 Henry Deringer (1786 - 1868) fu un armaiolo statunitense, attivo in Pennsylvania. Figlio d’arte, guadagno la sua fama nella prima metà del XIX secolo grazie alla produzione di pistole ad avancarica con meccanismo a pietra focaia, e successivamente a luminello, dalle dimensioni particolarmente ridotte.
La più nota fra queste armi fu impiegata dall’attore John Wilkes Booth il 15 aprile 1865, per compiere l’attentato mortale al presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America Abraham Lincoln, Le armi di Deringer stabilirono quasi sino dal loro apparire una nuova tipologia nel campo delle pistole, le palm pistol (pistole da palmo) ed il termine Derringer (con due erre,per ragioni di uso del marchio originale) passò nel mondo dell’oplologia ad indicare una classe di armi estremamente compatte.

L’avvento della cartuccia metallica portò allo sviluppo di nuovi modelli, ancora oggi apprezzati da chi ha vuole una pistola estremamente compatta e sufficientemente potente.
Se ne conoscono versioni ad una, due o quattro canne, e la loro caratteristica comune, oltre alle ridotte dimensioni, ed a differenza dei revolver o delle similari e contemporanee pepperbox, è che ruota il percussore, colpendo in successione i proiettili, mentre rimane invariata la posizione del blocco di canne rispetto al fusto.

 L’arma vera a cui si ispira la riproduzione di Marushin è la Remington Derringer, prodotta fra il 1866 ed il 1935 in tre modelli principali, ed ancora oggi offerta da altri produttori. La pistola era offerta in più calibri, il più comune dei quali fu il .41 rimfire. Dotata di due canne sovrapposte, che per il caricamento ruotavano in alto ed all’indietro (flip up), aveva pure un dispositivo di sicura, e funzionava con un meccanismo a singola azione che sparava un colpo alla volta. La Derringer 1866 è certamente una fra le più longeve pistole ancora oggi impiegate per difesa.

 La casa giapponese Marushin sembra avere una particolare predilezione per la piccola Derringer, tanto da averla più volte riprodotta in modelli caratterizzati da notevoli differenze tecniche, ed adatti per i BB da 6 o da 8 mm, ed affiancandone la moderna variante COP, a quattro canne..
Quello qui illustrato è il modello a due colpi per BB da 6 mm, con meccanismo a singola azione e funzionamento a gas.
La confezione è realizzata interamente in cartone fustellato, ed è molto robusta. Allo scopo di proteggere ulteriormente il modello, lo si è anche avvolto in un foglio di plastica a bolle.
La box art è basata su una foto del modello, stranamente senza aggiungere richiami di carattere western.
Gli accessori si limitano ad un manuale e ad un sacchettino di pallini. Il manuale è di sole quattro facciate, scritte in inglese ed illustrate da foto a colori, con le semplicissime indicazioni e precauzioni d’uso.

The box art is based on a photo of the model, strangely without adding recalls having some western character.
Accessories are limited to a manual and a bag of pellets. The manual is only four pages, written in English and illustrated with color photos, with the simple use directions and precautions.

 

 La replica è realizzata nelle sue parti principali in ABS, con minuterie in metallo, e rappresenta un modello con finitura cromata, eseguita in modo esemplare. 
L'alta qualità della cromatura è tale da aver creato dei problemi dovuti ai riflessi, durante la ripresa delle immagini che accompagnano queste righe, e me ne scuso.
Le parti sono stampare con precisione, con qualche segno visibile di estrattore e di giunzione fra gli stampi. 
La Derringer è proprio piccola, anche se la sagoma la fa apparire un poco più minacciosa rispetto ad una pocket pistol automatica. La compongono due parti principali, il fusto ed il blocco con le due canne, incernierate superiormente fra di loro.
L’assemblaggio è pari alla fama della Marushin, e quindi buono, e senza apparenti scricchiolii o laschi fra le parti.

The plating high quality is such that it created problems due to the reflections, while shooting the images that accompany these lines, and I apologize about this.
The parts are printed with precision, awith few visible signs of the junction between the dies, and extractor rods.
The Derringer is really small, even if the shape makes it look a little more threatening than a pocket automatic pistol. The assembling of the two main parts, the frame and the barrel block with the two rods are hinged at the top between them.
The assembly is equal to the reputation of the Marushin, so good, and no apparent squeaks or loose between the parties.

 Le mire sono fisse, ed integrali al fusto ed alla canna; la loro dimensione è notevole, rispetto a quella generale della piccole pistole, e consente di mirare per davvero. Un grosso vantaggio, se avete mai provato a farlo, ad esempio, con una Baby Browning, sia vera che ASG.
Le guancette sono in metallo di colore nero, e simulano la guttaperca o la bachelite usate nell’arma vera. 
La guancetta sinistra serve anche da supporto al minuscolo serbatoio del gas.
Facile intuire che questo materiale è stato scelto allo scopo di giustificare la sigla HW (heavy weight, peso elevato). Devo dire che impugnando questa Derringer non ho avuto la classica sensazione di guscio vuoto e fragile, a tutto vantaggio del realismo.
Il grilletto è privo di guardia, e trova spazio in una feritoia entro ad un apposito sperone, da cui sporge di 3 millimetri. Si tratta di una soluzione tecnica in voga a cavallo fra il XIX ed il XX secolo per favorire il porto nelle tasche od a contatto con gli indumenti senza rischiare impigliamenti, ed ancora impiegata qualche volta nelle armi moderne.

 The sights are fixed, and integral to the frame and barrel, and their size it is remarkable, compared to the overall small guns, and allows you to aim for real. A big advantage if you ever tried to do so, for example, using a Baby Browning, real or ASG.
The grips are made by black metal, and simulate the gutta-percha or bakelite used for the real gun.
The left grip also serves as a support to the tiny gas tank.

The trigger has no guard, and is housed in a slot within a specific outcrop, from which it protrudes 3 mm.  Entrando nel dettaglio, stupisce che l’apparente semplicità della Derringer contrasti col numero di comandi visibili. 
Oltre al cane ed al grilletto, la pistola ha una leva di sicurezza sul fianco destro ed un cursore per lo sblocco delle canne su quello sinistro, che in questa replica ha scopi solamente estetici.
Il funzionamento è molto semplice, e si incentra sulla leva di sicura.
Ruotandola all’indietro, le si fanno impegnare due tacche sul fusto.
La superiore rende l’arma pronta al tiro, e l’inferiore la pone in condizioni di sicurezza, bloccando lo scatto.
Ruotando completamente la leva verso l’avanti, si consente al blocco delle due canne di essere ruotato verso l’alto ed all’indietro, per caricarle con un BB ciascuna.
Fatto questo, e dopo aver portato all’indietro la leva di sicura, la Derringer è pronta all’uso.
Il rifornimento di gas avviene con un po’ di difficoltà, almeno nell’esemplare del tutto nuovo che sto esaminando, anche per la valvola a doppia guarnizione installata. 
Il piccolo serbatoio non mi dà l’impressione di una grande autonomia, ed in effetti si esaurisce in fretta, dopo quattro o cinque BB.

L’armamento del cane risulta invece un poco più ostico, per l’angolo sfavorevole che forma col pollice.
Lo scatto non è certo pensato per la precisione; nonostante la singola azione, il grilletto richiede un certo sforzo, anche se la corsa è brevissima.
Le mire, come ho detto, mi sono parse sorprendetemente buone, e contribuiscono ad una insospettabile precisione, con rosate di qualche centimetro ai miei consueti quattro metri.
La potenza è anch’essa ridotta.

 Tirando le somme, la Derringer di Marushin è prima di tutto in oggetto da collezione. Piccola, economica, affascinante e ben lavorata, offre la riproduzione di un oggetto che è stato ed è simbolo di un’epoca, senza aver mai perso la sua attualità. Personalmente, la Marushin con questo suo prodotto mi ha incantato.
A parte l’esporla orgogliosamente in collezione, che cosa se ne può fare?
Può essere divertente eseguirvi il close range plinking, ed ogni due tiri celebrare la realistica cerimonia del caricamento, alla faccia dei mega caricatori da migliaia di BB oggi in uso.
Sul campo di gioco airsoft il suo impiego resta simile a quello dell’arma vera: uno strumento da usare quale ultimissima risorsa, a brevissima distanza. 
Direi che è il backup del backup, visto che la si può infilare in qualsiasi tasca.
Se poi a qualcuno venisse l’idea di un airsoft game a tema western in costume, più per il gusto di giocare che per quello di competere, anche la piccola Marushin potrebbe dire la sua, magari apparendo dalla manica di qualche gambler azzimato, o (per me, preferibilmente) sfilata con gesto seducente e letale da una giarrettiera, dove riposava appoggiata al velluto di una gamba ben tornita. 

 Summing up, the Marushin Derringer over all it a collector's item. Small, economical, attractive and well-crafted, offers playback of an object that has been and still it is symbol of an era, having never lost its relevance. Personally, this Marushin product enchanted me.Apart from exposing it proudly in the collection, what could be done of it? It can be fun to run a close range plinking, and every two shots celebrate the realistic loading, despite of the thousands BB mega packs magazines in use today.In airsoft game field, its use is similar to the one of the true weapon: an instrument to be used as a very last resort, a short distance.I would say that it is backing up the backup, since you can fit it into any pocket.And if someone would come to the idea of a western-themed airsoft game in costume, more for the pleasure of playing than to compete, even the small Marushin could tell her word, perhaps appearing from the sleeve of some dapper gambler, or ( for me, preferably) showed lethal from a garter with a seductive gesture, where it was resting, leaning against the velvet of a well-turned leg.
