata con cronografo Madbull mod. 1 e BB da 0,20 grammi mi ha dato dei risultati perfettamente compatibili, ad esempio, con quelli di un VSR 10 Marui.

Il funzionamento è sempre stato perfetto: ho constatato che dal caricatore non viene pescato l'ultimo pallino, come pure che questo non crea alcun problema.
Questa riproduzione è dotata di hop up, regolabile mediante una vite a grano nascosta dalla fascetta posteriore. Per effettuarne la regolazione, occorre quindi rimuovere le due viti di fissaggio, far scorrere in avanti la fascetta, e quindi operare sulla vite a grano. Una operazione da fare con calma e con gli strumenti adatti, e che stimo inoltre di dubbia utilità, in quanto non mi è parso che l'hop up portasse a qualche variazione apparente.
E veniamo alle note dolenti.
Il Winchester KTW è preciso, con una rosata di poco superiore al centimetro a 4 metri (il che vuol dire una teorica diecina di centimetri a 20 metri) ma che arriva molto alta rispetto al punto mirato.
Nel bersaglio che accompagna queste righe, la distanza fra centro della rosata e punto mirato è superiore ai cinque centimetri.
La ragione?
A mio avviso, almeno per l'esemplare che ho esaminato, il motivo è l'allineamento fra l'inner barrel ed il corpo della replica, con un angolo troppo accentuato.
Altra cosa migliorabile è il cilindro in plastica. Anche se tutte le parti sono ben dimensionate, ho l'impressione (confermata da quanto ho letto) che la sua durata possa essere limitata.

IN ACTION

Finished this external examination, better say a few words to describe the way in which the KTW wanted to make his Winchester.
By choosing such a subject, it muste be formulated a model that not simply gets its forms and details; it also had, somehow, try to reproduce the feeling you get from using it, keeping in mind that the mechanics of a springer is much longer than that of a firearm.
Another thing to say: Winchester rifles are still used and appreciated for their outstanding handling and ergonomics, and the Model 1873 carbine fully confirms these qualities, even in his airsoft reproduction.
To describe this I will start from loading, which in KTW remember both the Spencer that the Winchester.
The KTW comes with two monofilar cylindrical magazines, each capable of 30 BB, and that fit in the fake magazine tube under the barrel.
Magazines have plastic body and metal rotating head, which also serves as a restraint.
The supply of the magazine must be done from the exit hole, retracting the follower and insert a BB at time. Using a speed loader this is done in acceptably short time, provided you maintain the correct angle between the tool and magazine.
Filled the magazine, slips it into the tube, making sure that the hole is oriented upward. Two notches on the sides that moves up two internal projections of the tube, hold it in place.
Fully introduced the magazine, rotates clockwise its metal end until an appendix it is inserted in a groove on the barrel. Everything is much easier to do than to describe, and it works without problems.
And now is the time to do the movement seen a thousand times on the small and big screen: grab the gun, put your fingers in the trigger guard, and swing it down and forward, then bring it back, ready to fire.
The surprise comes when you find that (aesthetically) everything works like the real gun.
While the handguard rotates forward, the brass block rises, the dust cover slides back revealing the mechanical, and a metal rod comes out of the frame, pushing back the hammer up to cock it, and then return with the coming back of the handguard.
The dust cover, retreating, affects a little the frame surface; like on real weapon, it must be brought forward manually.
All this is accompanied by the sound of the piston and hammer that engage the respective stops.
The trigger is wide and smooth, and the finger slips slightly above, the shot is hard enough, and clear.
The feeling at the time of the shooting is a shock strong enough, other than recoil. I then realized that to take it are the two impacts of the piston and the hammer.
This brings me to the mechanics.
At Dongsan they put together two separate devices, for choreography and for shooting, completely independent of each other, but both activated by the loading lever and simultaneously operated by the trigger.
The choreographic device, which I just described in the action, is what moves elevator, dust cover and hammer. The hammer can be cocked manually, and pressing the trigger strikes, without it having other effects.
WARNING: with the piston backed and the BB entered, the attempt to uncock the hammer always leads to the shot.
The firing device consists of the piston and the sear, which work at the foreend, and then a lot ahead of the frame, run by two metal extensions.
Raising the two side plates, you can see the internal mechanism, and also proceed to clean and lubricate it.
Leaving the gun in the original condition, with factory grease, the handguard rotation was quite tiring. Cleaned the mechanisms and after an application of lithium grease, things have changed radically for the better.
From the windows in the frame you see, inter alia, that the cocking handle makes pulling the piston with two hooks very well studied, which allow you to make acceptable the effort of loading.
Even inside, almost everything is made of metal, and almost, unfortunately, relates to the plastic piston, which I think is the part most exposed to failure. Then I could understand, this is a design feature desired by the Korean regulations.
About the power supplied by KTW Winchester, I had read different opinions, but all related to very low performance.
The test I performed with Madbull model 1 chronograph. and 0.20 g BB gave me results that are perfectly compatible, for example, with those from a Marui VSR 10.

The operation has always been perfect: I noticed that from the magazine is not caught the last BB, and that this poses no problem.
This replica features an adjustable hop up, via a screw hidden by the foreend band. To make the adjustment, it must then remove the two screws, slide out the band, and then operate on the screw. An operation to be done quietly and with the right tools, and also one that I estimates of dubious value, since it seemed to me that the hop up would not lead to some variation apparent.
And now we come to the painful notes.
The KTW Winchester is sharp, with an hit area just over one centimeter at four meters (which means a theoretical ten centimeters to twenty meters) but that comes very high in relation to point of aim.
On the target that accompanies these lines, the distance between the point of aim and point of impact is greater than five centimeters.
The reason? In my opinion, at least for the sample that I examined, the reason is the alignment between the inner barrel and the body of the reproduction, forming a too pronounced corner.
