Personalmente mi sono sempre interessati i pezzi di equipaggiamento storici o inconsueti, specialmente quelli realizzati durante i conflitti, direttamente dal personale impegnato.
Si possono chiamare "Custom" o "DiyGear" (Do-It-Yourself, faidatè...), ma è materiale pensato e realizzato secondo necessità, spesso in condizioni avverse, e non sulla base di studi teorici che spesso hanno portato ad equipaggiamenti scadenti o poco performanti.

Quello che presento qui sotto non pretende di essere nulla di elaborato, semplicemente un esercizio ed una sorta di tributo a due periodi a cui sono particolarmente legato: la guerra in vietnam e la Repubblica Democratica Tedesca, la DDR.

Personally I have always been interested in the historical or unusual pieces of equipment, especially those made during the conflict, directly from the fighters involved.
Can be called "Custom gear" or "DiyGear (Do-It-Yourself), but it is material designed and built as needed, often in adverse conditions, and not on the basis of theoretical studies that often led to equipment of poor quality or low performance.

What I present below does not pretend to be anything elaborate, simply an exercise and a sort of tribute to two periods I like: the Vietnam's Conflict and the German Democratic Republic or GDR.

Questo chest prende spunto dal famoso pettorale "CHICOM", gibernaggio molto utilizzato da forze più o meno regolari in diversi angoli della Terra: dal Vietnam all'Angola, passando per l'Afghanistan.
E' un sistema oltremodo grezzo, creato per trasportare il minimo indispensabile: 3/4 serbatoi per Kalashnikov (anche se esistono versioni da 6), 3 granate ed il kit di pulizia per l'arma in dotazione (una boccetta d'olio e qualche straccio, come se fosse necessario...).
Le tasche si chiudono utilizzando un bottone in legno e la chiusura posteriore non è altro che un semplice nodo.
Un tattico assolutamente rozzo e poco curato, sicuramente, ma è in circolazione da più di 40 anni ed è sicuramente di provata efficacia.

This chest is inspired by the in-famous chest rig called "CHICOM", widely used by forces more or less regular in different corners of the earth: from Vietnam to Angola, through the Afghanistan.
It 'a very crude system, designed to carry the bare minimum: 3 / 4 Kalashnikov magazine (although there are versions of 6), 3 grenades and weapon cleaning kit included (one bottle of oil and some rag, as if it were necessary ...).
The pockets are closed by using a wooden button closure and back is nothing but a simple knot.
A tactical system absolutely rude and not very nice, certainly, but has been around for more than 40 years and is definitely combat proven.

Tornando all'oggetto della recensione, come tessuto ho utilizzato una vecchia casacca in mimetismo Strichtarn, utilizzato dalla NVA (Nationale Volksarmee - Esercito Nazionale del Popolo), che quindi ho dovuto "smontare" pezzo per pezzo.
Vi assicuro che non è semplice come sembra...
Da questa ho recuperato anche un paio di bottoni, orrendamente kitch, ma "non è bello ciò che è bello"...

Returning to the subject of the review, as fabric I used an old jacket in camouflage Strichtarn, used by the NVA (Nationale Volksarmee - People's National Army), then I had to deconstruct it piece by piece.
I assure you that is not as simple as it seems ...
From this I recovered a couple of buttons, horribly kitsch, but "it is beautiful what is beautiful" ...

Una volta recuperato il tessuto per la base e le tasche, ho tolto da un vecchio zaino italiano (penso degli anni '60) gli spallacci, un paio di fettucce e le minuterie in metallo.

Il disegno del tattico e delle tasche l'ho realizzato prima in carta velina, per provare se le misure (copiate dal chicom, per risparmiare un pò di tempo...) fossero valide anche cambiando la densità del tessuto.
Una volta fatto, ho ritagliato le parti che mi servivano e le ho cucite utilizzando comune filo di cotone, di vecchio tipo, un pò più spesso e sicuramente meno anacronistico del filo di nylon che si utilizza per i tattici moderni.
Fissate le tasche, ho optato per una chiusura tramite automatico in metallo, più veloce da utilizzare del bottone in legno.

Once recovered the fabric for the base and pouches, I removed from an old Italian backpack (I think it comes from the 60s) the shoulder straps and a pair of details.

Then I made the model of the vest and pocket in tissue paper, to test whether the measures (copied from chicom to save some time ...) were valid also changing the density of the fabric.
Once done, I cut the parts I needed and I sew using common thread of cotton, old-fashioned, a little more sturdy, and certainly less anachronistic of nylon thread that is used for modern tactical vest.
Secure the pockets, I opted for a clousure by automatic metal button.

A fianco dei portagranate/utility ho realizzato due spazi per agganciare tasche con sistema ALICE. Internamente si trova del materiale plastico di rinforzo, per evitare che l'aggancio ceda con l'uso.

 

Alongside the grenade pouch/utilities, I have created two spaces for hanging pockets with ALICE system. Inside I put a slim plastic plate as a reinforcement to prevent the hook disposes with use.

Praticamente il tattico è terminato. Realizzo solo alla fine che le minuterie in metallo sono di una scomodità impressionante, colpa delle mollezze moderne in cordura, ed andando completamente fuori dal "recinto storico" che mi ero costruito, monto minuterie ITW NEXUS in coyote. Poco male, almeno il colore si intona.

 

Now the chest is virtually ended. Now I realize that the metal details are very unconfortable, blame to the softness and modern Cordura and, going completely out of the "historic fence" that I had constructed, I put in some ITW NEXUS coyotes details. Never mind, at least the color blends.

L'intera opera mi è costata in termini di tempo una decina di ore, contando anche che ho dovuto fare a pezzi un giaccone DDR, che ha preso almeno la metà di queste ore di lavoro.
In termini monetari siamo sui 40€, ma con un pò di fortuna e l'aiuto di Ebay, il prezzo finale può essere abbassato ulteriormente.
Il tipo di tessuto è adatto ad essere cucito con qualsiasi tipo di macchina casalinga, mentre la cordura moderna può essere cucita solo attraverso attrezzature più professionali.

The entire project cost me about ten hours, counting that I had to rip a DDR jacket, which took at least half of these hours.
In monetary terms we are about € 40, but with a little luck and the help of Ebay, the final price can be lowered further.
The type of fabric is suitable for any type of sewing machine, while the modern Cordura can be sewn only by the most professional equipment.
